Feasibility of concentrated solar power under Egyptian conditions

Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Market Competence Index, CSP, Egyptian Conditions

Summary:

Population growth and economic development are leading to a continuous increase in energy

demand in Egypt. At the same time conventional energy sources are diminishing amid growing

global concern for the environment. These factors underline the importance of increasing the use of

Renewable Energy sources. Egypt has enormous potential in Solar energy. There is sufficient proof

of Egypt’s potential for extracting energy from Concentrated Solar Power, especially power on

demand generation. CSP represents a reliable and sustainable source of energy for Egypt with

different outputs that can be used. In order to exploit it, the private sector needs to be involved.

This thesis studies the feasibility of CSP in Egypt from regulatory and institutional conditions to

technological characteristics and economic competitiveness under Egyptian conditions.

An assessment for technical, economic, and environmental challenges

facing renewable energy strategy in Egypt

Key Words:

Assessment, Technical, Economic, Environmental Challenges, Renewable Energy, Strategy, Egypt.

Summary: Securing energy demand for next generations is one of the most challenges aspects facing any sustained

development plans, due to the growing electric energy demand and Egypt as a country of limited fossil

fuel resources has to diversify its energy portfolio by utilization of its renewable energy resources,

mainly wind due to its economic potential and solar as proved by Egypt's wind and solar atlases. In the

year 2009/2010 the total installed capacity in Egypt was 24726 MW with electricity generation 139,000

GWh, of which 89% was delivered by thermal plants and about 10% from Hydro power with total

installed 2800 MW and electricity generated is about 12863 GWh and 1% from Wind energy with total

installed 550 MW and electricity generated 1542 GWh. In the solar energy field, the first solar thermal

power plant of 140 MW with a solar share of 20 MW using parabolic trough technology with estimated

total energy generated of 852GWh/year.

Recently, Egypt has adopted an ambitious plan to cover 20% of the generated electricity by renewable

energy by 2020, including a 12% contribution from wind energy, translating more than 7200 MW grid-

connected wind farms. Such plan gives a room enough to the private investment to play the major role

in realizing this goal.

Due to the high investment cost of solar energy technologies, still limited in spread all over the world

on the other hand wind energy has an economic potential and becomes a commercial technology but the

future potential for solar energy due to the limited land for wind energy.

The current study evaluate the Egyptian strategy for renewable energy up to 2020 and find how much

the planned projects from the Egyptian government will fulfill its target, the economic study and the

expected investment cost of these projects, and the environmental impacts of the renewable energy.

Analytical and comparative study for solar thermal cooling and

photovoltaic solar cooling in the MENA region

Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Solar Thermal Cooling, Photovoltaic Solar Cooling, MENA Region

Summary:

In this thesis, a comparison and analyses of solar thermal and solar photovoltaic (PV) air-

conditioning technologies for a Typical Single Family House (TSFH) in two different MENA

climates, Aswan-Egypt and Aqaba-Jordan, are performed, Three scenarios are designed in order to

compensate the TSFH’s annual cooling demand in each selected climate. These scenarios are solar

thermal air-conditioning with storage (absorption chiller), PV air-conditioning without storage and

PV air-conditioning with storage.. The PV air-conditioning scenario with storage behaves and

compensates the cooling demand better than the solar thermal air-conditioning with storage

scenario and needs less storage to cover the same amount of cooling load demand. However, the

storage system in the PV air-conditioning scenario is minor and the direct compensation is major..

The potential of Fresnel reflectors for process heat generation in the

MENA region

Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Fresnel Reflectors, Process Heat Generation, MENA

Summary:

This study assesses the potential of generating solar heat for industrial processes with linear Fresnel

collectors in the Middle East and North Africa to be around 460 TWh. Based on a comprehensive

top-down approach Morocco and Tunisia are identified as most promising. Within the bottom-up

approach 10 companies in Morocco and 7 companies in Tunisia were visited and their potential

assessed in more detail. Moreover, the most promising industries were examined on potential

benefits and challenges. Furthermore, the major legislations and institutions of the countries are

included in the assessment. A single variable sensitivity analysis examines the factors which

influence the internal rate of return and thermal energy costs of solar process heat systems. A

reference scenario shows that currently solar process heat systems with linear Fresnel collectors are

not feasible in Morocco or Tunisia. An institutional comparison identifies most suitable support

schemes for solar process heat systems. Based on the results the study provides recommendations

for policy makers and the private sector.

