This issue is focused on family fun, tying in with the great events being brought to

WELCOME NOTE

THE CHANGING FACE OF SURFERS PARADISE

You would have undoubtedly noticed the improvements made to the Surfers Paradise backdrop of late; from the refreshing changes on Cavill Avenue and the Surfers

Paradise Foreshore, to the prestigious and internationally recognised Soul development, locals and tourists alike are flocking to the area to take advantage of the recent upgrades.

The objective of the redevelopment was to create a space on the Surfers Paradise Foreshore where man-made attractions were equal to the natural beauty of the surrounds, and so far the venture has proven to be a great success. The upscale redevelopment is attracting a new class of tourists to the area who are enjoying the fact that the Gold Coast is living up to its reputation of coastal luxury.

For locals, the upgrades have ultimately reconnected the heart of Surfers Paradise to its finest attraction: the beach. Newly built

pedestrian pavements, ramps and stairs all lead directly to its shores. Injections of urban furniture and lively beach markets are turning the space into a functional, contemporary hub for all to enjoy. While special care has been taken in consideration of the pedestrian environment, the new look and feel is also providing ample opportunity for business spaces, all of which are contributing to a booming commercial precinct.

Practically speaking, the upgraded roadways, new civil and drainage works and alterations to street services and street lighting have contributed to the overall feeling that change is for the better among locals. The design has de-cluttered, refreshed and encouraged local engagement of the area, while inspiring newfound appreciation of Surfers Paradise from an international audience.

The new layout on Cavill Mall integrates seamlessly with the adjoining area of Soul.

Rising magnificently to an awe-inspiring 77 levels high, Soul is the outstanding centre point of the Surfers Paradise Foreshore. Situated directly on the revived beachfront esplanade, you will be greeted with sublime views from the top floors, while down below, passers by can enjoy an exceptional fine dining experience at Soul’s signature restaurant, Seaduction (read more on Seaduction on page 44). The surrounding retail precinct boasts an array of casual international cuisines, with some of the most renowned designer labels such as Prada, Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Cartier all within easy walking distance.

The major public redevelopment means exciting times ahead for Gold Coast residents and visitors. While plenty has been accomplished, there is much more to come for the future of Surfers Paradise.

HOLIDAY SAFEJust as important as it is to have a fun, family

escape in Surfers Paradise, it’s also important to

remember to stay responsible for your personal

safety. Keeping Surfers Paradise safe is everyone’s

responsibility and our friendly police officers are

always ready to offer a helping hand. Remember to

take the instructions of any uniformed individual;

this includes Surf Life Savers, who work to make

our beach as safe as possible. Surfers Paradise is

one of the most famous holiday destinations in the

world for all the right reasons. Let’s work together

and help our lifeguards and police officers, to ensure

its reputation as a safe haven continues.

DON’T FORGET TO SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK, SLIDEWith an average of 245 fine days a year, the sun is

almost always out in Surfers Paradise. That’s why it’s

important to always apply sunscreen before heading

outdoors and cover up with a hat and sunglasses

when you’re out and about, even on a cloudy or

overcast day. Carry a small tube of sunscreen with

you for touch-ups throughout the day and you’ll be

sure to stay sun safe from dusk ‘til dawn.

COAST FAREWELLS LOCAL PROPERTY GURUIt was with great sadness that we recently

farewelled one of the Gold Coast’s best-known

property figures, Tony Tooma. His unexpected

passing has left a hole in the industry that will

be hard to fill.

Hugely respected across the wider Gold Coast

community, Tony counted influential Gold

Coasters such as Mayor Tom Tate and Federal

MP for Moncrieff Steve Ciobo among his friends.

He was actively involved in many community

and charity projects, serving on the Gold Coast

Rapid Transit Precinct Advisory Group and acting

as the auctioneer at the Gold Coast Mayoress's

Charity Ball. Tony was also much loved in the

local Greek community.

His contribution to the constant development

of Surfers Paradise will always be remembered

and our thoughts and well wishes go out to

his family.

Recognised as the world’s leading entertainment brand for children, the Nickelodeon network - encompassing the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. pay-TV stations here in Australia - really are doing it for the kids. With a strong belief in the family unit, Nickelodeon have managed to create a string of breakout shows and characters that have not only achieved cult status with the under 15s, but have become secret guilty viewing pleasures for grown ups too.

Take, for example, SpongeBob SquarePants. When this “absorbent and yellow and porous” larrikin made his debut on Nickelodeon in 1999, it’s hard to think anyone could have predicted the success he was destined for. But more than a decade later, and SpongeBob SquarePants is still Nickelodeon’s highest-rating show of all time. The show’s innovative ideas and clever writing gave

it a universal appeal that has stood the test of time, gaining celebrity fans including US President Barack Obama and former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who reportedly watch the show with their children.

