l Premise Wiring Terms

Premise Wiring is the cabling, connectors andaccessories that are used to connect LAN (Local AreaNetwork) and phone equipment within a commercialbuilding. Premise Wiring is standardized, this meansthat a governing body (in this case ANSI and TIA/EIA)set requirements regarding the minimum performancelevels for products used as well as offer design andlayout criteria that must be followed. The end result ofa standard is that all the manufacturers are “on thesame page” with regards to how they make their premisewiring products. Also, all cable installers should followthe same rules making it easier to troubleshoot andexpand the wiring in the future.

To explain all of the details that pertain to premisewiring in one page is nothing short of impossible.Nonetheless, this page can be used as a primer for thosewho wish to understand things a little further. The firstplace to start is with common terms:

Backbone Wiring: The cabling used betweentelecommunication closets, entrance facilities,equipment rooms, or buildings.

Category 5E/6: The standard unshielded twisted paircabling used for LAN drops.

Conduit: Circular raceway that cable is run inside.Conduit requirements are specified under appropriateelectrical code.

Cross Connect: The connection method used betweenpermanent cabling (inside the walls) and equipment. Apatch cord is often used as the connection means.

Demarcation Point: The point at which operationalcontrol changes (for example, where the phonecompany’s responsibility ends and the building owner’sbegins).

Drop: Slang term used for each cabling span pulledfrom a telecommunications closet.

Equipment Room: The space dedicated totelecommunications equipment.

Horizontal Wiring: The span of cabling and connectorsbetween the wiring closet and each drop. It is calledhorizontal because this type of wiring does not go up ordown any floors of a building.

Insulation Displacement Contact (IDC): A means ofterminating wires without the need of stripping downto the bare wire.

Jumper: Single twisted pairs used for cross connectingbetween 66, 110, or Krone blocks.

Modular Jack: The female connector used at the end ofeach horizontal cabling drop. Usually Modular Jacksutilize a 6 or 8 contact modular plug (on the patchingside) and a 110, Krone, or other Insulation Displacementconnection method (on the permanent horizontalwiring side).

Modular Plug: The male connector usually found atthe end of a patch cord.

Patch Cord: A cable assembly with modular plugs oneach end. Used for patching equipment to the patchpanel in the equipment room and also used to connectto phones and computers at the drop.

Patch Panel: The common cross connect method usedinside an equipment room. Typical Patch Panels utilize110 or Krone connectors (on the rear) to connect to thehorizontal cabling and modular jacks on the front toconnect to equipment via patch cords.

Star Topology: The topology where wiring stems fromone central point.

Telecommunications Closet: Enclosed space forcontaining telecommunications equipment, cableterminations and cross connects.

Work Area: Building space where occupants utilizetelecommunications equipment.

Wiring Notes:

1.Category 5E/6 unshielded twisted pair is the norm.Use 4 pairsolid conductor inside the walls, 4 pair stranded for patchcords. Plenum rated cabling may be necessary dependingupon fire codes in your area.

2.Maximum distance for a horizontal run is 90m plus anadditional 10m for patching.

3.Fiber is the common choice for backbone wiring. It is alsorecommended for horizontal runs over 100m.

Horizontal runs to office dropsare connected permanently torear of Category 5E/6 patchpanels.

Category 5E/6 patch panels andpatch cords are used to connectto network equipment.

Cable Testing ExplainedCable testing and cable ratings often are not understood by those that purchase network grade patch cords and equipment. The type of testingperformed and the frequency of that testing often is the greatest factor in determining the cost of a cable that you buy. Often, patch cords that seemto be a good value may not be, due to the usage of low quality components and minimally compliant cable. Below is an explanation of the four mostcommon forms of testing conducted on patch cords. Each is explained for you to decide on what best fits your application and budget. L-com strivesto provide a full selection of cable assemblies for all our customers. To make selection simple, we group our cables into one of three differentcategories to identify the type of testing done. Certified cables require a test report produced for each assembly. Qualified cables are controlled on alot basis and do not feature an individualized test report. Rated cables feature all category rated components but only a continuity test is performed.If you need help on your project just contact one of our experts today.