The Moroccan solar plan - a comparative analysis of CSP and PV

utilization until 2020

Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Moroccan Solar Plan, CSP, PV

Summary:

The present master thesis provides a database of performance indicators such as energy yields,

capacity factors, typical efficiencies and losses of technical components, LCOE, and difference

costs (DC: LCOE minus avoided costs of the conventional power system) for fixed tilted, 1-axis

horizontal, 1-axis vertical and 2-axis tracking PV and CSP with no, 6, 12 and 18 full load hours of

thermal storage. HelioClim irradiation data of 2005 for the sites in Ouarzazate, Ain Ben Mathar,

Boujdour, Laayoune and Tarfaya is used ranging between 1,927 - 2,428 kWh/m2/y (DNI) and

1,968 - 2,154 kWh/m2/y (GHI).

An extensive sensitivity analysis for WACC and price escalation of conventional energy shows that

for only PV and only CSP scenarios in 55 and 22 out of 72 cases the DC are negative - although no

environmental costs for conventional generation are internalized. The weighted average extra costs

of a feed-in tariff for the analyzed scenarios range between 0.4% - 8.1% of today´s electricity price

until break-even with conventional energy.

analysis and a case study on Morocco Key Words:

Renewable Energy, PV, Wind, Germany, Morocco

Summary:

This MATLAB-based technical study analyzes the potential of a systematic-optimized placement

of wind turbines and Photovoltaic panels (PV) to minimize the requirements for the energy supply

structure by reducing the residual load in Germany. A simpler case study is also presented for

Morocco. This study seeks to analyze the installed capacity required to ensure that PV panels and

wind turbines contribute to reduce significantly the residual load in Germany based on the

allocation methods used in this study. In addition, Germany was divided into six regions to see the

impacts of optimizing the installation of PV and wind capacity in small regions to the whole

system, allowing us to take into consideration transport and storage capacity requirements needed

to consistently fulfill the maximum load demand. These results for storage capacity requirements

and transport were compared to two scenarios: Germany as one region scenario and another

reference scenario, and results showed that maximum transport capacity needed is 27% and 12%

less than the two scenarios respectively and capacity storage requirements are 13% and 2% less

respectively. The case study on Morocco provides a theoretical estimation of the installed PV and

wind capacity required to fully cover the yearly energy consumption and was found to be 19,520

MW and 12,250 MW for PV and wind respectively.

Dynamic simulation of a PV-diesel-battery hybrid plant for off grid

electricity supply. Key Words:

Renewable Energy, PV, Diesel, Hybrid Plant, Off Grid Electricity

Summary:

This thesis analyzes different control strategies to improve the operation of stand-alone PV-diesel

generator-battery plants, and to reduce the operation cost accordingly. Therefore, four control

strategies are proposed according to primary and secondary control of frequency. Each control

strategy provides different loading patterns of the diesel generators and the storage system.

Dynamic simulations of the plant operation are performed according to each control strategy. The

simulation results show that the control strategy, which covers the power fluctuations mainly from

the battery system, demonstrates more constant output power of diesel generators, lower frequency

deviations, less fuel consumption, better performance of the diesel generators and less cost of

energy, but less expected lifetime of the batteries compared to the other analyzed control strategies.

On the other hand, the control strategy, which covers the power fluctuations from the diesel

generators and the battery system in parallel, demonstrates higher variation in output power of the

diesel generators, higher frequency deviations, higher fuel consumption, less favorable

performance of the diesel generators and higher cost of energy, but higher expected lifetime of the

battery compared to the other analyzed control strategies.