But it’s not just animated characters like SpongeBob SquarePants who have made Nickelodeon the biggest players in children’s entertainment. The network is also loved for its real life antics such as Slime Time. Running from 2000 – 2003, the Slime Time Live television show was a live show in which audience members were selected to participate in a quiz on stage. If they answered a question incorrectly, they would be ‘slimed’; a bucket (or three) of gooey green mess would be poured over their heads. Slime Time has now been reinvented as a stage show, and will be making an appearance at the 2013 Surfers Paradise Kids Weekend (along with SpongeBob SquarePants himself)!

P: Why do you think kids love slime?L&W: Being slimed is the ultimate honour.

It’s a life-changing experience. Nothing can

describe it. Until you’ve been completely

dunked in slime, you really haven’t lived.

We’ve been slimed heaps of times and we

still love it to the max.

P: What’s it like to be slimed? L&W: Imagine Christmas Day combined

with your birthday. Now, times that feeling

by TEN and make it into a liquid and spray it

everywhere! We can't wait to host SLIMEFEST

again. You can watch it on Nickelodeon on

Monday 30 September. It’s all our Christmases

and birthdays coming at once, with a

soundtrack of awesome live music.

P: Why do you think SpongeBob SquarePants is still so universally popular?L&W: For a start, he lives in a pineapple under

the sea, which is a pretty great real estate

location. But more importantly, he’s seriously

funny, and eternally positive and optimistic

no matter what the world serves up. Plus he

has a pet snail called Gary.

P: Who’s your favourite character in the show?L&W: Squidward, because he plays the

clarinet and that's classy.

P: Do you have a favourite SpongeBob SquarePants saying/quote?L&W: “It’s no secret that the best thing about

a secret is secretly telling someone your

secret, thereby adding another secret to

their secret collection of secrets, secretly.”

P: You’re a duo like SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Starfish - which one are you more like?L&W: Well I (Wyatt) think I'm more like

SpongeBob SquarePants because I'm cute

and have a funny giggle. Luke is more like

Patrick Starfish because he's not all there

and goes "duuuuh" a lot.

P: You were recently on the Gold Coast filming the latest series of Camp Orange at Sea World – what did you love about the place?L&W: All of the ANIMALS! I loved meeting all

of them, the polar bears, the dolphins, and

the seals. One of the seals gave me a big kiss!

Precinct had a chat to Nickelodeon hosts Luke and Wyatt and gained some insight into all things Nickelodeon.

You can catch up with SpongeBob SquarePants in person as part of this year’s Surfers Paradise Kids Weekend lineup. For more details on show times, please read our article on pages 14 – 16.

PLAN AHEADMake a list of the activities and attractions the family want to see and devise a schedule to make sure you don’t miss out on anything. Don’t forget to pencil in times to sit down for a snack and lunch.

BE ORGANISEDPack your bags and the car the night before and include a clean change of clothes for each child in a separate clear zip lock bag, labelled with their name. Don’t forget the sunscreen, hat, a few snacks and some cool drinks.

BE IN THE KNOWTake the map from the centre of this magazine with you – we’ve highlighted the best spots to park and available rest room facilities so the hard work is done for you! Take a photo of our 10 for 10 article (page 42) on your phone, and that way you’ve got our handy list of kid-friendly restaurants right in your pocket and ready to go!

TRAVEL LIGHTOnly take the bare essentials with you so that you are not carting around a huge backpack. Limit your items to a few snacks, wet wipes, phone, wallet, keys and a small drink bottle that can be refilled. Prams will not be admitted into the main stage pavilion, so keep an eye out for the pram storage facility, and store your set of wheels there.

MAKE A WEEKEND OF ITRather than trying to cram everything into one day, take it slow and make a whole weekend of it! This will allow for a much more enjoyable, stress-free experience for all.

Page 18: Precinct Magazine The Kids Edition 2013

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I grew up on the Gold Coast, attending Bellevue

Park for primary school and All Saints for high

school. I furthered my education at Griffith

University and started in radio on the Gold Coast

Where were you born?

Christchurch, New Zealand

How long have you lived on the Gold Coast?

My family moved here from New Zealand when

I was two – my Dad took a teaching job at T.S.S.

and the rest is history!

What is your favourite thing about Surfers Paradise?

The beautiful beaches and the great free events

that happen throughout the year!

What’s one thing about Surfers Paradise you

think the rest of the world should know?

How beautiful, clean and relaxing our beaches

are. Our great restaurants and night spots are also

something that the world needs to know about.

If you could fly any celebrity in the world, living or

dead, into Surfers Paradise for a day, who would

it be and where would you take them?

I would have mojitos with Marilyn Monroe at any of

the Surfers Paradise bars – I think she’d love them all!

What does your ideal day in Surfers Paradise

consist of?

Family time with my son Jaxon and my husband

Paul, hanging out on the beach and having lunch

together. Then we’d head off to dinner with some

friends and relax with some drinks.

The Surfers Paradise Kids Weekend has a pretty

cool line up this year – what do you think Jaxon

will be most excited by?

