Anchor

Because in ancient times an anchor represented safety, early Christians

adopted it as a symbol of their hope in Christ. "We have this hope as an an-

chor for the soul, firm and secure" (Hebrews 6:19, NIV). Word play may have

been involved: ankura, Greek for "anchor," sounds similar to en kurio, or "in

the Lord." As Latin became Christians' primary language, however, the "anchor

-Lord" connection would have faded.

Ash Wednesday Service

On Ash Wednesday, February 10th at 7:00 PM we will join together for a

traditional service with the imposition of ashes.

Prayer Warriors Women’s Book Study

Do you believe in prayer? Why not

join the Prayer Warriors on

Wednesday morning at 8 AM in the

Chapel? Where two or three are

there am I in the midst of them.

Matt 18:20

What Does God Really Think About Women? If you’d like to find out join us at our Book Study

Monday mornings at 10:00 AM in the Conference

Room. Did you know the first disciple Jesus had was

a woman!?

Are you a woman who enjoys fellowshipping with other Christian women? join us the first

Monday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall for Martha Circle. A time to gather

together for devotions, fellowship and of course a snack or two.

Martha Circle will hold it’s February meeting in the Fellowship Hall on February 1st a 7:00

PM. Sherry White will have the devotions and Shirley Rainey will give the program.

Hostesses will be Dala Lawrence and Sharon King. Everyone is to bring 3 Valentines which

we will sign and send to those of our church who cannot get out or are not able to very

often. Every woman of the church is invited to join us at any time. We would be glad to

fellowship and enjoy the evening with you.

GriefShare

GriefShare meets every Wednesday at 10:00 AM in the Conference Room. You can join in

at any point of the program. We would love to have you join us if you’ve lost a loved one

and would like a place to find healing.

The church is not the building — the church is the people. Do you have ideas? Why not

share them? Dala Lawrence as Lay Leader is your voice. Let her know your wishes, your

concerns or your needs as a congregation. Let’s come alive as a congregation.

Martha Circle

On the first day of Lent, pastors in many churches dip a finger in ashes (often made by burn-

ing palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday) and make a cross on parishioners’

foreheads.

God’s people have used ashes as a sign of mourning, humiliation and penitence. In the Old

Testament, ashes were used as a purification offering. The New Testament speaks of re-

penting in “sackcloth and ashes” (Luke 10:13, NRSV).

On Ash Wednesday, Christians are pained because our sins — private and public — led to

Jesus’ death. With repentant hearts, we begin the season of Lent, knowing it leads to resur-

rection on Easter Sunday.

Seder Meal on Holy Thursday, March 24 Time to be Decided

What in the world is a Seder Meal? I will tell you. A Seder meal is what the Jews celebrate

at Passover. It is also the “Last Supper”, Jesus had with the twelve. It recalls the years of

abuse, hunger, and hard living for the people called Israel (Jews). It is a very strong

reminder even for us.

We will not do a “Seder Meal”, but what is called the Messianic Seder Meal. In other

words, we bring Jesus into our part of this Seder.

Come join us on March 24th for our Messianic Seder, and celebrate together our own

struggles as Christians. Please let Pastor Keith or Edith Huene know if you are interested.

Thank You

I want to say a big thank you to all the members of our church that went caroling at

Christmas. Pastor Keith, Joanne, Sherry White, Mary Frerker, Sharon King, Ann Edwards,

Stephanie Williams, Kathleen Guthrie and myself enjoyed singing and spreading cheer to

others. We started at the Villa Catherine assisted and supportive living areas and in the

main home to residents on first floor and south wing. We also visited Jule Wildi, Mike

Rainey, Mary Beth Wilton, Bill and Lelah Siever, Richard & Beryl Durbin, Opal Hempen, and

Sonny & Elsie Seger. Went to Ruby Jones but she was not at home. They were all surprised

and very touched and grateful that we would remember them in this way. Again thank you

each and every one for blessing others with your gifts of voice and presence. Edie Huene.

Apportionment Questions Submitted to be Addressed

On Sunday February 7th Rev. Rick VanGiesen will join us for our morning worship service.

After worship we will meet in the Fellowship Hall for a time to have the questions and

concerns that you turned in regarding the apportionments will be answered. Light

refreshments will be served.

Rev. Van Giesen serves as the Director of Administrative Services, Conference Treasurer,

and Benefits officer for the Illinois Great Rivers Conference.

Dinner and a Movie — “War Room”

Join us on February 28th! The Mission Committee is sponsoring a dinner with chili, hot

dogs and all the fixins. A love offering will be taken for our Missions. After dinner we will

show the movie “War Room”.

Filled with heart, humor, and wit, WAR ROOM follows Tony and Elizabeth Jordan, a

couple who seemingly have it all-great jobs, a beautiful daughter, their dream home. But

appearances can be deceiving. In reality, their marriage has become a war zone and their

daughter is collateral damage. With guidance from Miss Clara, an older, wiser woman,

Elizabeth discovers she can start fighting for her family instead of against them. As the

power of prayer and Elizabeth's newly energized faith transform her life, will Tony join the

fight and become the man he knows he needs to be? Together, their real enemy doesn't

have a prayer. Written by AFFIRM/Provident

Bible Study — “War Room”

Pastor Keith will be leading a study on War Room. This study will be on Sunday evenings, from 5—

6:30 pm. Starting March 6th. Join us on February 28th after church to view the movie and we will

start the Bible study the following week

Operation Christmas Child

Matthew 25 Food Pantry

Thank you for

participating in the

Shoebox ministry.

Thanks to your

contributions, children

in Ghana and Paraguay

will receive the

Christian love you

shared with them this

Christmas.

Thank you for blessing children in need through Operation Christmas Child and for donating online to discover

the destination of your shoebox gift.

Your shoeboxes have begun their journey and will be delivered to children in Ghana and Paraguay. The gift-filled boxes you packed will share the love of God in a tangible way and can impact not only the boy or girl who

received them, but also their families and communities.

You can learn more about how Operation Christmas Child is working in Ghana and Paraguay, and then share it with your friends via social media. Most important, please remember to pray for the children who will receive

your gifts.

Thank you, and may God bless you!

“Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them;

for of such is the kingdom of heaven”

FUMC Mission Project

The Missions Committee has decided to collect items for cleaning buckets. These items will be

collected through the end of March and then will be taken to the Midwest Mission Distribution

Center. It is from this facility that UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) uses supplies

locally and world wide to respond to needs. Due to the recent flooding the supplies will be

depleted and a great need to restock. Any of the items listed for the cleaning bucket can be left in

the first floor library. Thank you for your participation in this need.

We will also be collecting bicycles. They can be in any size and any condition. Please drop them

off at Mary Frerker’s on the east side of her home. These will also be collected through the end

of March.

Thank you for your support of our Mission projects.