Patch Cord Certification TestingPatch Cord Certification is the best method to insure that thecables will meet all of TIA/EIA-568-B.2_ standards for datatransmission for Ethernet. The TIA/EIA-568-B.2_ Standard coversmany details and requirements for cable quality and performance.This test involves the direct connection of patch cords to acertification tester such as the Fluke Networks DSP4300 Series.Thetester will check many aspects of cable performance such ascontinuity, NEXT, FEXT, and Return Loss. This type of tester alongwith software provided by Fluke Networks can produce excellentreports for those requiring certification of their cable installation.

Network Channel Testing

Continuity TestingContinuity Testing is the most basic form of testing conducted oncables. These types of testers look for opens, shorts or crossedconnections. For Ethernet, this type of testing does not confirmnetwork transmission capability. The most common mistake incable pin-out is an EIA568 A to B cross. A simple continuity testersuch as L-com's DXB64A can easily find this error without theexpense of a certification tester.

Cable Testing TerminologyNEXT - Near End Cross Talk. Signal thatcrosses between twisted pairs or betweenconductors. NEXT is measured at thetransmission end (near end). Measured in dB,failures for this measurement are often causedby termination problems

FEXT - Far End Cross Talk. Crosstalk that ismeasured on the conductors that are not beingused for transmission at the receiver or far endof the transmission. Measured in dB, failuresfor this measurement are often caused bytermination problems

Propagation Delay Skew - Used to define thedifference in signal speed between the fastestand slowest pair within a cable. Also can definethe delay within an individual pair. Must be<45ns for a 4-pair horizontal cable.

Impedance - Measure of the total opposition acircuit offers to the flow of alternating current.Target impedance for UTP and STP cable is100 Ohms. This can be affected by the twist ofthe conductors along with the thickness of theinsulation around the conductors. Return Lossfailures are often caused by cable impedanceproblems.

Return Loss - The ratio reflected power toinserted power. It is the measure of the signalreflections occurring along a network cablesystem. It is often caused by imperfections inthe cable conductors, impedance mismatches,or bad contacts in a plug or jack.

Network Channel testing is a method used to verify performancefrom the workstation to the hub/switch (including patch cords).Channel testing is not accurate for individual patch cords. Bothinstallers and IT professionals conduct this type of testing toinsure that the entire cable system is capable of handling networktraffic. Channel testing differs from Permanent Link testing in thatit includes the patch cords on both ends of the installation. Often,patch cords are overlooked as the cause of network failures.

Permanent Link TestingPermanent Link testing is the preferred method used by installersto certify a cable installation at a customer site.This type of testingverifies the installation by measuring many factors such as cablelengths, NEXT, FEXT and Return Loss. Several certification testersexist on the market including Fluke Networks DSP4300 seriesproducts.This type of tester features a Permanent Link adapter thatconnects from a workstation outlet to the telecom closet outlet.

Align the connector with the wall plate with thespring retainer side down for 45 degree entryplates (as shown) or spring retainer side up forstandard entry wall plates.

Seat fixed retainer first and pivot the connector towards the spring retainerwhile depressing the spring retainer. Pressthe connector into the plate until theretainer snaps and locks in place firmly.

Remove cover and attach the jack base assemblyusing the supplied screws or double stick tape.

Insert the pairs to the color coded slots takingcare to maintain the conductor twist at the IDCterminal. Punch down using a 110 style tool.

Trim excess wire (if your 110 tool doesn’t cut)and snap on the retainer caps.

Notch the cover to match the cable entry andsnap it in place.

Remove approximately 3" of the outer jacketfrom the cable. Take care not to nick the wires.

Secure the cable with a cable tie to the desiredentry point.

Crossed Couplers with Crossed Output Straight Couplers with Straight OutputTIP: What is the difference between straight-thru and cross pinning on a modular cable or coupler?

Straight-thru means each contact is straight pinned to itsrespective contact (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, etc.). Crossed pinningmeans contacts are pinned through to the opposite contact.Example: On an 8 position RJ45: 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, etc.

When using a coupler between two patch cords it isimportant to choose the correct type. As the diagramsillustrate, if the desired pinning from end to end is crossedthen the coupler and cables must be crossed. For straightpinning, all cables and couplers must be straight-thru type.
