Prelim Task

Prelim task

What will the prelim include?Film a 30 second conversation between two characters. This should involve a character opening a door and walking into a room or scene, sits down and has a conversation with another character which will demonstrate the shot/reverse shot, 180 degree and match on action rules.

What the two rules you must demonstrate mean?180 degree rule- the camera can move in a half circle along the axis of action to show the characters/ center of attention, to show them facing different directions

Match on action-cutting a piece of action footage and then placing the next shot after it to continue the sequence, e.g. door handle going down, cut, person is in roomSummary of your initial idea: Two people, a driving instructor and a learner are having a conversation about driving instructions.

Preliminary task description

For our preliminary task we had to produce a thirty second, Face-to-Face conversation between two people. It had to involve a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite the character; then they would exchange dialogue. We also had to demonstrate the ideas of match on action rule, shot reverse shot and the 180o Degree Rule. The match on action rule means that when you are editing footage, as scenes are usually shot out of sequence you have to make sure when editing that the shots match up chronologically and in an order that makes sense. The 180o Degree Rule is shown in scenes which involve two characters exchanging dialogue or in an action scene such as a fight. You find the axis the two characters are on and then imagine having a semi-circle going from where they are standing; filming anywhere on that semi-circle would show the characters are talking to each other, however going beyond that semi-circle would make them look as if they were facing the same way in the conversation.

As a group we brainstormed a few scenarios we thought would work well for our preliminary task. Our main idea was a confrontation between two people, from this we started to think of storylines and how it would develop into a conflict. The idea of a conversation between the driving instructor and the learner came up as we were all approaching the legal driving age. We worked on how the scenario would develop and where this would be set as we wanted to give it a modern teen theme so it was suggested that a common room would work well.Prelim Brief

Role:My role in the preliminary task was to film scenes, act and help with the editing process. I acted as one of the characters in the prelim. During filming I had to help my team mate to shoot a scene about two people having a conversation. I made sure not to break the 180 degree rule and to include all our objectives. During editing, I handled cut scenes such as match-on-match and shot-reverse shots, cropping the footage to cut out unwanted scenes and other things such as people who interrupted and typing the words on the slides for the credits.

Brief:In order to meet the objective for the prelim task which involved instructions such as maintaining the 180 rule we stayed on one side of the action, match-on-match which we used to show our actor walking into the setting from outside, shot/reverse shots to show the conversation between the characters and a time limit of 30 seconds, we shot during the day on school grounds since our only source of light was natural lighting and achieved the objective of 30 seconds.

Overall:Overall we worked well as a group since all the roles were divided amongst us with roles such as actor, director and camera man. We also planned everything from script and story board to editing which helped as carry out the task effectively. To improve, we could have managed our time (for the prelim) effectively to meet our target of 30 seconds.THE DRIVING TESTCharacter 1: (opens the door and walks in)MATCH ON ACTIONCharacter 1: (sits down)
