    I. AWAIT LOVE

    2

The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.We beheld the glory of the Father, full of grace and truth. In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God.

In Him was Life and the Life was the Light of all.He came to his own and his own received him not.

Lo, how a Rose e’er bloomingfrom tender stem hath sprung!as we of old have sung.Of Jesse’s lineage coming,It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,When half spent was the night.

    Text: Polish carol; para. by Edith M.G.Reed, 1885-1933Tune: W ZLOBIE LEZY, 44 7 44 7 4444 7; Polish carol

Out of the Orient Crystal Skies Richard Zgodava (1934-2011)

Out of the Orient crystal skies A blazing star did shine,

Showing the place where poorly lies A blessed babe divine.

This shining star three kings did guide

Even from the farthest east, To Bethlehem where it betide

    This blessed babe did rest.

He was born of a maid of royal blood Who Mary was called by name,

A sacred rose which once did bud By grace of heav’nly flame.

And for the joy of his great birth

A thousand angels sing, Glory and peace unto the earth,

Where born is this heavnl’y King. Alleluia!

Sure On This Shining Night Morton Lauridsen (b.1943) from Nocturnes

Sure on this shining night Of starmade shadows round, Kindness must watch for me This side the ground.

The late year lies down the north. All is healed, all is health. High summer holds the earth. Hearts all whole.

    Of the Father’s Love Begotten

Of the Father’s love begotten Ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the Source, the Ending He, Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see Evermore and evermore. Evermore and evermore.

    Evermore and evermore.

    Text: 1 Tim. 3:16 Author: Aurelius C. Prudentius, 413

Translated by: John. M. Neale, 1854 and Henry W. Baker, 1861

Sure on this shining night I weep for wonder

Wand’ring far alone Of shadows on the stars.

All: For he is our childhood’s pattern, Day by day like us he grew,
He was little, weak, and helpless, Tears and smiles like us he knew.
And he feels for all our sadness, And he shares in all our gladness.

    And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love;
For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heav’n above:
And he leads his children on To the place where he has gone.

The twenty-fifth day of December, when ages beyond number had run their course from the creation of the world, when God in the beginning created heaven and earth, and formed man in his own likeness; when century upon century had passed since the Almighty set his bow in the clouds after the Great Flood, as a sign of covenant and peace; in the twenty-first century since Abraham, our father in faith, came out of Ur of the Chaldees; in the thirteenth century since the People of Israel were led by Moses in the Exodus from Egypt; around the thousandth year since David was anointed King; in the sixty-fifth week of the prophecy of Daniel: in the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; in the year seven hundred and fifty-two since the foundation of the City of Rome; in the forty-second year of the reign of Caesar Octavian Augustus, the whole world being at peace, JESUS CHRIST, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to consecrate the world by his most loving presence, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and when nine months had passed since his conception, was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judah, and was made man: The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh.

innovantur naturae: Deus homo factus est.

    Id, quo fuit, permansit,

    et quod non erat assumpsit:

    Non commixtionem passus, neque divisionem.

The Lord said to me: you are my Son, this day I have begotten you.

A wonderful mystery is revealed today: the two natures are renewed: God has become human.

That which he was, he remained, and that which he was not, he assumed: suffering neither mixture nor division.

    -Ps 2:7; Vs. 1, 2, 8

    “Gloria in excelsis Deo!”

Let youthful voices resound today joyfully praising Him who is born for us who is given unto us by the most high God, and brought forth from a Virgin. He is born in the world, is wrapped in swaddling cloths, and placed in a manger in a stable of beasts. He is the ruler over all things. (The Prince of Darkness thus has lost his prey!) Let all the young choristers now sing as did the angels, praising Him who has come into the world: “Glory to God in the Highest!”

    Intercessions

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

O Holy Night Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) arr. Dudley Buck (1839-1909)

Laura Olson, soprano; Colin Rouser, baritone

O Holy night! The stars are brightly shining,It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth.

Long lay the world in sin and error pining,Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices!

O night divine, O night when Christ was born!

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.

So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,Here came the Wise Men from the Orient land.

The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,In all our trials born to be our friend.

He knows our need! He guardeth us from danger!Behold your King! Before the Lowly bend!Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices!

O night divine, O night when Christ was born!

Tune: MUELLER, 11 11 1 11; James R. Murray, 1841-1905.

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear arr. Matthew Culloton (b.1976) The Basilica Cathedral Choir

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold:

“Peace on the earth, good will to all, from heav’n’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing.

    Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heav’nly music floats o’er all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hov’ring wing;

and ever o’er its babel sounds the blessed angels sing, “Peace on earth, good will to all!”

For lo, the days are hast’ning on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling,

and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing.

-Edward Hamilton Sears, 1810-1876, written in 1849, alt.
