Finally, this job aid is for both K-12 and corporate EdWebs. As such, there are some questions that may not apply to both settings. For example, the first question in the Instructional Setting section may not apply to a K-12 setting. If you do not think a specific question applies, please just write “N/A.” We may challenge you on that or things may change, but it’s okay to skip questions you think do not apply.

Instructional Setting1. What is the instructional need or opportunity?

After graduating in 2004 with a BA in Education and an Endorsement in Early Childhood, I was hired to create a preschool at my local church. I had the task of creating an in-depth proposal, a forecasted budget, designing all media (including the official logo, brochures/flyers, applications, acceptance letters, handbook etc.), purchasing furniture and supplies, preparing the preschool for licensing and creating the curriculum. It was an overwhelming task and I spent many hours researching on the internet trying to locate any information on how to create a preschool only to come up without any answers. As a result, I am choosing to create an EdWeb to instruct potential preschool owners/developers on how to create a successful preschool that will not only meet state licensing standards but also assist educators in developing a preschool that will meet the expectations of parents and help give preschool age children a strong academic foundation.

2. Will this be a self-paced, online course or a group-paced, online course. For example, IT5660 is a group paced, online course. What is your rationale for that decision?

This EdWeb will be self-paced allowing the individual to learn as much as they want or need in one or multiple settings. There will be many different levels to this EdWeb and each participant will be given control as to how far or deep they want divulge into the information. Educators are very busy and most do not have the time to set aside 3 to 5 hours to learn everything on a particular website. This website’s design will be set-up to cater to both the passerby and someone who would like to know everything about developing a preschool.

3. What are the benefits and potential drawbacks of your answer to #2?

The benefit of having the website be geared towards an individual and to be self-paced is that it allows the participant to be in control of their own learning process and environment and also allows them to decide when and how much they want to absorb. However, a disadvantage would be that they do not spend enough time on the website to fully grasp the content or take only pieces from different sections misinterpreting the information or taking it out of context.

4. What hardware and software do potential learners have?

a) Browsers and version numbers

Internet Explorer Version 8 would be the recommended version to access my EdWeb; however, Version 7 would also work. Firefox could also be used.

b) Internet access, i.e., cable, dish, T-1, modem

Anyone who has access to the internet will be able to access my EdWeb. However, I do recommend that they have high-speed cable internet or DSL. Dial-up may cause delays in pages loading and/or graphics not displaying.

Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
This is going to be a wonderful project!
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Given the diversity of your audience, it is probably a good idea to set your standards, somewhat like you do here. Just state, “this is what you need . . . “
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Yes but perhaps if someone does that, they will find out they made a mistake or did not get the certification or whatever and will come back for more info, more motivated than previously?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Good analysis.
Page 5: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

c) Firewalls or “parental controls”

My site must be added to the “safe site” list of a security system like McAfee or Norton. This will prevent any blocks or warning signals from this type of computer protection software from interfering with the user’s ability to access all of the material.

Another thing that I have considered is the potential for this website to turn into a small business. If I decide to publish it to the web by purchasing a domain, I will probably password protect information and templates down to a certain level. Participants who desire full access to the website and all templates will need to pay a small fee. At this time, this is just an idea, and it will not be a part of my final project that is submitted.

d) Other technology, hardware or software challenges.

At this point, I am not sure. I have some ideas that I have brainstormed which include having an interactive budget template so the participants could plug in figures and press “calculate” to get the results. I have thought about an interactive room model in which they could place, move and remove furniture in a preset area to help them develop a layout for their own preschool. I have seen these interactive models on apartment websites. However, for both of these, at this time I am not sure what software program the viewer will need to have downloaded on their computer to do these types of activities.

5. Who are the stakeholders? For example, in a K-12 setting, the stakeholders are probably students, teachers, parents, and perhaps the school board and/or the community. In a corporate setting the stakeholders are probably learners, managers, executive sponsors, perhaps HR, and the CEO or board of directors.

The stakeholders will be early childhood educators who most likely will have an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education with an Endorsement in Early Childhood. Potentially, I could also have daycare workers who are interested in adding a preschool to their building/program and/or business associates who are interested in sponsoring (financially) and marketing a new preschool to a local community. Students just graduating high school or those in college could use this EdWeb as a way to determine whether or not they want to pursue a degree in early childhood education. This EdWeb has the potential to reach many different types of learners that are of all ages and from all walks of life.

6. What other instructional context issues, challenges or problems are important in this situation?

I do not have any at this time, however, as I begin the design process that might change.

Goals and Outcomes1. What do each group of stakeholders need to see to consider this instruction successful?

