How this activity helps? You learn about the properties of light.
You start observing reflection, refraction, and absorption around you.
Reflection, Refraction, Absorption Reflection, Refraction, Absorption
Reflection, refraction, and absorption describe how light interacts with an object. Reflection is when light bounces back when it hits an object. Refraction is when light bends while passing through one substance to another. Absorption is when light is absorbed by an object.
Look at these illustrations to identify these 3 properties of light.

Answer: 1) Reflection 2) Refraction 3) Absorption
How this activity helps? As you learn to distinguish between natural and artificial light sources
your observation skills are sharpened.
Light Source Or NotLight Source Or NotAnything that produces light on its own is called a light source. Some are natural and some are manmade. Look at these illustrations and circle the natural sources of light.
Sun
Oil Lamp
Firefly Stick on fire
Torchlight
Earthen lamp
Star
Lightning
Bulb
Candle
Answers: Natural - Sun, Lightning, Firefly, Star Manmade - Candle, Lamp, Bulb Earthen lamp, Stick on fire, Torchlight
How this activity helps? You understand the difference between reflection and refraction. Your analytical skills improve.
Reflection Or Refraction Reflection Or Refraction
Reflection is when light bounces back after it hits an object. Mirrors, shiny surfaces, some metals, water surface, and so on reflect light. Refraction is when light bends while passing through one substance to another. Prisms, cut diamonds, soap bubbles, and so on refract light.
We have put a bunch of objects. Look at them, identify and tick the ones that reflect light.

Answer: Reflection - Mirror, Metal surface, Moon
How this activity helps?Your observation skills are sharpened. Your science vocabulary is enhanced.
Match The Light TermsMatch The Light TermsSome terms based on lights and optics are given on one side and their definitions are jumbled on the other side. Read and match the correct definitions.
Illustrations are given for you to understand the terms better.

How this activity helps? You choose the right answer while learning about the concepts. Your problem solving skills improve.
Choose The Right TermChoose The Right Term
A) Your friend and you are standing near a pond. She tries to sneak on you, but yousee her coming. You see her in the pond because of ______.
B) The bending of light is called _____.
Answers: A)Reflection B)Refraction C)White Light D)Opaque
(reflection/refraction/absorption/noise in grass)
(refraction/reflection/scattering/ultraviolet light)
Are you ready to learn about different terms related tolights? Pick the right term from the options given.
C) ___________ can be separated into a rainbow of colours.
D) Light does not pass through an object that is all ______.
(White light/polarized light/UV light/fluorescent light)
(opaque/transparent/shiny/translucent)
Answer: A)Reflection B)Refraction C)White Light D)Opaque
How this activity helps? You get to experience how the concept of optical illusion works.
My Thaumatrope My ThaumatropeA thaumatrope is an optical toy that has discs with pictures on each side. When you rotate it at the correct speed, these frames combine to give you the visual of a single image.
Here, we have made two interesting sets of thaumatrope for you. Cut each of them out, fold along the dotted lines, stick at the edges, attach string on both the sides, slide them between fingers of both hands, and pull them. It’s a lot of fun.
How this activity helps? You identify the optical instruments and learn the science behind them.
Identify Me Identify Me Look at these optical instruments. Read the definitions to identify them correctly.
Answer: 1)Praxinoscope 2)Projector 3) Prism
1) One of the earliest animation devices. A strip of picture is placed around the inner surface of a spinning cylinder to create visual animation. Identify me.
2) An optical device that projects an image onto a surface or a screen. Identify me.
3) A transparent solid body used to disperse light into a spectrum. Identify me.
How this activity helps? You gain knowledge about the different types of lenses. Your curiosity increases.
What Lens Am I? What Lens Am I?A lens is an optical device that either focuses or diverges light to form an image. There are many types of lenses. Read the definition, look at the pictures, and identify the type of lens.
Answers: Convex, Concave, Biconvex, Plano convex lens
* Convex or positive lenses will converge or focus light and can form an image.
* Concave or negative lenses will diverge (spread out) light rays.
* Biconvex lens are simple lenses that comprise of two convex surfaces in a spherical form, generally having the same kind of radius of curvature.
* Plano convex lens: A lens that has one side of convex lens and a flat lens (plano) on the other side.
How this activity helps?Your visual tracking skills improve.
Your vocabulary relating to the concepts of light and optics is enhanced.
Hidden Optical Maze Hidden Optical MazeThere are words hidden in this word maze. Look horizontally and vertically to find them. Clue: The words are all related to lights and optics.

How this activity helps? You gain practical physics knowledge. Your scientific vocabulary is enhanced.
Transparent, Opaque, Or Translucent Transparent, Opaque, Or Translucent
Transparent materials let light pass through them in straight lines and so you can see clearly through them.
Translucent materials let some light through, but they scatter the light in all directions and so you cannot see clearly through them.
Opaque materials do not let any light pass through them. They block the light.
Look at these objects and group them as transparent, translucent, or opaque.