I think he’s going to love it all, but he will especially

enjoy SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick

Starfish!

Spending a whole day out with a little one can

be pretty daunting, especially for those who are

still fairly new to the parenting game. Do you

have any survival tips you can share?

Lots of treats! And always know where an ice

cream shop is!

Surfers Paradise is one of Australia’s top family

holiday destinations – why do you think it is so

popular with families?

There’s so much for everyone to do, it has

everything you need in the one spot - putt putt,

extreme fun like the Slingshot, cafés, shops,

restaurants and clubs. It’s got something for every

member of the family.

What do you think is Surfers Paradise's best-

kept secret?

I don’t know if it’s a secret or not, but the walk

along The Esplanade is such a great way to start

the day! Vapiano’s is also a favourite, and the

Beachfront Markets are also a great wander!

Finish this sentence: If you're visiting Surfers

Paradise for the first time, don't forget your ...

sunscreen and a good pair of shoes – you’ll fall

in love with it and spend more time than you

thought enjoying it!

Held from November 7 to 10 2013,

the Australian PGA Championship is

returning to the Gold Coast for the

first time since 1975. Presented by

Coca-Cola, the championship will be

co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and

OneAsia, and promises to deliver not only four

riveting days of action on the green, but also a

number of great activities and events outside of

the tour schedule as well.

Monday November 4 will kick off the week’s

festivities with a practice round, which is open

to spectators at no cost. Tuesday offers another

practice round followed by Dinner with the Stars

– a Championship Dinner at the RACV Royal Pines

Resort, where you can rub shoulders with players,

sponsors and other high profile personalities.

Tables of 10 are available at a cost of $4,000.

Wednesday will see the PGA’s top players pair

up with celebrity partners for Pro-Am Day and

Thursday brings the serious strokes in Round 1 of the

tournament. Round 2, on Friday, has been named

Wear Green Day and spectators are encouraged

to wear green in celebration of hometown hero,

Adam Scott’s, recent Masters victory.

A three-time winner on the PGA Tour of

Australasia, Adam’s best finish in the Australian

PGA Championship so far was in 2011, when he

tied for fourth place. Having obtained the coveted

Green Jacket, Adam is excited to be playing on

home turf. “To be able to play at home at Royal

Pines is going to be a lot of fun”, he enthused.

“The Gold Coast has been so supportive of me

my whole career so it’s a good chance for me to

hopefully go out and say thanks and play well.”

PGA CEO, Brian Thorburn, is just as energised

about Adam’s inclusion in this year’s line up of

players. “The significance of Adam’s victory is

immense and we’re very excited to welcome him

home to the Gold Coast”, he said. “To have Adam

contend our Championship for its return to the

Gold Coast is a wonderful opportunity, and we’re

sure the fans will come out in their thousands to

congratulate Scotty.”

To celebrate the PGA’s partnership with RACV for

the Australian PGA Championship, members of

RACV and its affiliated motoring clubs are being

offered a huge 50% discount off the standard

ticket gate price when booking online at the

unique Ticketek URL distributed to them by their

respective auto clubs. Those who take advantage

of the offer before September 30 will also go into

the draw to win a ‘money-can’t-buy’ experience,

with the opportunity to walk inside the ropes

with a leading player as well as lunch for two

in a corporate marquee during Round 1 of the

Championship and a set of Cleveland golf clubs.

Moving from its traditional spot as one of the

final events of the PGA Tour of Australasia

and OneAsia season has so far proved to be

successful, with a number of high profile players

in negotiations to join the line up. “Our priority

for this year is to ensure we position ourselves to

maximise opportunities for the Australian PGA

Championship, in terms of attracting both a quality

field and the fans”, said Mr Thorburn.

The event is also set to deliver significant economic

and tourism benefits for Surfers Paradise, which has

established itself as the unofficial entertainment

hub for the Gold Coast’s sporting events. With

a huge choice of accommodation, hundreds of

food outlets and restaurants to suit every budget,

plus a wide range of activities and experiences for

all ages, Surfers Paradise delivers sports fans an

entertainment precinct like no other.

It’s getting close to that time of year again: the race that stops the Gold Coast. While the drivers are gearing up for three days of unforgiving street circuits to claim the inaugural Enduro Cup, event managers are working around the clock to deliver another jam-packed ARMOR ALL

GOLD COAST 600 that captures the anticipation and action of the racing.

This year boasts the biggest entertainment program in the event’s history plus plenty of action on and off the track. ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 is bringing in US rap-rock outfit Gym Class Heroes to headline Friday’s concert,

supported by Spiderbait and Havana Brown. An all-Aussie affair on Saturday night will see The Presets, Grinspoon and Stafford Brothers take the stage.

