What Does a PSI Investigator Do?

A presentence investigator reports detailed information including past criminal history, social history, medical diagnoses, and much more about a defendant that has not yet been sentenced for his or her crime by the court. An interview is usually conducted and all the information gathered is consolidated into an easy-to-read report for the court.

What Does a PSI Intern Do?

A PSI Intern has essentially the same duties as the investigator does. We get the opportunity to interview criminals and fill out PSI reports. Additionally, with any internship site, there are often tasks around the site that need to be done in order to keep the facility running as fast and as organized as possible that are specifically saved for interns.

How does this relate to Psychology?

• Interviews with criminals can give hands on experience to the psychological illness/substance abuse

• In-Depth view of how substance abuse and/or psychological illness can affect behavior as seen through investigative processes

• In-Depth understanding of Ohio Court Systems

• Experience with other aspects of Criminal Justice System including Law Enforcement