Energy efficient management and optimization strategies in office

buildings by implementing simulation-based optimization control

Key Words:

Energy Efficiency, Office Buildings, Simulation-Based Optimization

Summary:

This research presents a framework for using simulation-based optimization control approach in

reducing primary energy consumption from a HVAC system in a Bosch office building in

Schwieberdingen near Stuttgart, Germany. Two systems supplying heating energy to the building

are investigated; the installed ventilation system and the static irradiative heating system. A

building model is created using TRNSYS and calibrated to meet a satisfying agreement with the

real building behavior. This model is used for fault detection and new control configuration

investigations. However, the control parameters that influence the primary energy consumption are

identified using a sensitivity analysis. Accordingly, it is found that the supply air temperature, the

air volume flow rate, and energy required to heat coils are the main parameters that should be

controlled to reduce the primary energy consumption. Two optimization control approaches were

conducted in this research. The 1st optimization method is applied using TRNSYS (a forward

model) whereas the 2nd

optimization method is applied using linear optimization with LINPROG

algorithm in MATLAB (a data-driven model). The results show that 24% of primary energy

savings is achieved by using appropriate control strategy.

Potential of local manufacturing for wind and CSP components in

Egypt.

Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Local Manufacturing, Wind, CSP, Egypt

Summary:

This work reflects the current Egyptian energy market situation and focuses on assessing the

existing possibilities regarding local manufacturing potential for wind and CSP technologies.

Combined with conducted interviews this thesis presents the status quo and possible outlook of the

renewable energy industry in Egypt. Based on conducted interviews in addition to a workshop, this

thesis evaluates the future possible local share of component manufacturing for wind and CSP

technologies and analyzes different scenarios regarding the deployment of these two technologies.

This analysis produced a number of key findings; the survey shows that the technical potential for

domestic production for the two technologies is promising. However, the uncertainty of a long term

renewable energy strategy for the country and the highly subsidized fossil fuels combined with a

lack of communication between the key players present a significant obstacle for a growing

renewable energy market. A multi-pronged approach is essential to overcome the barriers and to

accelerate the development of the local manufacturing industry for wind and CSP technologies.

This approach considers political, regulatory, technical as well as financial measures. The main

outcome of the scenario analysis shows that a combined CSP and wind energy scenario can lead to

an improved renewable energy market development and extensive local manufacturing possibilities

which can benefit Egypt in a socio-economically, economically and ecologically. This combined

approach has a more positive effect on the country than a strongly wind energy biased path.

Modeling and performance analysis of a hybrid biogas-photovoltaic

system

Key Words:

Renewable Energy, hybrid, biogas, photovoltaic, Eichhof center, Germany, Jordan

Summary:

The integration of PV and biogas with a focus on biogas as a flexible electricity supplier is

thoroughly investigated in this thesis. The performance of the biogas/PV hybrid system at Eichhof

agricultural center in Germany is evaluated. The complete electrical and thermal energy system is

analyzed and modeled using Simulink. A proposed future scenario for a more sustainable, reliable

and autonomous system is developed. Finally, a case study to determine the feasibility of this type

of hybrid systems on a dairy farm in Jordan is carried on.

Finally, it was concluded that in order to ensure the feasibility of a similar hybrid system in Jordan

the tariff at which the produced electricity is sold to the utility grid should be more than 0.02

JD/kWh (0.021 €/kWh) for a large size project (1.65 MW installed capacity) and more than 0.03

JD/kWh (0.032 €/kWh) for the smaller project (0.22 MW installed capacity). The large scale

system proved to be generally more feasible and had a levelized cost of electricity of 0.136 JD/kWh

(0.146 €/kWh). The project has a total investment of 5.4 million JD (5.78 million €).

Design, simulation, and emulation of a residential load management

region

Key Words:

Energy Efficiency, Residential Load Management, Smart Grid, MENA

Summary:

Demand side management strategies have been used by the industry for many years for managing

mainly large and predictable loads. Supply constraints – caused principally by capital intensive

costs and geopolitical challenges of building new generation capacities – are convincing utilities to

take a new look at the hefty role demand side management can play in controlling the consumption

of smaller commercial and residential customers

The objective of this thesis is to shed light on the current electric energy situation and practiced

demand side management activities in countries of the MENA Region. It also aims at

recommending suitable communication and control technologies for a proposed regional smart grid

environment. In addition, in this thesis we develop a load management algorithm which reduces

peak electricity consumption in residential units and manages the operation of household

appliances according to utility controls and consumers preferences; thus creating efficient resources

allocation at consumer premises and consequently improving the load factor of associated

generation capacities. Furthermore, we propose some modifications to existing electricity billing

schemes to promote more rational electricity consumption patterns.