If you are bringing the family, there will be an abundance of activities to keep the kids entertained. Trackside tickets allow you to get the best of the circuit and soak up all the colour and atmosphere right in the heart of

the action, with kids under 12 receiving free entry when accompanied by a paying adult. Like last year, there will be a fantastic ‘Family Zone’ catering to kids. Coupled with carnival rides, face painting and appearances from the Gold Coast Titans and Gold Coast Suns, it’s an all day event for the whole family. Be sure to check out the Disney-Pixar Fun Zone, a huge success last year and set to be even better this year. For locals and spectators coming from far and wide, the Gold Coast will be providing free public transport available on certain services to and from the event with a pre-purchased ticket. Don’t miss a moment of the Gold Coast’s most exciting annual event. Tickets available via Ticketek.

Alex Davison comes from a long line of racing car champions. The son of Australian Formula Two champion Richard Davison, and grandson of four-time Australian Grand Prix winner Lex Davison, Alex has a lot of history behind him when he returns to the V8 Supercars Championship in 2013 as the driver of the Charlie Schwekolt’s #18 entry run out of the Ford Performance Racing Workshop.

A local resident of the Gold Coast, we talk to Alex about the upcoming ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 and his favourite things to do on the Gold Coast with his wife Melanie and kids, Lily and Luke.

P: Alex, what inspired you to become a race car driver?

A: My family has been involved in motor racing for as long as I can remember. My grandfather started racing in the forties, and my father continued with the sport. From the moment I was born I remember Dad racing and it was something that I was naturally interested in.

I started at around 11 years old, driving go-karts and progressed through the ranks. There was never any pressure to pursue a career in motor sport, it was really just something I naturally wanted to do. I have a lot of energy and passion for it, it’s something I love doing and I am fortunate enough to be able to make a living out of it.

P: How do you feel you are going in the lead up to the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600?

A: We’re halfway through the season, and overall we are feeling really positive. It has been a learning curve, but we are making good progress. Our form is really starting to come together and we have been qualifying consistently in the top 10 – it’s a good time of year to be competitive going into the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600. The ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 is really like a home race for me, and it will be good to be up on that podium, holding a surfboard!

P: Will Melanie and the kids be cheering you on this year?

A: Melanie and the kids will definitely be attending this year; we are local to the Gold

Coast so it’s not too far for them to travel. I have two kids under the age of five (Lily, four-and-a-half and Luke, nine months) and there will be plenty of great entertainment for them at the event. It’s a fantastic atmosphere for the whole family. There is a good line up of bands this year too for the adults – not that I will be staying out late!

P: What difference do you think the family friendly aspect will have on spectators and locals this year?

A: I think there has been a big effort in the last couple of years to ensure there is a family-fun side to the event. The marquee tents and on and off track events for the kids - it all makes it more child-friendly than previous years. Overall the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 has become a lot more family oriented. It’s the perfect event for spectators and locals to really enjoy the best of what the Gold Coast has to offer. Good weather, competitive racing and a great atmosphere.

P: What types of events and activities can families enjoy this time round?

A: I would definitely encourage spectators at this year’s event to bring the whole family and make a mini-break out of it. Melanie plans on taking the kids to the Disney-Pixar Fun Zone. There will be carnival rides, the SeaFM stage and plenty of festival activities.

P: As a local resident, what are some of your favourite sights and sounds of the Gold Coast?

A: We are originally from Melbourne, but both my kids have grown up on the Gold Coast so we love to take full advantage of the weather and attractions here. We live close to the theme parks. We make sure we get a family pass for the year - it’s still a novelty for the kids! Winter is actually my favourite time of the year. The weather is great; you can wear shorts and t-shirts and take the kids down to a park. On any given weekend we can go down to the foreshore. The kids love getting fish and chips and enjoying the outdoors. That’s really the perfect weekend for us.

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT

GOLDEN BOYS From humble beginnings to world domination in dance music, the Stafford Brothers have gained international recognition amongst the best DJ performers and producers in the game, and it all started a decade ago on a dance floor at a small lounge bar in the heart of the Gold Coast.

The Stafford Brothers return in October to take the stage at the upcoming ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600, getting back to their roots and paying homage to an adoring home crowd. The boys took to the decks for the very first time on the Gold Coast, and consequently uncovered a talent that led them to their careers as professional, internationally renowned DJs. It is rare to make it in this business, let alone be at the top of your game (they have twice been voted the number one DJs in Australia), so what is it about Gold Coast brothers Matt and Chris Stafford that make them so successful?

In 2011, Fox 8 launched the Stafford Brothers reality show. Their mix of talent, youth and vibrancy appeared to be the perfect combination to appeal to audiences; it was the first TV show of its kind to follow the lives of DJs in an all access, exclusive way. The show kept audiences glued and highlighted the boys’ hectic lives travelling around the world to play at big name clubs, idyllic party destinations and iconic festivals. One thing was clear though; despite the entourage, the parties and the beautiful women, the Stafford Brothers’ passion for progressive dance music is driving them to be pioneers in their genre. It has been the sheer love of what they do that has catapulted them to the top. Charisma, crowd instinct and a sense of humour have simply brought their talents into the limelight.

