Welcome Back Welcome back! The first week has begun very smoothly with all our current and new children settling into their classroom environments. As a staff we look forward to again walking with you in the spiritual and educational journey with your children. At St Patrick’s, we want you to know that your children are very much part of our family too. Parents, as with staff, are all equally important in this journey together, in the life of the children at St Patrick’s Primary School. Principal Visit to Year Five Since the beginning of term, our Year Five students and staff have been busy preparing their new learning space in the old Kindergarten block. It is wonderful to see our students so excited. Last week, whilst one class was busy with their weekly spelling tasks another class was investigating the fairytale genre. As Mrs Grant moved around the classroom, her open ended questions sparked a number of keen responses from the students as they drilled into the characteristics that make up plot, the heroes and villains associated in our favourite fairytales. In listening to the students the tempo of conversation changed as the idea of fracturing a fairytale came to fruition. Suddenly the students changed the point of view and began planning to rewrite their fairytale from another character’s point of view. You could do this at home with your family at the kitchen table, by verbally retelling the story of Jack and Beanstalk or Little Red Riding Hood! Imagine how the giant felt when Jack stole his hen that laid the golden eggs? The exercise, allowed the students to explore the features of fairytales, compare and analyse the characters to create their own story with a very different ending. Enjoy some of the brief stories below. Now that is the spirit of learning!

Red Riding Hood and the Really Good Wolf Once upon a time there was a lovely, nice wolf and his name was Dave. He lived in a small, brown cottage in the dark, gloomy woods. One day a small, naughty girl wearing a cherry red hoodie was dawdling on a long path with a big yellow basket full of hot, soft choc-chip cookies. As she was walking along the path she saw the lovely wolf putting his fragrant, ruby red roses in his beautiful garden. When the wolf went inside his cottage the tiny girl ran over to the wolf’s garden and started ripping out his ruby red roses like an angry, vicious monkey. The wolf looked out the crystal clear window of his cottage and saw the vicious girl ripping out his flaming red roses. He stormed out of his cottage door and speed walked over to the girl and politely asked. “Could you please stop ripping out my red roses?”The girl immediately stopped and rudely said. “No!” and stomped her tiny foot on the red roses. She angrily turned away from the wolf and ran away. She was never to be seen again. Originally written by: Bohdy Martyn, Isaac Railo and Khush Patel. Rewritten and edited by : Bohdy Martyn, Isaac Railo, Khush Patel, Karoua Kaibwa, Charmi Gami and Allira Bugge.

The Emotional Wolf Once upon a time there was a well-mannered wolf named Dave. He lived in a small brick house near a dark spooky forest. One day he saw an undersized mischievous girl in a bright red hood walking down the narrow pathway. She was holding a dark brown basket with biscuits shaped like bunnies. The wolf politely invited the small girl for some coffee at his house. The girl rudely replied, “NO, YOU DIRTY ANIMAL!!!!!” She stomped her foot and kept on walking. The wolf was very emotional and he didn’t like people disrespecting him. He wanted revenge. He followed the girl. The girl was halfway to her Granny’s house. The wolf sprinted to the Granny’s house. Granny fainted and fell onto the bed. The wolf didn’t want to upset the girl so he dressed up as her Granny. He hid Granny in the closet and waited to take his revenge on the nasty little girl. Edited by: James Cheers, Ashmeen Dhillon, Joel Apolloni, Aden McKay, Michael Di Lorenzo and Matthew Pawson.