Performance simulation for parabolic trough concentrating solar

power plants and export scenario analysis for north Africa Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Parabolic Trough Concentrating, North Africa

Summary:

The thesis is providing a model witch can calculate the electrical output of CSP parabolic trough

plants for several locations in North Africa. Furthermore it is analyzed how these CSP plants can

contribute to a 100% renewable energy supply in Germany for the year 2050. Therefore the first

part of this thesis presents a model estimating suitable locations for CSP plants in North Africa and

calculating the electrical output of CSP plants. Several criteria’s for land use, annual irradiation and

infrastructure, are processed, and rules for depositing CSP plants were specified. In alliance with

weather prediction models an energy-balanced CSP model simulates the electrical output of

exclusive solar driven CSP parabolic trough plants. By using different configurations the

simulation can display various forms of storage sizes and different cooling system.

Therefore, the effective load carrying capacity (ELCC) and the capacity credit (CC) for a number

of CSP plants in relation to the residual load in Germany is evaluated. The focus is on the influence

different storage sizes have on the possibility to supply energy on demand for Germany. The work

shows that even a high capacity credit of around 53% for solar multiple four CSP plants is not

necessarily helpful to reduce significant the high demand in Germany during winter times.

Analysis and evaluation tools development of photovoltaic modules and

system performance under Jordanian and German climatic conditions

Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Photovoltaic, System Performance, Jordanian, German

Summary:

The aim is to develop an evaluation tool for analyzing the performance of the different photovoltaic

technologies. This thesis was performed for two sites, Kassel in Germany and Ma’an in Jordan.

For the Kassel site, a comparison between two different irradiation measurement sensors

(Pyranometer and ISET sensor) was performed, then an estimation of electrical and thermal

characteristics for the two photovoltaic technologies (polycrystalline Silicon and micromorphous

silicon μ-Si) has been investigated by the simulation model. Moreover, the outputs of the simulation

were evaluated by using a real measured data for the module and system level. The evaluation of

the output power for the module and system levels show less deviation by using ISET senor as the

base of irradiation measurement, while it was deviated more when measuring the irradiation via

pyranometer. Therefore ISET sensor was more accurate than pyranometer for irradiation

measurement. For the Ma’an site, estimation of electrical and thermal characteristics for the two

photovoltaic technologies (polycrystalline Silicon and Cadmium Telluride CdTe) has been

determined by the simulation model. The estimated output power shows that the highest energy

yield was occurred at the optimum tilt angle (32o). Generally, in the both sites the results show that,

thin film technology achieves a higher specific energy yield than polycrystalline technology.

Renewable Energy, Wind Farm, Jordan

Summary:

Five sites were selected in different regions of Jordan (north-Hofa, north-Ibrahimya, middle-Tafila,

middle-Fujaij, and south-Aqaba). Measurements by the National Energy Research Centre (NERC)

where collected for many years, these measurements were evaluated in order to have an overview

about the potential of wind resources in Jordan and to compare the different potentials for these

sites. Those measurements were raw data of the average wind speed and wind direction

. A wind farm was designed in each of the selected site by using the Wind PRO software and then

technical and financial assessments were carried out. Those assessments have proved that the wind

energy project can be a successfully project in Jordan and they are very attractive to investors. The

Aqaba wind farm has shown that it is the best when compared with the other selected sites while

the Tafila wind farm is in second place. Those two sites are likely the most promising sites to

continue achieving the target of supplying Jordan with cheap and reliable energy. Also, they

compensate each other depending on the season. Moreover, the two scenarios are suggested to

achieve the Jordanian target 1000MW of wind energy by 2020 according to this thesis’ results.

Technical and economic performance of parabolic trough in Jordan

Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Parabolic Trough, Jordan

Summary:

The aim of this study was to investigate the technical and economic aspects of parabolic trough

performance in Jordan. The technical aspect was addressed by developing an empirical

mathematical model for the performance of a parabolic trough demonstration plant installed in the

Dead Sea area.

Photogremmetric test was conduct on the parabolic trough collector to determine the optical

quality. The total optical error was evaluated to be 20.6 mrad which resulted in an intercept factor

at normal incidence of 0.72. The empirical parameters of the overall performance model were

determined by applying the multiple linear regression (MLR) tool on a series of measurements for

the system performance. The developed model suggests that the optical losses in the system are

much higher than thermal. Where at normal incidence (peak optical efficiency) and a mean heat

transfer temperature of 80oC, the system losses were modeled to be 47% optical and 11% thermal.