The story really began when, as producers, they exploded onto the local circuit almost overnight with their first release ‘More than a Feeling’, a dance cover version of the classic Boston title. What followed was a string of original club records that landed them on major dance labels like Ministry of Sound, Cr2, Toolroom and Defected. Their big break as DJ performers came about when they were announced as the support act for English electronic dance music group The Prodigy on their Australian Stadium Tour. This instantly caught the attention of touring giants Future Entertainment, and the Stafford Brothers became the official host on the annual Future Music festival’s main stage, playing multiple sets between big name artists – a yearly tradition that they have kept up.

With set ups in New York, Las Vegas and Hollywood, the Stafford Brothers have adjusted to a more international crowd, and have remixed artists from Snoop Dogg, to Timbaland, Wolfgang Gartner and Akon. More recently, the brothers signed to Cash Money Records, joining a family of artists with the likes of Nicki Minaj, Drake and Lil Wayne. Their first single with Cash Money Records – Hello – features Lil Wayne and Christina Milian, and went Double Platinum in Australia. The single has also launched in the US and is gaining momentum.

The Stafford Brothers have invested interests that go well beyond DJ performance. They are shareholders in three popular nightclubs which showcase national and international artists each week, they co-own the premium artist touring and management outfit ‘360 Agency’ and have weekly slots on the highest syndicated chain of commercial radio networks. Season three of their TV show is currently in the works, being filmed on location in the US.

While still locals to the GC when they come home, the Stafford Brothers are a success story of the best kind – still going strong with plenty ahead of them, and flying the banner for Australian dance music on the global stage.

The Stafford Brothers are on the line up for Saturday’s concert at the V8 Supercars ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600. Get in fast to be one of the first 1,000 to receive free entry to the concert with your same-day ticket. Tickets on sale now from www.ticketek.com.

SAND, SUN AND FAMILY FUN

As a child growing up in a small coastal town in New South Wales, I would look forward to school holidays, when my parents would ship my sister and I off to stay with Nan and Pop on the Gold Coast for a week. Every single visit would always involve the exact same things: a swim at the beach followed by an icy pole; a day out at Sea World; a round of Putt Putt. Nan would even cook us the same meals every time we came to stay, and while I did eventually get sick of her Apricot Chicken, there was one thing I never tired of, and that was a trip to Grundy’s!

For those of you who aren’t all too familiar with the history of Surfers Paradise, Grundy’s was the bee’s knees of entertainment back in the day. This game arcade/amusement park hybrid featured

a range of games you could play in the hope of winning tokens, which you could then trade for prizes at the prize booth. Even Nan and Pop used to get in on the action, competing against each other in the water horse racing game and balloon darts.

Naturally, things have progressed a bit since then – Grundy’s is now Timezone and the games are a lot fancier. But the essence remains the same – Surfers Paradise is still THE place for family fun. With so much on offer, it would take weeks to experience all the fun activities available to you, so we’ve selected a few that we think will keep the whole family happy.

Children not only select a toy and outfit, but they can also stuff it to their personal level of cuddliness by choosing their ‘snuggability’ rating in store. Add to that a secret wish to give your special friend a heartbeat, and you’ve truly created a unique gift to celebrate your holiday. Register your new friend with a birth certificate, and pack them up in their cardboard house, and they’re ready to take home!

Build-a-Bear Workshop is open from 9am until 7pm Monday – Wednesday and from 9am until 9pm Thursday through to Sunday.

TIP: Extend the fun by giving the kids some crayons to decorate their cardboard houses with when you get home – another feature unique to your creation!

This world-renowned museum for the wild and wacky will amaze and enthral with its unique display of bizarre artefacts from around the globe.

From shrunken heads and dinosaur eggs, to replicas of the world’s tallest man, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium is just as educational as it is fun.

Take a self-guided tour through the myriad of themed galleries and explore hundreds of exhibits and interactive displays at your own pace – there’s even an unforgettable movie for your viewing pleasure!

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium is open 365 days a year from 9am until 11pm and is suitable for all ages.

TIP: If you’ve had enough sun for one day, this is a great place to stay cool without dampening the fun factor.

If a child were to dream up their perfect

holiday accommodation, we’re pretty sure

it would end up looking like Paradise Resort.

From outstanding onsite attractions, to

colourfully appointed guest rooms – think

brightly coloured kid's bunkhouses, complete

with gaming consoles in each bunk – every

inch of this resort has been designed with kids

in mind.

Set on five acres of prime real estate, Paradise

Resort is located within walking distance to

Surfers Paradise’s best beaches and attractions.

Occupying the central resort space is a gigantic

water park featuring a lagoon pool, large

heated spa and two very impressive aqua play

attractions, complete with a myriad of slides,

water cannons and climbing frames. Kids of all

ages will be delighted by the giant bucket-shaped

water feature; released every few minutes, the

supersized attraction gushes out 600 litres of

water in one big splash! Heated all year round,

the water park will thrill in any season.

