IAPMO’s 89th Annual Education & Business Conference6

Following on the heels of a successful 2017 conference, which exceeded expectations for attendance by a pleasantly substantial margin, I am excited to extend this invitation to IAPMO’s

89th annual Education and Business Conference in historical Philadelphia, Sept. 30-Oct. 4. My anticipation for this year’s event is heightened by some unique circumstances, both personal and association wide. First of all, of special interest to all of our members, industry partners, and other stakeholders is the accelerated timeline for development of the 2021 Uniform Codes. Last July, the IAPMO board of directors announced the association’s American National Standards Institute-accredited three-year code development process would start a year earlier for the upcoming cycle. Therefore, the initial Call for Proposals was made in October and we will hold the Assembly Consideration Session during this year’s conference. By changing the timeline in this manner, we will be able to publish the 2021 Uniform Codes in the first quarter of 2020, which we believe will prove extremely beneficial to states, counties, and cities seeking to adopt them. Don’t miss out of your opportunity to play a role in the process!

From a personal standpoint, as I conclude my term as this wonderful association’s president I am filled with a range of emotions. I am proud of the hard work and dedication our board has displayed, excited about the continued growth that is sure to come, and confident our incoming leadership will continue to work cohesively with staff to serve our membership. The best part of concluding my time as president is the comfort in knowing that every year around the last week in September I will still get to spend a week with great friends and the top professionals in our industry, networking, learning, and experiencing all the greatness that is IAPMO. Whether you’re the president or a first-year apprentice IAPMO member, attending conference is an amazing experience that will enrich your life personally and professionally. Please join us in the City of Brotherly Love, home of the Super Bowl champion Eagles, where we will continue to provide excellent educational opportunities, opportunities to network with other industry professionals, and build lifelong friendships. I hope to see you there!

IAPMO’s 89th Annual Education & Business Conference8

IAPMO’s 89th annual Education and Business Conference moves from “the last frontier” to the “Athens of America.” Better known as the “City of Brotherly Love” or simply “Philly,” Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in the nation and the home of numerous firsts, including library (1731), hospital (1751), medical school (1765), stock exchange (1790), zoo (1874), and, oh, yeah, it’s where the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. The sixth-most populous city in the United States, Philadelphia is both an economic and educational hub, with five Fortune 1000 companies and numerous colleges and universities calling it home. The birthplace of the United States Marine Corps, it’s also the home of Rocky, film director M. Night Shyamalan, Hall and Oates, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, and the Super Bowl LII champion Eagles.

A VISITOR’S GUIDE TOOUR HOST CITYStory by Geoff Bilau

September 30 – October 4, 2018 | Philadelphia, PA 9

History Named by founder William Penn in 1682, Philadelphia, Greek for brotherly love, served as the capital of the Pennsylvania colony. Thanks to it’s port on the Delaware River and peaceful goodwill between the colonists and the indigenous Lenape Indians, the city rapidly grew into America’s most important city. Given its central location among the original 13 colonies, Philadelphia emerged as a meeting place for America’s revolutionaries and founding fathers, hosting the first and second Continental Congresses, the latter at which the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, and the Constitutional Convention in 1787. While the White House and U.S. Capitol were being constructed in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia served as the temporary capital of the nation from 1790-1800. An influx of European immigrants, mostly from Germany and Ireland, as well as the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural south, saw the city’s population swell from 31,000 to 220,000 from 1880-1930.

Entertainment & Sightseeing

History, culture, and cuisine converge to make Philadelphia an American tourist’s dream destination. Four centuries old architecture, cobblestone streets, and landmarks are only one aspect of the city’s charms. Museums, music, restaurants, and nightlife round its myriad offerings. Let’s start with history, because Philadelphia is dripping with it.The Historic District, spanning from the Delaware River to 7th Street and from Vine Street to Lombard Street, represents some of the nation’s most iconic monuments and attractions. The Liberty Bell Center, Independence Hall, where the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, the Museum of the American Revolution, the Benjamin Franklin Museum, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia are all places where visitors can be steeped in living U.S. history. Benjamin Franklin and several signers of the Declaration ofIndependence are buried at the Christ Church burial grounds. Since a lot of us think with our stomachs when visiting a new city, it’s no surprise that the most visited attraction in Philadelphia is Reading Terminal Market, an indoor food paradise and one-stop shop for everything your tastebuds desire. Nearly 7 million people visit the market each year.

Opened in 1874, the aforementioned Philadelphia Zoo, America’s first zoo, features Zoo360, the world’s first system of see-through mesh trails crossing over pedestrian paths and connecting habitats so the animals can explore the campus safely amongst the visitors.

Film lovers will recognize the steps leading up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art — Rocky Balboa triumphantly climbed them in the 1975 Academy Award winning film— but there’s more here than some famous stairs. Renaissance, American, Asian, impressionist, and contemporary masterpieces greet more than 750,000 visitors each year.

Philadelphia is also, of course, a sports town and it will no doubt still be buzzing about its Eagles come conference time. The 2018 NFL season will be well underway and the defending Super Bowl champions just might be home. The city is also home to MLB’s Phillies (home Sept. 28-30 vs. Atlanta Braves), the NBA’s 76ers (preseason will be underway), and the NHL’s Flyers (season will be just about to start).

The 2018 UPC has a new Water Demand Calculator in Appendix M, representing the first comprehensive update to Hunter’sCurve in almost a century. But now, plans are submitted to your Department requesting the alternate method of Appendix M. What do you do? How doyou use Appendix M for plan check? What do you need to know for inspection? This session will help the Authority Having Jurisdiction exercise his/her discretionary power through a better understanding of how Appendix M isproperly applied in the plumbing design.Examples of compliance and non-compliance will be presented to test the understanding of the audience. Without getting into all the mathematic intricacies, a conceptual presentation of what the Water Demand Calculator does and how it works will help the AHJ understand its function and use. AHJ’s need to have confidence in the application of this new and desperately needed design tool. This session will provide that confidence!

SPOUSES’ AND COMPANIONS’KEYNOTE SPEAKER –

Christine LusitaAuthor of The Right Fit Formula

All my life I’d been hearing about workouts and diets that were supposed to be good for me.

For years, I treated my body like an experiment I failed at daily. I hit the cardio equipment like a maniac, obsessed over Jane Fonda tapes, weighed food, drank shakes, ate pre-packaged meals, fasted, you name it. And then when I still didn’t look like Christy Turlington, I’d park my butt on the couch, get out the ham and cheese sandwiches and quit. Until I’d hear about the next get-thin-quick fad (and we all know there’s no shortage of those) and then start up again on Monday.

Each time I ‘failed’, I felt as if I was the problem. I knew something had to change, and it wasn’t about finding the next gimmick. It was about finding what worked for me.

So I decided to get real about my body. I took a hard look at how I was treating it and decided to be brutally honest about what I would or wouldn’t do. I learned to set reasonable goals that inspired me without comparing myself to others. I learned to tackle that tough inner critic that derails all of us on our journey to live healthier and happier. I learned to carve out time for myself without guilt and to celebrate my accomplishments. I learned to prioritize and above all, to value who I am as I am. Which is how I came to... ”My Philosophy for success...Do what feels good”. The truth is this: If something doesn’t feel good--whether it’s a food plan, workout or new habit--you’ll never stick with it. But if it makes sense to your mind and feels good to your body, you’re golden. Success is a given, and then—what a feeling.