The LCOE for the proposed parabolic trough plant in Ma’an was estimated to be 20.96 ¢/kWh for a

base-case scenario and 17.89 ¢/kWh for an incentive scenario (tax exemptions) which is still high

compared to the current cost of electricity using fossil fuel in Jordan (9.64 ¢/kWh). Sensitivity

analysis revealed that th

solar thermal power plant with a dry cooled system, and 7.5 full load storage hours in

Ma’an/Jordan, a comparison between Dry and Wet cooled plants from a technical and economical

point of view is done, also an assessment of dry cooled plant in this site.

Simulation tool (Greenius) which is developed by DLR is used to simulate the parabolic trough

plant and also for optimization, based on Site measured data from enerMENA station, design

parameters that are similar to Andasol are used in the comparison with Ma’an site for both cooling

options, after finishing the comparison, the design for both the wet and dry cooled plants is

optimized for better assessment in Ma’an.

Different suggested financial scenarios have been simulated to make the project feasible. A

minimum required tariff 0.17€/kWhe, or a grant of 163.3 million €, or (0.146€/kWhe with 50

million €), or (0.13€/kWhe with 100 million €).

Design and characterization of a small wind turbine model equipped

with a pitching system

Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Small Wind Turbine, Pitching System

Summary:

A small pitch-controlled wind turbine with a 0.58 m rotor diameter has been designed, constructed

and tested in the wind tunnel. The blade is a prototype of a larger blade that has been constructed in

an earlier project. This thesis dissertation covers two main tasks. First, careful characterization of

the small wind turbine is carried out at different wind velocities and pitch setting angles. Second, a

pitch control system is implemented to control the power output of the turbine at wind speeds

above the rated speed. Two control strategies have been adopted for this model; load control below

the rated wind speed, and pitch to feather control above the rated wind speed.

A novel lead screw mechanism is implemented for controlling the pitch angle by a stepper motor.

This proved to be efficient and convenient for small wind turbines and worked perfectly. All

measurements and control actions were achieved by utilizing a National Instruments data

acquisition cards and a custom developed LabVIEW program. The wind tunnel measurements of

the wind turbine characteristics were not as expected. The wind turbine maximum power

coefficient was of the order of 0.02 and optimum tip speed ratio was around 3.2 at the rated wind

speed of 9 m/s.

Design and power characterization of a small wind turbine model in

partial load region Key Words:

Renewable Energy, Small Wind Turbine

Summary:

In this thesis a small wind turbine model was constructed with variable speed and pitch control in

order to investigate the effect of this control strategy on wind turbines by characterizing its design

and output power.

The small wind turbine model components were mentioned with specifications and functions in

addition to description of the Lab View program.

The model was experimented in the wind tunnel exists in Oldenburg University where a testing

procedure was followed. The procedure included the way how to measure the output voltages and

currents from the generator at different wind speeds and how wiring should be connected.

This fruitful work resulted in drawing the power and c– λ curves. Discussions of the obtained

results were made and several factors were listed. These factors, such as friction, affected the

model’s performance. These discoveries helped in proposing useful modifications for the system in

order to enhance it.

Renewable Energy, Market Competence Index, CSP

Summary:

A quantitative, objective, and analytically index that describes the competence of renewable energy

market of world countries is derived. The proposed index, Renewable Energy Market Competence

Index, is composed of 13 general indicators and 5 technology dependent indicators. The index

structure allows including more indicators for more accurate representation of the relative

competence among the countries. Though the index calculation depends on weighted average

between the average of the 13 general indicators and the average of 3 of the technology dependent

indicators, applying the index on Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology for 18 countries

shows very minor change of the index results (score and rank) with the change of the weighting

parameter. This is due to the high correlation of the general indicators and the three technology

indicators values, suggesting that even a simpler version of the index that is composed only of 5

technology indicators is sufficient to give a very good measure of the relative competence among

the countries.

A comparison of the proposed index with CSP Countries Attractiveness Index, that is developed by

Ernst & Young Inc., shows a very good matching (correlation >85%) between both score and rank

of the two indices for the 11 common countries. Despite of the relatively large difference in score

between the two indices (17 to 22 points) for 3 countries (South Africa, Greece, and Tunisia), the

difference in the remaining 8 countries does not exceed 7 points.