But don’t think the resort is just for kids; there’s

also plenty of fun for parents, including an

adults-only gym and day spa, and an onsite play

service, Zone 4 Kids Club. This fully supervised

care program caters for babies through to 12 year

olds and provides parents with the opportunity

to get some quality holiday time for themselves.

Children will love the seven themed Z4K play

spaces such as Tiny Town, with pedal powered

cars and working traffic lights; Under Water

World, with submarines and slides; and the

Magic Garden with its colourful ball pit. They’ll

also enjoy the opportunity to make new friends

their own age.

For quality family time and some great

photo opportunities, head over to Dusty’s

Adventureland. This sandy outdoor play area,

protected from the sun with overhead shade

sails, is open from 9am until 6pm every day.

Young children will love the traditional outdoor

play equipment including slides, seesaws and

a jungle gym, as well as one-of-a-kind features

like the sand digger.

The ‘coolest’ attraction at Paradise Resort

though, is the newly opened Planet Chill. This

all-weather, indoor ice-skating rink is accessible

all year round and offers three two-hour sessions

per day for 3 – 12 year olds, with additional

sessions available for teens. There’s also a ‘Chill

Zone’ for teens with air hockey, foosball and

snowboarding game tables. The Chill Zone

regularly hosts themed party nights and other

activities for teenagers – check out the resort’s

events calendar before you go to see what’s on

during your stay.

Another outstanding feature of Paradise Resort is

that kids can eat at any of the resort’s restaurants

for just $8! Open for breakfast and dinner, Bistro

Zagame’s offers quality dining in a relaxed, casual

atmosphere. A continental buffet breakfast is

available from 7am until 10.30am daily, serving

up delicious and nutritious dishes such as fresh

fruit, yoghurt and cereals, as well as freshly baked

treats. At dinnertime, children will enjoy favourites

like pizza and burgers while parents can indulge

from a more grown up selection including crispy

skinned Atlantic salmon, Greek lamb salad or

Tuscan vegetable risotto. More dining options

are available at the Poolside Café & Bar, which is

open from early morning until late, for breakfast,

lunch and dinner.

With so many options to eat, stay and play,

children and adults alike will be truly impressed

with their holiday experience. It’s safe to say that

Paradise Resort is really living up to its mantra:

heaven for kids, paradise for parents …

FOOD & LIFESTYLE

Since its grand opening nearly two years

ago, Bazaar Restaurant at QT Gold Coast

has added a wow factor that is highly

sought after by both Gold Coast locals

and tourists. From the funky, fresh fit-out

to the ever-changing seasonal offerings and world-

class service, Bazaar has been a major player in

increasing the standard of dining in Surfers Paradise.

After a top to bottom refurbishment, the hotel

was reborn under the QT brand in 2010, complete

with a quirky new image, bright décor and a pop

art aesthetic. A throwback to the vibrancy of the

1950s and 60s but with a contemporary twist,

QT is reminiscent of the cool beachside feel of

Surfers Paradise of old.

At the heart of it all is Bazaar. Designed to reflect a

bustling marketplace, the restaurant's fare reaches

all four corners of the globe. Chefs at different

stations, designed to represent street stalls, are

on hand to explain their dishes; a lack of labelling

encouraging discussion between chef and guest.

Have a chat to them about the dishes on offer; from

the lavish cold seafood spread to authentic wood

fired pizzas and Asian dumplings steamed to order.

The dishes vary from day to day and according to

season, but on our most recent visit we sampled

melt-in-your-mouth roast pork with perfectly crispy

and crunchy crackling; fresh local prawns, scallops

and oysters; spicy buffalo chicken wings with blue

cheese sauce and the most amazing grilled corn on

the cob. Start small and try a bit of everything; we

recommend the cous cous salad, steamed prawn

dumplings, roast ham and a variety of desserts

including ice-cream ‘cold stone’ style.

Every element of Bazaar is designed with interaction

in mind. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer a view

inside the cool room, stocked full of premium meats

and aged hams. Delectable bite sized treats are lined

up perfectly in rows in the help yourself dessert

station. The restaurant takes the title “buffet” to

a whole new level. Sights such as this, as well as

ocean views, retro art wall hangings and the open

plan dining room give the impression that Bazaar

is as pleasing on the eyes as it is on the palate.

Upping QT’s cool quotient even further is the

hotel’s hip lounge bar, Stingray. Offering an

extensive drink list with signature cocktails, beer,

wine and champagne, there’s also a great selection

of bar food. The food menu is reminiscent of a

Mexican Cantina, with tantalising snacks such

as wood fired quesadillas stuffed with tequila

marinated king prawns, buttermilk onion rings

and braised wagyu brisket sliders.

