Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Chil-
dren: Wednesday, January 22nd is designated as a par-
ticular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal
guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations
to the dignity of the human person committed through acts
of abortion. The over 56 million abortions since the 1973
decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with
heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a
‘throwaway culture.’ However, we have great trust in
God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in
Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we
believe that our prayers are heard. As individuals, we are
called to observe this day through the penitential practices
of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms.

Archbishop Schnurr in the coming week or so. Please

Hello Friends in Christ,
The following are “five marks of a Catholic family” that stem
from an article by Dr. Gregory Popcak, the Executive Director of
the Pastoral Solutions Institute, an organization dedicated to
helping Catholics find faith-filled solutions to tough marriage,
family, and personal problems, and a contributor to the “Catholic
Exchange”. I would like to take the five marks and provide my
own spiritual commentary and possible dreams and hopes for our
own families here in Preble County, OH.
1. “Catholc Families Worship Together” - Gathered around the
Eucharist every Sunday helps remind us that our families and
homes are called to imitate what we worship. As St. Augustine
once said, “We become what we receive.” Another title for the
Eucharist is the Sacrament of Charity (Love). If we follow some
simple logic...we are called to imitate that which we receive. If we
receive the sacrament of charity then how do we become the
charity needed in our home and family today? An important
pointer for any family is to always bring kids to worship. Even if
the little ones are distracted, noisy, or just being toddlers...they
are a part of our big family, the Church. All children and parents
are welcome and don’t worry about the kids being louder than my
homily...for I pray that “LORD, our God, how majestic is your
name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants you have established a
stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the aven-
ger” (Psalm 89:1-2). To worship well involves all our voices
joining together in one chorus of exultant praise.
2. “Catholic Families Pray Together” - I am always reminded of
this when the Chili-Cheese Coneys are hot and ready for me at
Skyline when I make lunch visits there. They are delivered by the
waitress on a plate for me to enjoy. I prepare myself with the
fork, if needed, and napkins. Then as I begin to pick up that coney
with all the hunger soon to be satisfied. It is most often that at this
moment I remember what my parents always taught my family,
namely, “Pray before you eat!” So, delaying my hunger just a
little bit more, I put the coney down and make the sign of the
cross and pray. I think often in my prayers before and after meals
about the family that is still with me on this earth, those family
members who have passed, and the greater family of God with all
my friends in the Church. I try to imagine all of them sitting
around the table with me and sharing in this food and conversa-
tion. Then, after giving thanks, the coney stands no chance. Per-
haps, we can pray in the fast food line before we get the food, or
actually try to set time for lunch and dinner all gathered around a
table as a family. Prayer is always a good way to begin or end
anything we might be doing as a family. Food, Family, and
Prayer seem to be a sure fire recipe for carrying on the faith for
generations to come.
I will continue next week with the remaining points...stay tuned.
God love you,
Fr. David Doseck

Remember the Book from Christmas? Fr. David
Doseck would like to host six evenings of reflection
on the book, Rediscovering the Saints. Each session is
hosted on a Tuesday evening at 6:30pm-7:30pm at
Visitation Church Hall (or Basement). Starts on Tues.
- Jan. 21st thru Feb. 25th. No need to RSVP. It will be
a great time spent together talking about our favorite
saints and the thoughts provoked from reading the free
Christmas book you received.
Thank you to all who generously donated to the Giving
Tree this Christmas season. Your generosity has touched
many people in Preble County. “The support of generous
donors like you makes it possible for the women and chil-
dren to live in a violence free environment” (YMCA Do-
mestic Violence Shelter). “We very much appreciate all the
donations you give so that we can continue to provide for
mothers and babies” (Birthright of Eaton).
