What is a prefix?

What is a root word?
THEY ARE….• A prefix is placed at the beginning of a word
to modify a word or change its meaning.• Pre, un, anti, contra, hetero, sub, syn,
etc.• A suffix is placed at the end of a word.
• ary, escent, fic, fy, icious, osis, oid, etc.• A root word is what is left when there are no
prefixes or suffixes on a word.• Flex, hydro, hyper, ecto, extra, graph,
gram, etc.

Lets look at some prefixes…Extra- Beyond,
more thanExtracurricular
Ex- Out of, former
Ex-president
Contra- Against Contradict
Co- With Copilot
Auto- Self Autopilot
En Put into Enclose
Lets look at some suffixes…Able, ible Capable of,
worthyComfortable, Credible
Age Act of State Salvage, Bondage
Ed Past Jumped, baked
En Made of, to make
Woolen, wooden, darken
Dom State, condition of
Wisdom, kingdom
Er, or Agent, one who Author, baker, winner
Lets look at some words…

Now YOU try it!
• Come up with 5 words that we have not seen today… underline the ROOT words, box in the PREFIX, circle the SUFFIX. They do NOT have to have all three, but make sure you follow directions!
After breaking up the words…
• On the tables given to you, take one word from each group member’s paper. For each suffix/prefix/root word look up the meaning of it on the iPad dictionary. Write down the meaning of each on the table and one more example of it being used.
• Example: un= not; unpredictable