Catering to everyone’s tastes, QT also makes for

a great family getaway that’s a little out of the

box. Children will love the bright and colourful

atmosphere and the interactive style of dining at

Bazaar. Hotel facilities including an outdoor pool

and spa, tennis court, as well as complimentary bike

hire and an in-room babysitting service that allows

Mum and Dad to escape to the onsite day spa, or

cosy up on Stingray Lounge’s balcony.

QT even offers a great-value family accommodation

package which includes admission to Dreamworld

– see the special offer on this page for details. For

package or any of the facilities or venues, mentioned

The Gold Coast has long been considered Australia’s answer to the spanning Californian coastlines; with plenty of glitz and glamour, it has maintained a

reputation as one of the most dazzling coastal locations in the country.

TABLE SERVICE

The recent redevelopment of some of Surfers Paradise’s best-known hot spots is helping to reinforce this title, ensuring that Surfers Paradise takes its place alongside some of the best holiday

destinations in the world.

In recent years, the Surfers Paradise Foreshore and Cavill Mall have been completely overhauled, befitting the coastal destination’s international reputation as one of Australia’s best tourist attractions. The upscale redevelopment of Surfers Paradise brings with it a host of contemporary dining experiences, delivering some of the most remarkable cuisine on the Gold Coast.

FOUR WINDS If you’re looking for a dining experience with a

twist, take a seat at Queensland’s only revolving

restaurant. Situated on the top level of the Crowne

Plaza Hotel, Four Winds commands views over the

Pacific Ocean, Hinterland and Gold Coast city. Here

you can experience sunset or candlelight dining

amidst ever-changing views.

The restaurant more than surpasses its buffet title,

with an eclectic mix of international, Asian and

Modern Australian flavours combining perfectly

with a range of locally sourced produce. You

can enjoy everything from Middle Eastern style

sirloin steak medallions to perfectly cooked lamb

cutlets with a mustard and walnut crust, or fresh

Atlantic salmon in sorrel sauce, prepared under

the watchful eye of Head Chef Fong Chan.

An exclusive Asian selection features stir-fried pork

belly in a red curry sauce, while the cold selection

gives you the opportunity to indulge in an array

of fresh seafood. Of course, the dessert menu is a

sweet tooth’s dream, full of decadent, traditional

favourites. Save room for the strawberry mousse

cake, crème caramel and warm sticky date

pudding. Enjoy 360-degree views of the Gold

Coast, all while being spoilt for choice.

SALT GRILL Celebrity chef Luke Mangan brings his

creativity and expertise to Hilton Surfers

Paradise, with Salt Grill. Salt Grill’s 157-seat

dining room features large circular windows

overlooking Orchid Avenue, and the action

that goes hand in hand with an open kitchen.

Depart from the traditional a la carte menu,

and enjoy a seven-course degustation menu

featuring matching wines from their acclaimed,

hand-selected wine cellar. The degustation

menu gives you the best of Salt Grill and takes

you on a journey of Modern Australian cuisine

with bursts of Pacific Rim flavours. The seared

scallop, shitake sausage and tamarind dish is

divine in its simplicity, while the Riverina lamb

cutlet, garlic cream and mixed mushrooms

tops off five courses and prepares you for two

rounds of dessert.

You can always enjoy part of the menu that makes

up Salt Grill’s namesake and opt for a choice

of seafood or meat ‘from the grill’. Everything

off the grill comes with an indulgent selection

of sauces - choose your own combination. We

couldn’t go past the barbeque spiced chicken

and smoky barbeque sauce served with crisp

green beans. Perfect!

SEADUCTION Seaduction is located within Sea Temple resort

at the Soul development, perfectly positioned

on the Surfers Paradise beachfront. The location

epitomises what the Gold Coast has to offer;

breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean coupled

with a truly opulent dining experience. The

contemporary, lavish interior complements the

modern menu, which is inspired by local and

seasonal produce. Executive Chef Steve Szabo

flawlessly combines old world culinary techniques

with simplistic, delicious flavours that embody

Modern Australian cuisine.

Seaduction’s signature entrée dish is a must: butter

poached crayfish and marinated tuna, on a bed

of quinoa and sunflower seeds with an almond

gazpacho. It is the type of entrée that will awaken

your senses and give you a glimpse of the careful

preparation of each dish, all of which balance

texture and taste with a high level of culinary

artistry. For a vegetarian option, the handmade

goat’s cheese tortellini with beetroot gel and

crushed walnuts in mandarin and burnt butter

is the perfect example of a classic combination

with a twist.

The main courses on Seaduction’s menu exemplify

the head chef’s technical skills. The understated

rainbow trout sandwich is accompanied with

celeriac remouladé, fennel cream and watermelon

bubbles, a delicious foam that perfectly

complements the smooth texture of the trout. If

seafood isn’t to your fancy, try the sous vide duck

breast, served with a fruited sweet potato, lime

confit and a coffee foam that works beautifully

with the rest of the dish.

