The Penitential Rite Preparing to Encounter God

We, too are called to prepare ourselves for the sacred encounter with the Lord in the sacred liturgy. • More profound an encounter then anyone in

ancient Israel ever imagined or experienced.

The Penitential Rite Preparing to Encounter God

• We truly are not worthy • Our sinfulness stands in stark contrast to what we

are about to do at Mass. • So, we are invited to “prepare ourselves to

celebrate the sacred mysteries” by humbly confessing our sins.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleans us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:19

The Penitential Rite Examination of Conscience

• We confess not only “to almighty God” but also “to you my brothers and sisters.”

• Sin affects our relationship with: 1. God 2. Others 3. Self

Page 8: Preparing to Encounter God

The Sacred Liturgy God’s Grace Our Salvation

The Penitential Rite The Confiteor

Challenges us to consider seriously four areas of our lives:

1. In my thoughts 2. In my words 3. In what I have done 4. In what I have failed to do

Page 9: Preparing to Encounter God

The Penitential Rite The Confiteor

1. In my thoughts: Saint Paul exhorts us to guard our thoughts, keeping them focused on what is good:

Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8

Page 11: Preparing to Encounter God

The Penitential Rite The Confiteor

1. In my thoughts: In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gives several warnings about sinning in thought:

1. Anger 2. Lust 3. Judging 4. Worry and discouragement

Page 12: Preparing to Encounter God

2. In my words: The spoken word can be used to bless and to curse, and when it is used for evil it causes much turmoil.

• “How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire.”

James 3:5

Page 13: Preparing to Encounter God

2. In my words: • Gossip • Slander • Insult • Lying • Boasting

Page 14: Preparing to Encounter God

3. In what I have done:

• Actions that directly hurt other people or our relationship with God.

• Ten Commandments

Page 15: Preparing to Encounter God

4. In what I have failed to do:

• Also held accountable on Judgment Day for the good that we failed to do!

“Whoever knows what is right and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” James 4:17

Current Text Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.

Through your goodness we have this bread to offer,

which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life.

- Blessed be God for ever.

By the mystery of this water and wine

may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.

Through your goodness we have this wine to offer,

fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink.

- Blessed be God for ever.

Lord God, we ask you to receive us

and be pleased with the sacrifice we offer you with humble and contrite hearts.

Lord, wash away my iniquity; Cleanse me from my sin.

Pray, brethren,

that our sacrifice will be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.

May the Lord accept this sacrifice at your hands

for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his Church.

Latin Benedictus es, Domine, Deus universi,

quia de tua largitate acceptimus panem, quem tibi offerimus,

fructum terrae et operis manuum hominum : ex quo nobis fiet panis vitae.

- Benedictus Deus in saecula.

- Benedictus Deus in saecula.

In spiritu humilitatis et in animo contrito

Suscipiamur a te, Domine ; Et sic fiat sacrificium nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie,

un placeat tibi, Domine Deus.

Lava me, Domine, ab iniquitate mea, Et a peccato meo munda me.

Orate, fratres,

ut meum ac vestrum sacrificium acceptablie fiat apud Deum Patrem omnipotentem.

Suscipiat Dominus sacrificium de manibus tuis

ad laudem et gloriam nominis sui, ad utilitatem quoque nostrum

totiusque Ecclesiae suae sanctae.