Little Red Riding Hood Once upon a time there was a lovely, good natured wolf and his name was Dave. He lived in an undersized, dull cottage house in the dim, gloomy woods. One day a small, tiny, mischievous girl wearing a red hood was dawdling on a distant path with a massive, mustard coloured basket full of soft, burning, choc-chip cookies. The small girl saw the handsome wolf putting his lovely scarlet red roses in his pretty garden. When the wolf walked inside his undersized dull cottage the small, tiny mischievous girl started tearing out the gorgeous, scarlet red roses. When the wolf looked out of the crystal clear windows of his cocoa cottage he saw the badly behaved girl tearing out his beautiful scarlet red roses. The wolf politely said, “Can you please stop tearing out my good looking, scarlet red roses?” The sinful, tiny girl harshly said, “No” and stomped her mini foot on the admirable scarlet red roses. A Special Birthday Last week there were many special birthdays but one stood out from everyone else. Our wonderful School Chaplain Mrs Cath Cantanzariti celebrated a fantastic 70

th birthday gala with the staff

in true style –plenty of cake, speeches and food!!!! A great way to start the school term! I wish to acknowledge our school staff in preparing for the gala/ festival! We are so privileged to have such a knowledgeable & caring person working in our school for so many years. Cath, we treasure you and wish you every happiness. Happy Birthday, Cath!

Congratulations to Mr Moraschi Throughout the holidays many staff enjoyed relaxation activities and family time. Our talented Mr Peter Moraschi spent the first

week coaching the State NSW Rugby League team in sunny downtown Narrabeen, the home training ground for the Manly Sea Eagles! On behalf of the school community, I wish to congratulate and acknowledge Pete for his contribution to state rugby league and maybe one day some of these players might represent New South Wales at State of Origin.

21st Century Education. St Patrick’s -Think Globally and Act Locally I encourage parents to view this link below as schools in countries around the world are turning education on its head! Our students today are living in a globalised world. One might ask where our children are heading. One thing we know for sure is it will be a hyper-connected world, with more people and fewer resources, a busy and competitive world which can be viewed with uncertainty. We also know that the workforce will be more mobile and more qualified than ever before and careers expanding to multi-job positions and not to mention skills sets. In response to this, St Patrick’s and educational leaders around the world are responding to noticeable changes already by enabling technologies, personalising learning to engage students in diverse and creative ways. The opportunities might seem enormous, but St Patrick’s is committed ensuring tomorrow’s workers are lifelong learners by engaging in the Australian Curriculum and providing professional development aligned to the National Standards for teachers and leaders that are structured around our students needs . Take a few minutes and see what and how Australian schools are responding to 21

st Century Education.

Enrolments The second phase of our enrolments is now on the way and we again seek the support of current parents to inform friends and new families who are considering a Catholic education at St Patrick’s to notify the office for an enrolment package or a visit. The second round interview date for new families expressing an interest in Kindergarten for 2016, is Saturday August 29th. To all families, if you wish to see our new learning spaces first hand please let us know or you want to know more about us, then visit our comprehensive website at http://web.spgww.catholic.edu.au

Up-dates Around the School Allergies and Asthma Parents, if your child suffers from asthma or has allergies, we request a copy of all action plans be presented to the school office as a top priority. We will photocopy them for you at no cost. I am also very keen to organise a meeting with all families whose children have allergies and other life threatening conditions, ensuring that we can do the best we can for the care of your child.

Mobile Devices No students are to bring mobile phones or other devices to school. If needed for emergency cases, all students need to book their devices in at the front office and collect them at the end of the day. All emergency cases must accompany a letter from parents addressed to the principal stating reasons.

happening in our school, have a

School Website and Facebook.

Travelling on Buses Students travelling on buses must ensure their concession card or bus pass are up-to-date. I strongly urge all students to be seated on buses at all times and that they not move until the bus has come to a complete stop.

Family Information Updates Families, who have moved over the holidays to new home addresses, please let the office know of the new residential address, change of emergency contacts and their details, family circumstances and contact numbers and any new medical conditions.

Stage Level Coordinators Families that encounter issues or concerns must always contact their classroom teacher. The classroom teacher is the first point of contact. Should this not resolve the situation then parents are strongly encouraged to contact the Stage Coordinator. Early Stage One (Kindergarten) Coordinator is Mrs Sandra Campbell, Stage One (Year One and Two) is Mrs Kate LeBrocque, Stage Two (Years Three and Four) is Mr Peter Moraschi and Stage Three (Years Five and Six) is Mrs Lesley Harpur. A grievance procedure is located on the school website.

