Lauraya started the year with her periodic campus visits, considering it a good time to check on the accomplishments and progress of every campus. She started with an Opening Meeting with the deans and directors of the different colleges/ campuses and units on January 6, where she congratulated the middle managers for a job well done in 2013, leading to the university’s success in the ISO re-certification audit. Dr. Lauraya reiterated the university’s 13-point agenda under her administration, stressing the development of a culture of service as its primary concern. Did we use it above all for ourselves, for our interests, or did we know how to spend it for others as well?” Whatever answers we may have, the next question to ask would be: What will I do this year? Can I do better than I did last year? As 2014 unfolds, let us strive to exceed our previous achievements by making them “others- centered”. Representatives of Vittana met with RDC personnel and SEDP staff on January 22 at the BU-GASS Conference Room, and signed a MOU to formalize the partnership. The university research study, “Employability of BU Graduates”, will have respondents from class of 2009-2010 with stable employment from the top courses from the College of Engineering (CENG), College of Business, Economics, and Management (CBEM), College of Nursing (CN), College of Industrial Technology (CIT), and College of Science. Using projectors and wide screens, the live coverage of the gathering in Malacañang Palace, Manila, was played in conspicuous locations in the different campuses of BU, where employees and students alike gathered to join the country in prayer. (CAF), College or Arts and Letters (CAL), and the Language Center during the event, “A Day to Remember: CieloAdelina Florin Sarte-Salceda Professorial Chair Awarding Ceremonies” held on January 9, at the BUCE-CTE Training Hall. Named after the governor’s mother, Cielo Adelina Florin Sarte-Salceda, the grant aims to support education that is meaningful, significant, and responsive to the needs of the community, specifically the province of Albay. It was established on January 10, 2010, on the 88th birthday of Mrs. Salceda. The grant lives on even after her death in 2011, and has expanded from supporting solely Teacher Education to accommodating other fields of specialization. To support the field of Architecture and Engineering, Engr. Medel E. Aligan, Arch. Reynaldo O. Nacional Jr., Engr. Ana G. Bilaro, and Engr. Domingo O. Pojardo of BUCEng were awarded PhP100,000 for the “Development

of a Typhoon Resilient Housing Structure”; for Agriculture, Dr. Vigilia G. Armendi of BUCAF was awarded PhP50,000 for her research on the “Utilization of Cocopeat as Fertilizer for Coconut Trees”; and for Arts and Culture, Prof. Julio N. Mendoza of BUCAL was awarded PhP50,000 for his “Bicol Kinetics Basis for Folk Dance Interpretation” and Dr. Angela E. Lorenzana of the BU Language Center the same amount for her “Lexical Morphological Phonological Analysis of Six Miraya Dialects”. In her message during the event, Dr. Fay M. Lauraya affirmed that through these Professorial Chair grants, Bicol University is being true to its intention of bringing the university closer to the community. Bicol University College of Industrial Technology (BUCIT) lighted up on January 21 six solar-powered lamp posts installed at the BUCIT grounds. Dr. Erlinda C. Relucio, dean of the college, said that the success of this project was due to team effort , with the

help of Engr. Victor Solito Isaac, Project Chairperson, together with members Prof. Gilmoore Olfindo, Dr. Eduardo M. Bertis, Prof. Antonio Malitante, and Prof. Joel B. Habalo. She also mentioned members of the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) and the administration as instrumental to the success of the event . She thanked Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya for being very supportive and understanding of the needs of BUCIT. Ms. Carla Jane

Desdir, BUCIT College Student Council President , shared her sentiment that the lamp posts are a big help to the students. Dr. Lauraya commended the Solar Electrification of the park and said she is looking forward to more innovative projects from BUCIT. BUCE holds National Educator’s Congress

Bicol University College of Education Center for Teaching Excellence (BUCE-CTE) spearheaded the National Educator’s Congress on January 17 at The Oriental Hotel, Legazpi City. The congress revolved around the theme: “Gearing Up for World Class Teacher Education: Learning from International Models of Excellence and Innovation”.

In his speech, the governor gave the participants a world view of the educational landscape and what he expects the teachers to do in the face of the challenges posed by these international trends. Dr. Lauraya, for her part, appealed to them to work together towards ensuring the quality of education in the community, without

falling short of global standards. Educators from various provinces in the country participated in the activity, during which topics and issues affecting education in the country were discussed. Keynoting the congress with her discussion of the theme was Dr. Ester B. Ogena, president of the Philippine Normal University.