Summary:

The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants as well as security of supply is

considered as the main driving forces for the transformation of current power supply systems to

modern systems based on Renewable Energy Technologies. The MENA region, compared to other

regions in the world, is a unique place for harnessing renewable energies. The world’s highest

potential of renewable power generation is located in the MENA region, as 45 % of the world’s

potential for solar energy is concentrated there. It has also a strong potential of wind energy.

Taking the approach of “let the weather decide” into account, which means that the fluctuated

weather-driven renewable energies are combined according to the weather circumstances, this

study aims to find the optimal mix of renewable power generation in Morocco for three different

scenarios by 2020

Summary:

In this research, a decision support tool has been developed in Matlab to help the facility managers

to decide which sizes of PV system, electrical and thermal energy storage they need to install in

order to achieve the optimum self-consumption, technically as well as economically.

The American University of Cairo “AUC” has been chosen as a case study for this research. Hourly

load estimation of electrical and thermal loads has been simulated under the weather conditions of

Cairo.

Increasing the PV system, increases the self-consumption of the facility and decreases the net

present value and the return on investment at low electricity prices and no feed in tariff. Increasing

the feed in tariff values leads for increasing the net present value and return on investment. On the

other hand, it has been noticed that, using batteries as a storage system is economically infeasible

when there is feed in tariff.

Summary:

Rising energy prices, declining availability of primary energy, increased environmental impact and

commitment to the sustainable development for future generations are now a days the prime

movers for the governments around the world to have the best possible energy efficient

technologies employed in their countries in order to meet global environmental standards and

requirements which seem to be becoming strict more and more.

In the field of commercial vehicles, the conventional internal combustion engine due to its

performance and weight cannot be replaced in the near future by the hybrid technology. However,

there is a potential for reducing fuel consumption through a new software is being developed that

controls the alternator to improve the energy conversion efficiency. This software called

“Alternator Management System (AMS)” was tested in the federal Republic of Germany and the

Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan by carrying out representative test drives. The results shows that

having the AMS installed in a vehicle could reduce the fuel consumption in the range between 0.29

and up to 0.72 % of the overall engine consumption. In addition, it is possible to reach a CO2

saving of 900 kg CO2 per year per truck. The best results could be obtained in the city application.

Nevertheless, results comparison proves the possibility of applying the new system in different

market other than Germany.

Summary:

This master thesis describes the design and cost analysis of very large scale photovoltaic power

plant. As it discuss the prices for the PV power plant components from different manufacturers.

Cost analysis was done after studying the different options available, to obtain the optimum size at

minimum specific cost.

Several studies were done for the different sub units with capacities (0.5 MW to 6 MW with 0.5

MW step), and different voltage levels (10 kV, 20 kV, and 30 kV). The types of cables (Aluminum

and Copper) were considered in each study. After the analysis of each price for each sub unit it was

concluded that, the lower specific cost was for 2.5 MW sub unit’s capacity, and that was in the case

of 250 MW power plant. And it was found that, the specific cost of the 800 MW power plant with

2.5 MW sub units is cheaper than the 250 MW power plant.

Summary:

Studies show that the electricity demand in the MEAN region is significantly increasing therefore

the interest in renewable energy is growing very fast. Renewable energy is the future of MENA

region because it has a great potential, especially wind energy. Though wind energy has great

advantages, it has also some disadvantages. These disadvantages can be avoided by using offshore

wind energy. The most important part in offshore wind turbine structure is the foundation as it is

constructed in water. The present master thesis focuses in finite element modeling and analysis of

(grouted connection). A calibration of the material used in the simulation has been carried out

assuring an accurate model of the used material by ATENA program. The research is concluded

with a result that the calibration showing a good agreement between the ATENA program material

behaviors and the experimental results. After the calibration has been done, the modeling of the

typical grouted connection with shear keys is analyzed by finite element analysis program (ATENA

program). The stresses were studied in short and long struts for the model with shear keys.