School Supervision Parents are reminded that school supervision of students begins at 8:30am. Students who arrive at school before this time must be seated in either the 100 Block area Kindergarten to Year 2 and students in Years Three to Six in the bitumen area behind 600 Block.

Extend Outside School Care The school offers Outside School Hours Care which operates from 3:10 pm until 6:00pm each day. We encourage all families to register their child with Extend Australia. Details about registration are available on the school website or brochures from at the Fr O’Dea Hall.

Contacting your Child’s Teacher We encourage parents who are the first teacher, to contact teachers at least once a fortnight. There are several ways in which this can be done. Parents can contact teachers personally on any afternoon except Wednesdays (Staff Meetings are held), all teachers have e-mail addresses or via telephone. Please remember that a teacher will not be able to speak to you during class times or before school. A timetable of school times is available on the school website. If the issue is one of concern that requires time, then we strongly urge parents to make an appointment through the front office.

Absent from School A parent of a child of compulsory school age is obliged to ensure that their child attends school on every school day for the educational program in which he/she is enrolled. Any time during which a student is not attending or participating in their educational program is considered absent and requires explanation. From time to time a student might be absent from school. Parents comply with their compulsory schooling or compulsory participation obligation by providing a satisfactory reason for these absences. A decision is made about whether a reason offered to explain an absence is satisfactory. A reason will be considered satisfactory if it identifies the absence as an allowed absence. Examples of allowed absences may be:

• The student is ill, injured or carrying an infectious disease, medical or dental treatments or procedures

specialised training

sporting events other than those associated with the school or the education system

funerals

cultural reasons, or

family reasons (e.g. special family events, holidays Parents need to notify the school in writing if their child is absent for these reasons. Examples of non- satisfactory explanation include, children being kept home to care for sick relatives or younger children, or because they are needed to help with housework or a family business. Thank you for your support in this important reminder, as parents and staff at St Patrick’s we continue the journey to make a difference together.

Assembly Oh how good it is to be back in the Fr O’Dea hall! Now the Year Two have moved out, parents we are officially back on track with our weekly assemblies being held in the Fr O’Dea Hall every Monday starting at 2:40pm. Congratulations to this week’s recipients for various acts of kindness and courage. Our students continue to do all things well! Visit our Facebook page for more photos!

Welcome Year Two- Cutting Loose This term saw at the beginning of a new era. Year Two staff and students finally moved into their new learning space. Mrs Christine Culla presented the staff with flowers and chocolates but we are not sure if the chocolates were shared with the students! On behalf of the school community, I wish to sincerely thank our staff for the dedication and

commitment in making the learning space a reality.

Principal on Long Service Leave Throughout August I will be accessing some long service leave with my family. We will be travelling to Queensland and Thailand for two family weddings. During my absence, Mr Alan Wedesweiler will be in the chair as Acting Principal. I wish to thank Mr Wedesweiler for stepping up and supporting our family whilst away.

Blessing of Sikh Temple What an honour and privilege to attend the blessing and official opening of the Sikh Temple last Saturday at Hanwood. The Sikh religion believes in a single creator who sustains people of all faith and all are free to practice their beliefs. It was amazing to see the Sikh community from all over the country come together and celebrate this Holy Journey with flower petals scattered everywhere over the temple. On behalf of the St Patrick’s community, I wish to congratulate the Sikh community on the opening and blessing of the city’s new temple, known as Gurdwara –a place to gather in worship.

Survey Executive Summary Three external valuators have provided feedback from our survey and I have included it below for your information. As part of our role, we have embraced the commendations and take up the recommendations are areas for improvement. In planning forward we acknowledge and appreciate the feedback from students and parents as part of our commitment to lifelong learning and improving outcomes for our community. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me through the front office or drop in and say hello.

