    Editing Your Wiki Page

Once youve clicked on the EDIT button, the Editing Toolbox will appear on your wiki page.

This toolbox has some familiar tools that resemble other text editing tools youve used in

Moodle. Here is a list of what each tool does:

    1.

    Makes highlighted text bold.

    2.

    Makes highlighted text italicized.

    3.

    Makes highlighted text underlined.

    4.

Opens up the main text formatting box. The text formatting box enables changing the

color and style of your text. The tools include:font type; font size; text color; background

(of text) color; alignment; vertical position; and strike through.

    5.

Menu to select headings or normal text.

    6.

    Makes a numbered list.

    7. Makes a bulleted list.

    8.

Inserts a horizontal line to break up page area.

    9.

    Inserts a Web page link.

    10.

Inserts a file. This can be a video file, document file, audio file, or image.

    11.

Inserts a widget. This is an embedded file, such as a Web page, Web form, video, etc.

This tool will be explained in detail further into these instructions.

    Editing Text

In order to edit text in Wikispaces, you must type the text FIRST; highlight it, and then select

the text editing tool you want to use. For example, you would type the words, then highlight

them with your cursor, then click the BOLD button to make the entire sentence bold. Make

sure you click the EDIT button first on your page. You cannot make any changes without

    clicking it first.

If you change the color and style of the text, it should continue to use those settings, as long as

you place the cursor next to the last word in that sentence, then hit the ENTER key to move

down the page. The next words you type should have the same color and style you assigned

    the first sentence.

    dding Web Links

    1.

To add a Web link to the page, click on the LINK button in the Editing Toolbox to start.

    2.

A dialog box appears. MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE WEB ADDRESS FROM THE LIST ON THE

LEFT SIDE OF THE DIALOG BOX.

    3.

Type in the LINK TEXT. These are the words you want to click on.

    4.

Place a checkmark in the box for New Window if you want a new page to open todisplay the Web page. This keeps Wikispaces open in another window so you do not

have to hit the BACK arrow to get back to Wikispaces. You can view both pages at once

    if you need to.

    5.

Type in the COMPLETE WEB ADDRESS.

    6.

Click ADD LINK when done. The link will appear on your wiki page. Click SAVE to save

    your changes.

You can edit a Web link just like you edit text. Highlight the link text, then open the text color

and style menu from the Editing Toolbox to make changes to the link text. You cannot change

the color of link text. It will either be blue (before it is clicked) or purple (after it is clicked).

This adds the file to your Wikispaces files. Now you have to put that file on the wiki

    page.

    7. Your document file will now be available by a link on your wiki page. The button will

show the name of the file, as it found it on your computer or flash drive. For example,

the button I added is Writing_Process_Organizer.pdf.

If you want the button to display something more appealing, you will have to rename

the file on your computer FIRST before you upload it to Wikispaces. You can move a file

by clicking on the file on the wiki page in EDIT mode, then selecting the style and color

editing tool from the editing toolbox and selecting alignment from the menu. This lets

you center, right-justify, or left-justify your document link.

    8.

There are two kinds of widgets in Wikispaces: internal and external. The internal widgets

include things like adding a table of contents to the page, adding a tag cloud to the page, etc.

The external widgets include adding documents, videos, pictures, slide shows, digital posters,

etc., from other Web pages like Slide Share, YouTube, Scribr, Glogster, etc.

To add a widget to your page, click on the WIDGET button on the editing toolbox. Widgets

    Menu will open.

    dding a Video Widget

Find the video you want to add to your wiki page. The site MUST provide the embed code for

you to use a widget to show it.

If you select VIDEO from the external widgets list, another list of Web sites appears, as shownbelow:

If you found a video on a site that is not listed, use OTHER VIDEO at the bottom of the list.

NOTE: YOU CAN ONLY USE SITES THAT PROVIDE AN EMBED CODE WITH THE VIDEO. IF THE

SITE IS BLOCKED AT SCHOOL (like YouTube) THE EMBEDDED VIDEO WILL NOT PLAY ON

    SCHOOL COMPUTERS.

So, how do you embed a video as a widget? Well look at Vimeo, since the videos on it are not

    blocked at school.

I found a video on Vimeo I want to use. The SHARE feature is what you look for on the video

sites. On Vimeo, the share feature is right on the video player, as shown below:

  • 8/11/2019 Preparing for the 21st Century World Wikispaces Pages Instructions

    14/16

When you click on the SHARE feature, a box opens with the embed code.

  • 8/11/2019 Preparing for the 21st Century World Wikispaces Pages Instructions

    15/16

Copy all of the embed code by highlighting it and pressing CNTRL+C on your keyboard, or right

click-copy with the mouse. The code looks foreign, but you do not have to know how to read

it, you just have to know how to copy it.

Go to your Wikispaces page, click on the EDIT button, then the WIDGET button on the main

toolbox. Select VIDEO, and then pick VIMEO from the list. Paste the code into the text box

provided, and then click SAVE. The PREVIEW option doesnt work well, so I dont use it.

Your Vimeo video will be shown with a placeholder on the editing page. You will not be able to

view it until you save your changes.

The embedded video is now on your wiki page and can be played right there. No need to go to

    Vimeo to watch it

    16/16

No matter what you are embedding on your wiki pagevideo, document, digital poster, the

site that hosts your media must provide an embed code to make the media into a widget. One

way to find common sites that do this is to look at the lists for each form of media in thewidget menu. If you find something on a site and the site provides the embed code but

Wikispaces doesnt list the site, use the OTHER option from the menu to paste in the HTML

    code.
