Setting standards for the New HSC Published in Board Bulletin Vol 9 No 6, September 2000
The marks that are awarded will be given meaning by relating them to performance bands that describe the knowledge, skills and understanding of the course typically demonstrated by students whose marks place them in a particular band. Six bands will be used to report achievement. A student who is awarded a mark between 90 and 100 will be placed in band 6. Similarly, a mark between 80 and 89 will correspond to band 5, between 70 and 79 will correspond to band 4, between 60 and 69 will correspond to band 3, and between 50 to 59 will correspond to band 2. A mark below 50 will correspond to band 1, where band 1 is referred to as below the minimum standard expected.

General comments from the 2010 HSC NOTES FROM THE MARKING CENTRE MATHEMATICS , NSW BOS
Candidates are advised to read the questions carefully and set out their working clearly. In answering parts of questions, candidates should state the relevant formulas and the information they use to substitute into the formulas. In general, candidates who show working make fewer mistakes. When mistakes are made, marks can be awarded for the working shown. If a question part is worth more than one mark, working is expected to be shown. Any rough working should be included in the answer booklet for the question to which it applies.

Question 10 is usually the most difficult question on the examination paper but does offer opportunities for picking up extra marks. Even in question 10 there are often 1 mark parts that are surprisingly achievable for many students. Don’t miss this opportunity due to poor timing.