To consider my EdWeb a success each group of stakeholders will need to know and understand every facet in how to create a preschool. They will walk away from the instruction feeling confident that they can take the information that they have learned and apply it to their own preschool developmental process while also having a handful of materials in the form of templates that have already been created for their own personal use.

2. What indicators will you use to determine if the instruction meets the desired outcomes of each group of stakeholders? For example, if one of the outcomes a group of stakeholders needs to see is

Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Yes but seems like the most likely audience are those you describe in your first sentence. Perhaps that is the audience you should focus on now?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Seems like a good idea!

an increase in sales, how will you measure that increase? Do you need to collect baseline data in order to calculate the increase in sales? Use the table below to answer this question.

3. What other outcomes do you need to measure? Was this a quality website and would you recommend it to someone else? Was the website easy to use and navigate? Was there too much or too little information? Will you be using my templates/materials in your own preschool?

Learner Needs and Characteristics1. What are the demographics of the learners?

a. Age Range:

The approximate age range of learners would be ages 18 to 65. I started at age 18 because that is the normal age of a high school graduate. As they embark on their college career, they might be able to use this EdWeb to influence their chosen area of study. My target audience would be professionals, ages 22 to 55. That is the age range that will most likely be interested in learning how to create and implement a new preschool. I decided to include the age range of 55 to 65 because of the possibility that teachers who are close to retirement or who are retired and/or business associates might have an interest in financing or assisting in the developmental process of a new preschool. Of course, someone who is past the age of 65 would still be able to access and participate in my project; however, I felt that age range would have less of an interest and/or computer knowledge to successfully carry out required tasks.

b. Educational Level:

Most of my learners will have either an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education with an emphasis or Endorsement in Early Childhood. Those who have a business degree with a focus in entrepreneurship might also have an interest in learning how to develop a preschool from the business perspective. Finally, my hope is that I will have some learners who will have just graduated high school. My EdWeb could influence them in the academic career path of Early Childhood Education.

c. Other important demographics, e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, languages, disabilities?

This EdWeb will not exclude learners based on gender, race or ethnicity. Anyone who understands English will be able to navigate, learn and actively participate in all aspects of this site. Those who have hearing disabilities will be able to successfully complete all stages as the sound aspects of my webinar will be in addition to the content. However, the site will be somewhat limiting to those who have a vision disability if accommodations on the side of the learner are not previously enacted. Adobe Reader 9 now has a text to voice function called “Read Out Loud”. This function can be activated and it will allow the learner to listen to the documents being read. Some of my documents will be Adobe PDF files; however, I am not sure which ones and to what extent at this point. Finally, since my EdWeb is geared toward self-

Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
But your focus is on those who have graduated from college with a degree in Education and an endorsement in Early Childhood Education? The more homogeneous your audience, the easier it is to design the examples, stories and cases. Make sense?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Good analysis!
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Are these questions for your survey? Perhaps it would be helpful to make these Likert scale questions so you don’t just get “yes” or “no” answers?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
What will your pre-survey will measure? How much they already know? Given that your learners are volunteers, all of your surveys are optional. The data from these surveys might be very important in terms of whether or not you can eventually charge for use of some of the features in the site. Any thoughts about other data you might need to make that decision?
Dawn, 11/15/09,
I decided to make this group my main focus. The other groups that I had listed will not move through the site to learn how to create a preschool. I think they will be more observers than learners. 11.14.09.JD: I agree with your decision, i.e., your stakeholders are the same as your students. Seems like someone could, however, make the case that other stakeholders are parents and their children who attend the preschool, once it is open. The point is that stakeholders always include students who take the course but also include groups of people who do *not* take the course. Re the second column: Don’t your learners ultimately want to open a new preschool? The “develop and implement a new preschool” is the process but the product, i.e., the *results* are to open a preschool. True? If yes, then please revise that second column. Re the third column: How will you measure if the learners actually “opened a new preschool?”
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
I am a bit confused here. Above you say your stakeholders are “early childhood educators . . . “ The groups you list above should be listed in the first column of this table. Please revise. – 5 points.
Page 7: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

paced individual learning, any participant who has a learning disability will be able to work through the site at their own pace and convenience.

2. Are these learners volunteers? That is, are they required to take this instruction or will your EdWeb be considered “self-improvement?”

All of my learners will be volunteers. They will not be required or forced to work through all or some of my EdWeb. “How much” or “how little” they learn will be up to each individual participant. It is my hope that each learner will be intrigued to work through every content area; however, that process is in the hands of the participant.

