ENCATC is the leading European network on Cultural Management and Cultural Policy Education. It is an independent membership organisation gathering over 100 higher education institutions and cultural organisations in over 40 countries. ENCATC was founded in 1992 to represent, advocate and promote cultural management and cultural policy education, professionalise the cultural sector to make it sustainable, and to create a platform of discussion and exchange at the European and international level. Issue N° 5/2014 >praxis | for students ENCATC > PROMOTING STUDENT MOBILITY PRAXIS is an information service for ENCATC members ONLY. The economic crisis has been a wake-up call, forcing us to focus on issues that really matter. Education is one of these fundamental issues, as it provides the key to build and sustain our future. This Eurydice report, focusing on access to higher education, flexible pathways, student retention, and the transfer to employment, will to help us understand what we have been able to achieve, and what still needs to be done within Higher Education. At the European Commission we have been consistent and resolute in our advice to Member States that we need to continue to invest in our higher education systems. There is no doubt that higher education systems are changing opening up to more students, and responding to increasing demands from society. Clearly public authorities and particularly higher education institutions are doing a great deal to ensure success in widening participation, supporting students and educating them for the complex demands of a fast-evolving labour market, and there are many examples of good policy and good practice in the report. But more needs to be done. Across Europe, we are becoming increasingly conscious that not only do we have to invest more in higher education, but we also have to invest more wisely. It is not enough to encourage young people into higher education. We also have to help them succeed in their study programmes as this is vital for jobs and economic growth, as well as or their self-esteem. More can be done to ensure that students receive good academic guidance before they enter higher education, that they are properly supported while in higher education and that they know about employment opportunities when graduating. Like all Eurydice publications, this report draws on authoritative information from each country. It provides a clear, comparative view of national policies and actions to support students entering higher education, during their studies and when moving on to the labour market. It also contains interesting examples of institutional practice in different parts of Europe, illustrating how higher education institutions are implementing national policy objectives. The more we study and reflect on practices developed across Europe, the more we learn from each other and the more we advance in modernizing our higher education systems. ENCATC is the leading European network on Cultural Management and Cultural Policy Education. It is an independent membersh ip o rgan isa t i on gathering over 100 higher education institutions and cultural organisations in over 40 countries. ENCATC was founded in 1992 to represent, advocate a n d p r o m o t e c u l t u r a l management and cultural policy education, professionalise the cultural sector to make it sustainable, and to create a platform of discussion and exchange at the European and international level.

Issue N° 5/2014

>praxis | for students

ENCATC > PROMOTING STUDENT MOBILITY PRAXIS is an information service for ENCATC members ONLY.

There is no doubt that higher education systems are changing – opening up to more students, and responding to increasing demands from society.

Like all Eurydice publications, this report draws on authoritative information from each

country.

This report will help us to better understand better the different policies and actions that are being implemented in Europe, and that we are able to make the right choices to build a better future.

BUILDING CAPACITY OPPORTUNITIES

Continue learning with a free world-class education for

anyone anywhere

The Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. It is a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for anyone anywhere. All of the site's resources are available to anyone.

“In a system like [Khan Academy], the student is in charge; they say, “This is my goal,” and they use their resources to achieve it. The teacher is one of those resources. It’s no longer an antagonistic relationship. By letting them take ownership of their learning, now they’re learning one of the most important skills in life,” said Khan Academy founder, Salman Khan during an interview with the Vegas Seven.

For students of arts management there is a section on the Khan Academy website dedicated to art history. It encourages spontaneous conversations about works of art where the speakers are not afraid to disagree with each other or art history orthodoxy. Videos are made by Dr. Beth Harris and Dr. Steven Zucker along with other contributors and maintained at http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/.

Partner content is also contributed by the Museum of Modern Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Asian Art Museum among others.

Museum Thyssen-Bornemiza in Madrid Deadline: Not stated

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum offers visitors an overview of art from the 13th century to the late 20th century. In the nearly one thousand works on display, visitors can contemplate the major periods and pictorial schools of western art such as the Renaissance, Mannerism, the Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism and the art of the 19th and 20th centuries up to Pop Art. The museum also features works from some movements not represented in state-owned collections, such as Impressionism, Fauvism, German Expressionism and the experimental avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. In addition, it boasts an important collection of 19th-century American painting not found in any other European museum institutions.

Aside from its panoramic perspective, the collection housed in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum also offers us a glimpse of the tastes and preferences of the two persons principally responsible for its existence, Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza (1875-1947) and Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza (1921-2002). Well versed in the Central European artistic tradition, both men showed a particular predilection for portraits and landscapes. This is evident in the works of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, in contrast with the predominance of

religious and historical paintings found in other Spanish museums. In 2004, the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection was brought to the Museum, adding over two hundred works that round out the representation of styles and genres already present in the Permanent Collection.