Seaduction boasts its own wine-tasting room,

private dining room and stylish bar. The food is

divine, the wine list is impressive and the location

is spectacular.

Ask locals in the know and they might

be reluctant to tell you about the

hidden gem that is Budds Beach, for

fear of having to share one of the

most serene waterways on the Gold

Coast. But the team at Precinct is here to tell you

about this ideal family-friendly spot where the

beach meets the river.

Located just off the Gold Coast Highway, Budds

Beach overlooks Chevron Island to the west

and Surfers Paradise to the east. This small

neighbourhood spans just a few blocks, but is

secluded from the hustle and bustle of central

Surfers Paradise, providing a wonderfully relaxing

and tranquil atmosphere that both couples and

families will enjoy.

Along the water’s edge is a partially fenced

children’s playground. Set up your picnic lunch on

the table nearby and then watch the kids enjoy the

play equipment while you soak up the sunshine!

You can even try your luck and drop a line in the

water, where whiting and flathead often bite. A

modern jetty provides plenty of room for you to

sit back and wait for your bounty.

If you’re in the mood for a fabulous gourmet meal,

just across the road is one of the Gold Coast’s best

cafés. Famed for its mouth-watering breakfasts,

superb coffee and quaint shabby chic interior,

Bumbles Café is a Gold Coast institution. Head

to the library room at the back of the café, where

you can indulge in a lazy lunch over a selection of

books, or take your order outside and enjoy your

pick by the river.

Located right next door is Suga Suga, a charming

little homewares and gift store, jam packed with

delightful treasures. Inspired by the coastal vibe

of New Guinea, the Bahamas and of course, the

Gold Coast, Suga Suga is always immaculately

merchandised and is without a doubt one of the

most unique stores on the Coast!

If you prefer to get your toes wet after lunch,

Budds Beach provides plenty of opportunities

for family fun in calm waters. Wade in the water’s

edge, or if you’re up for something a little more

adventurous, try a spot of paddle boarding or

even a jet pack adventure. The latest craze to hit

the water, jet pack adventures involve strapping

a water powered jet pack to your back, propelling

you into the air and hovering above the water,

Jetsons style!

If you need to freshen up after your aquatic

adventures, there are public facilities including

toilets, showers and taps in Budds Beach park.

For some, holidays are all about relaxation;

some time by the pool, a nice bottle

of wine and a fabulous meal combine

to create a level of sophistication on

a holiday escape. Enter the latest in a

range of holiday trends: the Girl’s Weekend Away.

When it comes to the ultimate in lavish, girly

pampering, what better than an indulgent high tea

and a day at the spa with your closest girlfriends?

L’Aqua Day Spa at Watermark Hotel and Spa are now

offering just that, having created a range of luxurious

packages combining spa therapies with tasty treats.

Available to groups of four or more, these packages

make a great way to celebrate special occasions

such as hen’s parties, bridal or baby showers,

birthdays and more. Starting at $135 per person,

the High Tea and Spa Delight package consists

of either a facial therapy, relaxation massage,

foot therapy or body polish, followed by a high

tea service. If you’re really feeling indulgent, you

can even choose to upgrade to a Lindt chocolate

high tea for an extra $5 per person.

The Girls Pamper Package, priced from $125 per

person, offers a choice of Swedish massage, facial,

deluxe vanilla bean sugar scrub or foot therapy.

After your treatment, you can refuel with lunch

and a beverage from the mouthwatering Spa

Cuisine menu. From a light and refreshing apple

and cucumber Waldorf salad, to something a

little more filling, like the scotch fillet steak served

with truffle scented fries, there are plenty of tasty

options. It’s recommended that you select your

meal when booking your package.

For the ultimate in weekend escapes, choose

the Lux Girls Getaway. Representing excellent

value from just $209 per person, the Lux Girls

Getaway gives you one night in a deluxe room

at the Watermark Hotel & Day Spa with pillow

menu, slippers and bathrobe. You’ll also receive a

luxurious 50-minute spa treatment and either high

tea or lunch in the exclusive W Lounge.

Our pick of spa treatments is definitely the signature

hot stone massage. A combination of hot and cold

stones mixed with a relaxing massage re-energises

the mind, body and soul, and leaves you feeling

completely rejuvenated. The L’Aqua signature facial

is also a delight, combining an introductory hot

stone massage with a customised facial, specific

to your skin type. You’ll even get a bonus foot

exfoliation and massage, as well as a mineral make

up application to finish off your treatment.

If your skin is in need of some TLC, we recommend

opting for the lemongrass infused salt body scrub.

Harvesting the benefits of natural botanical

extracts and the cleansing properties of marine

sea salts, the rich citrusy aroma of lemongrass will

transport you to an exotic world as you relax. The

salt scrub purifies your skin’s surface, revealing

the softest, smoothest, silkiest skin imaginable.

available as part of L’Aqua’s group packages,

everyone is bound to leave feeling like a brand
