The Toro Company Irrigation Division hasintroduced a Soil Moisture Control Systemthat they claim will reduce irrigation-waterconsumption by an average of 50 percentwhile maintaining excellent turf quality.

The system is designed to tell the irriga-tion controller when to stop irrigating ratherthan when to start. The heart of the systemis a Cuming-type 4-EC ceramic soil sensor.It is completely inert, self-compensating,permanently calibrated, andmai ntenance-free.

The unit is manufactured to dehydrate ata preset tension level close to the soil'smoisture capacity. This process radicallychanges the output of the sensor, whichsends a signal to the irrigation controllerwhen the soil is moist enough. Thiseliminates the need for controllerreprogramming because the sensor auto-matically adjusts to climate and seasonalchanges.
