Psalm for an Epidemic (Psalms 33, 91)

Sing, O you righteous, to Adonai; it is fit that the

upright sing acclaim.

Praise Adonai with the lyre; with the ten-stringed harp sing to God;

שירו־לו שיר חדש היטיבו נגן בתרועה׃sing God a new song; play sweetly with shouts (and

Shofar blasts) of joy.

For the word of Adonai is right; all God’s deeds are faithful.

God loves what is right and just; the earth is full of

Adonai’s love and care.

By the word of Adonai, the heavens were made, by the breath of God’s mouth, all their host.

God heaps up the ocean waters like a mound, stores the deep in vaults.

Let all the earth revere Adonai; let all the

inhabitants of the world tremble before God.

For it was God who said, “Let there be…” God commanded, and it endured.

Adonai frustrates the plans of nations, brings to

naught the designs of peoples.

What Adonai advises endures forever, God’s inner thoughts affect the generations.

Happy is the nation whose God is Adonai. Happy, the people whom God has chosen, to whom God has

given an inheritance.

Adonai looks down from heaven, seeing all humankind.

From a High dwelling-place, God oversees all the

inhabitants of the earth.

It is God who fashions the hearts of them all – and brings their hearts together. It is God who truly

understands all their doings.

Kings are not delivered by a large force; warriors are not saved by great strength;

שקר הסוס לתשועה וברב חילו לא ימלט׃horses are false hope for deliverance; large armies

provide no escape.

Look, the eye of Adonai is on the reverent ones; it is on those who wait for God’s love and care

להציל ממות נפשם ולחיותם ברעב׃to save them from death, to sustain them in famine.

Our soul longs and waits for Adonai. God is our help

For in God, our hearts rejoice, for in God’s holy name we have put our trust.

May your love and care be upon us, as we have put

our hope in You.

“The Thread” by Denise Levertov Something is very gently,

invisibly, silently, pulling at me – a thread

or a net of threads finer than cobweb

and as elastic. I haven’t tried

the strength of it. No barbed hook

pierced and tore me. Was it

not long ago this thread began to draw me?

Or way back? Was I born with its knot about my neck, a bridle?

Not fear but a stirring of wonder makes me

catch my breath when I feel the tug of it

when I thought it had loosened itself and gone.

Holy Spirit (adapted by Rabbi Debra Orenstein) “Ruach kodshecha al tikach mimeni. Do not take your Holy Spirit away from me.” – Shema Koleynu

Rain on me, rain on me, Holy Spirit, rain on me. Yesterday’s gone; today I’m in need. Ruach Hakodesh, rain on me. Shine on me… Breathe on me… Dwell in me… Loving me, loving me, Holy Spirit is loving me. Yesterday’s gone; today I believe. Ruach Hakodesh, barchi oti (Holy Spirit, bless me). Ruach Hakodesh, barchi oti. (Holy Spirit, bless me).