3. What prior experiences do potential learners have with this content or related areas?

Since my learner’s educational background will cover a wide range, their prior experiences will also reflect diversity. For those that have just graduated high school, their only prior experience may be working with children in a babysitting setting, volunteering in an early childhood classroom and/or knowing how to navigate a website. For the professional age group, ages 22 to 55, their prior experience might be drastically different. They may have obtained a degree in early childhood, taught in a preschool or elementary classroom, worked with children in a daycare setting, been employed as a principal/administrator or as an entrepreneur they may be familiar with how to start a successful business. Obviously, most if not all of this particular age group will also know how to navigate and learn from an educational website. Finally, my last age group of teachers who are close to retirement or retired and business associates will most likely have the educational or business knowledge from previous experience to use my EdWeb successfully.

4. What are the technology skills of the learners?a. Approximately what percentage of learners have taken online instruction before?

I would say that my answer would have to be 0% to 100%. Without having the results of a survey when my learner’s first visit my EdWeb, I do not have the ability to give you an accurate approximation. However, if I were to guess focusing on the age range of 18 to 55, I would say that over 50% have taken an online course in some format. Whether it was volunteer and done through locating an educational website through a search engine, done as an assignment through a school/district or through a corporate training program, I think the vast majority of my learners will have a firm base knowledge of online instruction. When looking at the age range of 55 to 65 and beyond, I would say that the percentage does diminish to an estimated 10% to 20% because of their age and when technological advance such as the internet and online learning became available in their lifetime.

b. Approximately what percentage of learners use the Internet for educational or professional reasons?

Looking at the entire age range of my learners, ages 18 to 65 and above, I feel that over 65% have used the internet for educational or professional reasons.

5. What are the learning styles and skills of the learners? Please see the Impact of Learning Styles article in DocSharing. a. Generally, what are the learning styles of your learners? If you have no idea, how/where

can you find that information?

I really do not have any idea on what learning styles best represent the people who will be participating in my EdWeb. I would say that I would have a solid representation of every type of

Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
For your professional group, would this be 100%?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
For your professional group, most of them have some experience with online instruction?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
I encourage you to focus on this group, per my comment above. They have lots in common and that makes your design job easier.
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Do you think some learners will return to your site many times, using it more as a job aid than as instruction?
Page 8: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

learner (auditory, visual and kinesthetic); however, as to the percentages, I would not be able give an accurate assessment. I could do general research on the internet and see if I could find case studies of educational and/or professional online learners and the learning styles that best represent that community, however I still feel that would not be an accurate assessment of those who will be visiting my EdWeb because of the wide age and previous experience range of my audience.

b. Are your learners self-directed learners? What evidence do you have to support your answer?

Yes, I would say that most of my learners are self-directed learners. Those who access my EdWeb will be doing research on how to create a preschool. This research will be self-initiated as they will “choose” to go to my site based on the results of their search most likely through a search engine. I assume that there will be some cases where an employer will ask an employee to conduct research on their behalf. This employee will be under direction of the employer, but they will still be guiding their own research on this topic as to where to go and what information to obtain.

c. What other learning styles or skills issues are important to consider for the design of this instruction?

I feel it is important to make sure my EdWeb caters to all 3 categories of learners: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. I also want to include all 3 activities discussed in Horton: Absorb, Do and Connect. The EdWeb will be centered on “Absorb Activities” as I will be presenting a large amount of information within a number of categories. However, it is my desire to infuse my EdWeb with interactivity by incorporating a “Do” exercise into as many topics as possible. Personally, I learn by doing and I feel strongly that if a learner can apply what they learned into a hands-on activity, it will further assist the learner in retaining the knowledge they obtained. I also want to reach my auditory and visual audience by creating multi-media presentations that allow them to learn the material while having fun.

6. What are the reading skills/level of the learners?

Learners will need a 10th grade reading level, but preferably, they will surpass that requirement.

7. What are the expectations and/or assumptions your learners have about instruction and/or this topic?

I do not personally know the expectations/assumptions of my learners, however, having been tasked with the responsibility to build a quality preschool, I can guess that they are hungry to learn and are excited about the opportunity to build a solid preschool program whether their role assigned is as a future director, employee (teacher), sitting on an educational board or to assist in financing the project. They will want to create a strong preschool program that not only provides the students with a cost efficient safe learning environment but also to give those students a solid academic foundation that will help them be successful as they begin their academic career.

8. What are the incentives and disincentives for learners to successfully complete this instruction? a. Will learners take this instruction in their free time or during their regular work hours?

