PRE-INSTITUTE WORK

BSILI Pre-Institute Homework

1. Read “Promoting and assessing value creation in communities and networks: a

conceptual framework” by Wenger, Trayner, de Laat (attached). Please pay particular

attention to pages 7-17, and choose 2-3 “golden lines” that stand out to you (you will

be sharing these lines with the group).

2. Bring your campus master calendars, especially dealing with professional development

3. Be prepared to work on the Student Success Initiative (SSI) that your team intends to

focus on during the coming year.

! Bring application you wrote for BSILI (and any relevant updates or additions)

! Bring the evidence that the college used to make the decision to focus on the

chosen SSI.

! What plans, data, etc., did you use to focus on your problem? Bring a copy of these

plans and data on a flash drive (even if they are available online, have an electronic

copy just in case we overload the network)

! Select an existing program/activity on your campus that is already addressing the

SSI that you have already identified; come with a 1-2 page summary including

details about the following:

! What is the program?

! How does it work?

! How do you know that it is successful?

! What problem was it designed to address?

4. 3CSN’s Program Evaluator Michael Harnar will be sending a Pre-Institute Survey –

please fill it out by June 1, 2013

Chrome extensions bundle (http://bitly.com/bundles/vadenbd/c) – There are a number of extensions for chrome that will make things easier/more efficient for you to process, tag, reuse materials from the web.

• Acrobat reader installed (go to http://get.adobe.com/reader/ and download the latest version for free)

• the latest version of Flash player installed (go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and download for free)

• the lastest version of Silverlight installed (http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/)

• If you are using a laptop from your campus, see if they will give you administrative rights to your laptop so that you will be able to install or use programs without limitations.

3. If you do not already have accounts with these sites, please create them before you come up the mountain. (plus have your passwords handy and try them out to make sure they work.) - (http://bitly.com/bundles/vadenbd/d - this will take to one place for all of the sites.) All of the software and accounts that we are asking you to utilize have free accounts or are open source. We are NOT asking you to pay for any of the applications or sites, many of which do have pro accounts that give you increased storage or additional capabilities.

• Google Apps – Includes access to Picasa, Drive, Hangout, Youtube, Keep, and others.

• Dropbox – Cloud based storage

• Evernote –clip articles, images, documents from the web, as well as photos and voice memos on the mobile apps and have them all stored and tagged in one place.

• Simplenote – a cloud based note app that has mobile apps as well as browser extensions that allow you to keep all sorts of text notes synced and available.

• Wordpress.com – we use Wordpress installations throughout 3CSN’s web properties, Similar to Google or Facebook, their account can be used for all of their products (Simplenote was just acquired by Automattic, the holding company of Wordpress)

• Mural.ly – this is a idea board type of site. Members of your team can add videos, text, pictures (basically anything to your Murally “room.” Great for brainstorming and organizing ideas (which we do often.)

4. Please bring headphones to use with your laptop. Earbuds work and can be purchased at stores like Target for $10.

5. We will be working with photos and video throughout the course of the week. If you have smartphone (iPhone, Galaxy, or similar) become familiar with how to take pictures and film with you phone and how to transfer these from your phone to your laptop.

It is very important that you join the Facebook group (it is a private group). You will find there more information and can have your questions answered (about all things BSILI—not just technology).