Executive Summary from Parent and Student Survey

An overwhelming percentage of student and parent respondents said teachers at St Patrick’s expect them to do their best. Many parents also commented positively about the feedback they receive from teachers about their child’s work. Teachers provide useful feedback about their school work and more than 97% of the students who took the survey believe the teachers take their opinions seriously. It was pleasing to hear that our students feel very comfortable talking to St Patrick’s teachers about any concerns regarding learning, feeling safe and unacceptable behaviour. Many of parental respondents overwhelmingly commented our school looking for ways to improve best practice and again significant comments stated that the school maintained playgrounds and classrooms to a high standard.

Areas for growth based on the data received from the surveys, which we are responding through our discussions and planning, include student feedback, management of behaviour and student safety. As partners in education, there is always room for improvement where parents and staff can work together in order to make a difference in everyone’s lives. I look forward to this as we continue to plan and seek your input. Finally, I wish to draw to your attention the short video of our students entitled “I like St Pat’s because” on the link provided as another example of feedback about our school. Enjoy!

From our Assistant Principal

Welcome Back. So welcome back. I trust you enjoyed the opportunities that holidays bring to rest, rejuvenate and reflect. Thank you staff and parents for your engagement in discussions about the children’s learning in the parent Teacher Interviews at the end of Term Two. I encourage you both to continue to “touch base” regularly to continue to maximize the learning potential of the students. I have written to you previously about what I and others consider to be the most important issues in education today. I wrote that I believe there is an urgency to focus on. · Maximising the learner’s potential. · A Catholic Education in a 21

st Century World.

· Building and fostering of relationships. · The need to encourage and foster creativity. · Student engagement in their learning – purposeful – understanding why they are doing what they are doing · Increased Parental engagement in learning. · A focus on social justice · Reflective Practice for Teachers – why and how am I teaching this? · Goal setting. At St. Patrick’s we are having conversations and commencing real action plans to meet and embrace these issues together as a community.

Prepare for the new school day routine As part of our ongoing discussion and assistance for parents and students starting school, we here at St. Patrick’s provide the following tips to assist you, as we know it has been of use to other parents and is featured on the KidsMatter website (www.kidsmatter.edu.au) Starting school involves a big change for your child. Your child will face many challenges as they grow, whether it is starting school, joining a sporting team or going to their first sleepover. The ability to make decisions and solve problems develops as your child learns to cope with daily challenges. Young children are not expected to sort through every issue on their own, and it is likely that they will require lots of guidance from their family. The good news is encouraging your child to take part in problem solving will help them develop this skill over time. The following steps are a useful guide to teaching your child about problem solving.

Encourage your child to take part so that they can slowly learn to do it for themselves.

Remember, it is best to begin when your child is feeling calm and relaxed.

Start with an issue where you know they are likely to experience some success.

If your child is very anxious or angry, help them to calm down first (eg having some quiet time, taking some deep breaths) or leave problem solving for another day or another issue when you know your child is ready to participate.

NSW PSSA Cross Country

Congratulations to Jonathan Codemo who represented at the NSW PSSA Cross Country Carnival in

Sydney last Friday. He ran extremely well, coming in 56th

place. The track was very muddy, but

fortunately the rain held off for Jonathan’s race. The task for Jonathan’s Mum of washing the mud

off his shoes was almost a big a task as running the race itself! This was the first time Jonathan

represented Mackillop and we are very proud of his achievements. Well done Jonathan.

Dear Lord,

We entrust to your love, care & healing all families who are

experiencing grief as a result of the loss of loved ones. May your

healing spirit also restore to good health all who are ill and

others that may be enduring difficult

times in their lives.

In Jesus’ name, AMEN.

Toastmasters

Next Wednesday the 29th of July Michael Slater from the Griffith Toastmasters club will be speaking to the Year 3 students about setting up a public speaking club. Toastmasters is a not for profit organisation that aims to help build leadership skills through helping people become more effective speakers and communicators. Michael will use the knowledge he has gained from being the founder of the Griffith Toastmasters club and from his own experience as a speaker to help train the Year 3 students to start and run their own public speaking club. This is the initiative of his daughter Lucinda who felt that the knowledge that her dad was passing onto her should be shared with her school mates. The aim of the club is to teach the children the fundamentals of public speaking and to help them develop a invaluable life skill.
