Waiting on the Lord
“It’s not time yet.”
As a young mother-to-be who was several days overdue in giving birth to my
firstborn, these words from the doctor brought mixed emotions. I had been eagerly
awaiting the arrival of this child for months, making extensive plans and prepara-
tions. And the discomfort of experiencing the last month of pregnancy in the heat of
summer only added to my anticipation. Yet at the same time, I dreaded that moment
because I knew that his coming would bring intense pain, and I wasn’t sure I was
ready for it. But ready or not, at this point I had no choice but to wait a little longer
and use the time to finish up any last-minute details.
In John 7:25-33, Jesus is waiting with mixed emotions for the day when He will
return to His Father. No doubt He is looking forward to leaving this earthly life, with
its trouble and frustration, to go back to the glory of heaven to sit at the right hand of
God forever. Yet at the same time, He knows that this time will bring the intense
physical and emotional pain of persecution from His enemies and abandonment by
His disciples and even God. At this point, however, He has no choice but to wait a
little longer and use the time to finish the work His Father sent Him to do.
As Christians today, we also wait with mixed emotions. We look forward to the
day when we will leave this life on earth, with its hardship and grief, to live in the
splendor of heaven with our Father forever. Yet at the same time, we dread the pain
of death and the eternal separation from those we love who have chosen not to follow
the Lord. Like Jesus, we need to be using the little time we have left to finish the
work God has given us to do and persuade as many as possible to give themselves to
the Lord of life.
Because it’s not time yet.