Comparisons were also made without the use of shear keys to better understand the effectiveness of

the shear keys. The results show that the model will be not fail under the case loading. Although

the shear keys can deteriorate and become weak due to the stress concentrations around the shear

keys, it is recommended to use shear keys because it help to distribute the stresses along the grout

section

Summary:

An off grid solar PV-driven system for precooling and storing post-harvest crops is proposed for

desert agricultural areas in Egypt. For operation during night as well as days with low solar

radiation, both thermal and electrical energy storage is considered. Previously existing parametric

MS Excel-based models are further developed and integrated into a new model to simulate the

system hourly operation throughout the year. The weather data, cold store construction, stored

crops properties, and a crops loading/unloading scenario are inputted to the developed model. The

cooling load time series is accordingly calculated. Based on the parameters of the inputted system

components the operation is simulated and the technical feasibility is assessed. As an example, a

case is considered where a 20ft-reefer container is used as cold store and tomatoes are loaded and

unloaded in a certain scenario. The model compares different alternatives resulting from trades of

components sizing. The most economical alternative is compared to a conventional diesel-powered

reference system with different scenarios of gradual removal of subsidy of diesel in Egypt.

exhausted. Microalgae have a good potential as biomass resource and using the flue gases for its

production enhance its growth rate and can reduce its production cost.

Energy management modeling and control of HVAC system in smart

grid environment

Key Words:

Energy, Control, MPC, Power HVAC

Summary:

Model Predictive Control (MPC) is used to minimize the energy consumption of the HVAC system

under the consideration of different inputs such as the outside temperature, the solar radiation,

occupancy, energy price and the peak load, while these parameters are not taken into account by

conventional control algorithms. Then comparing MPC with conventional HVAC control

algorithms (two position(2P) and Proportional plus Integral (PI) Controls,)

MPC can save around 20% and 8% compared to the 2P and PI Control algorithms,

respectively. Also the MPC reduces the peak load dramatically compared to PI and 2P controllers,

the MPC reduces the peak by 33% and17% compared to the 2P and PI Control algorithms,

respectively.

Summary:

Using latent heat storage, for an off-grid PV driven cooling system (container) in Egypt. The study

includes a simulating parametric tool. The parametric tool accepts all the defined engineering

factors to compute the output, that is the cooling load coverage generated from the PV system.

According to the selection criteria set at Fraunhofer institute, a system is been recommended. The

proposed system is assessed against the available system using diesel generators taking into

consideration the government gradual removal for 5, and 10 years plans.

Development and design of a form-adaptive trailing-edge for wind

turbine blades

Key Words:

Form-Adaptive Wind Turbine Blades, Flexible Trailing-Edge, Active Flow Control

Summary:

The objective of this project is to overcome the drawbacks of current pitch control mechanisms by

design an airfoil with the variable geometry at trailing edge. The deflection of designed airfoil is

investigated and then modeled by MATLAB codes. The aerodynamic results of the concept are

analyzed with XFOIL program as the results of project and are compared with conventional

pitchable airfoils. The flow control mechanism thus could provide the significant load reduction

during high wind speeds and provide the possibility of more power production. Moreover it leads

to less maintenance costs and the greater life span for next generation of huge wind turbines.

Evaluation of wind farm effects on fatigue loads of single wind turbines

towards its use in O&M systems – using data from the offshore wind

farm ENBW Baltic 1

Key Words:

Wind Energy, Fatigue Loads, Wake Effects, Wind Turbine Lifetime

Summary:

This thesis analyzed the wind farm effects reflected on fatigue loads in single turbines in an

offshore wind farm. The study provides strong evidence that considerable wake effects up to 15

rotor diameters downstream are increasing the fatigue loads. The simulations show that the

operation of the wind turbines in higher turbulence level produced by wake conditions increases the

accumulated damage.

Eco-Islamic marketing: a moral obligation to purchase energy efficient

products

a case study in Amman, Jordan Key Words:

Eco-Islamic Marketing, Energy Efficient , Environment , Behavior Change

Summary:

The study identifies a lack of confidence in state and market that hamper the fast

uptake of Top-down energy efficient measures. Against that background a new

marketing approach is presented that is based on the finding that environment related

behavior change initiatives are most effective when they are implemented at the

religious community level, especially in combination with the environmental

teachings of Islam. This study is the first that concentrates on Eco-Islam induced

marketing activities in the field of energy conservation as well as EE in particular

and shows the potential for its application in the Jordanian energy transition.
