Pre-Visit Information for Teachers and Group Leaders

The National Trust is recognised as being Britain’s biggest
classroom, and is one of the largest educational resources in the
world.
We want your group to have an exciting and inspirational time at
Winchester City Mill. This pack is intended to give you the information
needed to ensure you get the most from your visit.

Opening Times
We are open all year round. Educational visits are available any time between:
10:30am and 2:30pm (Dec – Feb)
10:30am and 3:30pm (Mar – Nov)
Group Sizes
35 children is the maximum we can accommodate at a time.
Cost per pupil
Entry fee:
£2 per child.
FREE with Education

Miller’s Guided Tour (Optional):
£1 per child.
- Payment can be made either in advance, by invoice or
on the day of your visit.
- Each class will receive a bag of Winchester City Mill
wholemeal flour to take back to school.
Clothing
Warm clothing is essential as the Mill is not heated.
Flat shoes are recommended as there are steep stairs leading to the Lower
Floor.
Health & Safety
We recommend the following ratios of adults to children as a minimum:
Under 5s 1:6
Key Stage 1 1:6
Key Stage 2 1:8
Key Stage 3 & 4 1:10
- Winchester City Mill staff and volunteers should not be counted as part of this ratio.
- The behavior of your group remains the responsibility of your school staff at all times.
VISITING THE MILL

Parking and drop off access
There is no parking on site.
The coach drop off point is
next to King Alfred’s Statue.
If you are travelling by minibus
and need to park, you will have
to check which carparks allow
minibuses.
Toilets
There are no public toilets in
the Mill. The nearest toilet
facilities are in Abbey Gardens.
Lunch
Due to limited space, groups are unable to eat packed lunches on site.
We suggest:
- St. John’s House (The Broadway, Winchester SO23 9BE; 01962 864234)
Rooms are free but you will need to call in advance to check availability.
On request, the staff can set up a tuck shop for your group.
- Winchester Guildhall (The Broadway, Winchester, SO23 9GH; 01962 840820)
You will need to book a room in advance, costing around £60 for an hour.
- Abbey Gardens (The Broadway, Winchester, SO23 9GH)
Open daily. Free to the public with an enclosed children's play area.
VISITING THE MILL

All directed activities that Winchester City Mill offers have been
checked for safety through a full risk assessment (included on page 5).
As a result, appropriate measures are in place to effectively manage the
identified risks.
However, group leaders are expected to carry out their own risk
assessment prior to their visit. All pre-booked educational trips are
entitled to a free pre- visit; a useful way to prepare for your time with
us.

An educational visit to Winchester City Mill…
NOTE: Timings and sessions are approximate and will vary according to your
group age, size and requirements.
Lasts approximately 1 hour (either in the morning or afternoon)
Allows groups of up to a maximum of 35 pupils at any one time on site.
Comprises of 1, 2 or 3 rotated sessions:
- A guided tour and demonstration of the milling process (optional)
- Self-led interactive activities.
- Staff-led activity
You will see two floors of the building and also the small island garden to the
rear of the Mill.
If there are more than 35 children visiting, you will need to split into 2 groups: a
morning and afternoon session. Whilst one group visits the Mill, the other is
free to explore Winchester.
Exploring Winchester
We recommend several places around Winchester to visit.
OUTLINE OF A TYPICAL VISIT
The River Itchen You can walk close to the river in many places and see more of the wildlife.
Winchester Cathedral There’s so much to see here. One of the best ways to explore is with a tour. Hear about Winchester during Anglo-Saxon times and what changed when the Normans invaded, and the many characters and events that have shaped the history of England and left their mark on this magnificent building.
Winnall Moors Nature Reserve Explore the moors and wind your way through the fen and riversides discovering the wildlife that flourishes there.
City Museum With free admission, three galleries tell the story of Winchester's past from the Iron Age to the present. Features include mosaics and reconstructed Victorian High Street shops.
The Great Hall Experience one of the finest surviving medieval halls, which contains the legendary Round Table, and the medieval gardens.

NOTE: Our millers are volunteers and do not work every day. If you would like to take advantage of our guided tours and milling demos, please check their availability when arranging your visit.

This is only a basic overview. Please write any additional
subjects/objectives you would like covered on the booking form and
your guide will tailor the tour to suit your school's curriculum needs.

NOTE: These activities are led and supervised by your school staff.
The Mill room interactive activities and informative displays are
designed to support children’s understanding of various aspects of
the Mill.
Pupils will have the opportunity
(approximately 30 minutes)
to explore and learn about
various aspects of the Mill.
There is an accompanying
Quiz trail (KS2) or ‘I Spy’ trail (KS1)
available to fill in as you explore.

These activities are designed around various aspects of the Mill and
intended to support Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils’ learning in the classroom
or during your visit to the Mill. If you choose to use any of these
activities at the Mill, you will need to print them out and bring them
with you on the day of your visit.

The Mill is open to schools and other organised groups but please be
aware that the Mill will also be open to the public during the day of
your visit.
Booking is essential
We can only accommodate a maximum of 35 children at a time. Check
the availability of our milling demonstration and tours in advance to
ensure you get the most from your visit.

Education Group membership (EGM) gives non-profit, full-time
education groups free entry to National Trust properties.