There are two different situations that would bring me to two different conclusions. The first is the volunteer self-initiated learner. This learner will be participating in the EdWeb on their own time and for their own purpose of learning how to create a preschool. However, for example, if

Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Perhaps they also want the information chunked into small units so they can work on each unit at their own pace and then go onto the next unit?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Your idea above about a calculator that totals their work on a job aid, seems a great Do activity. Same with the moving furniture around. Perhaps you can find an interior design site that offers that type of interactivity and you could adapt it?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
As well as our CIVs, please.
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Perhaps some of your learners will come to your site, see how much work is involved, and decide to drop the idea of starting a pre-school?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
If you read the learning styles article in DocSharing you know that the general consensus is that if the instruction is well designed, in our case follows our CIVs and Horton’s Absorb, Do, Connect, then all learning styles are addressed.
Page 9: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

an employer of a daycare setting wants to expand their business into offering a preschool, I could see an employer assigning an employee the task of researching how to create a preschool. This employee might be then participating in the EdWeb on company time and during regular work hours.

b. Do learners need the instructional information? Do they get rewarded for using it?

No, they would not necessarily need the instructional information if they had other avenues to obtain information in how to create a preschool. However, this EdWeb would definitely increase their productivity as all details from creating a proposal to the physical design of a classroom will be laid out in an easy-to-follow format.

The reward will not be monetary or physical. However, the satisfaction of putting together a quality and successful preschool would be an internal reward for every learner.

9. What other learner needs or characteristics are important and/or relevant to this project?

I cannot think of any other needs or characteristics at this time. However, as I move into the design phase of my EdWeb, I am sure that will change.

Project Management1. For the purposes of the Certificate Program, your EdWeb will be nearly complete at the end

of the second course, IT5670. You may enhance your EdWeb in the third course, IT5680, i.e., you may add special features such as mastery tests, quizzes, podcasts, animations, simulations and other multimedia.

Do those milestones fit with the needs and/or expectations of the organization sponsoring your EdWeb? If not, describe how you plan to handle the discrepancy.

Yes, I do not have an organization sponsoring my EdWeb. I will be working on it for my own use and hopefully publish it to the internet with a possible goal of using it to start a small business in the future.

2. How much time per week do you have to work on your EdWeb?

I am currently working part-time out of my home tutoring Korean students through an online/phone English program 4 hours a day Sunday through Thursday. I am also taking a graduate class at another school to keep my Nebraska teaching certificate active. So, with my schedule, I feel like I can dedicate 20 hours per week for the rest of the semester. Of course I will meet all requirements in this course, but I also foresee myself working on my EdWeb over Winter break increasing my work time to 30 hours. In Conclusion, my goal is to spend 120 hours on my EdWeb until the end of the semester and a total of 90 hours during Winter break (taking one week off around the holidays).

How much time do you have to devote to your EdWeb during IT5670?

Again I will be working part-time and taking my final course at my alma mater for Nebraska teacher re-certification. So, my current plan is to work on my EdWeb 20 hours per week reaching a total of 320 hours spent for the total semester in IT5670.

3. Are you the content expert? a. If you are a content expert, you may still want a “second set of eyes” to review your

content. Who will be available to provide this support?

Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Do you mean the end of the Fall semester 2009?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Isn’t the ultimate reward that their pre-school is certified and they actually enroll students?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Good analysis!
Page 10: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

I am the content expert on this project; however, I do have numerous contacts that are available for support including a former early childhood professor at my alma mater who now holds the position of evaluating early childhood program for the Nebraska state department of education and also I know many early childhood teachers that work in a preschool setting.

4. What other types of experts do you need for this project? For example, do you need to work with the IT department when you are ready to implement your EdWeb? When do you plan to discuss this project with each expert? Use the following table if there are more than two experts with whom you need to coordinate.

NA

5. Who has to approve this project?

No one will have to approve this project. I am doing this on my own.

6. Organizational change issues: Please use titles, not personal names, for these questions. Note: eLearning frequently fails due to organizational change issues. See the following for more information.

NA

7. What other resources or project management issues are important or relevant to this project?

None at this time.

Scope of EdWeb1. What is the scope of this instructional product, i.e., is it a lesson, a group of lessons, a full

semester course, a multi-course curriculum, etc.?

The scope of my EdWeb is to create a website that will show my learners how to create a preschool covering every physical, educational and financial facet. The following topics will be covered in detail:

Preschool Proposal Budget Logo Media (Brochures/Flyers/Posters, Application, Handbook, Parent Letters) Marketing Physical Design Purchasing Furniture and Supplies Licensing Curriculum (including Assessments) Hiring staff

2. Approximately how many hours will it take for students to complete your EdWeb?

I am guessing it will take about 2 hours to complete; however, that is only an estimation. I do not know what each Unit will contain or to what depth of detail I will include. I am guessing that this estimation will be adjusted as I develop each unit. Also, it depends on the learner. Some learners

Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
2 hours = 120 minutes and you have 10 topics. So that is approximately 12 minutes/topic. Each topic includes Absorb, Do and perhaps Connect activities. 12 minutes may be fine. Just wanted to clarify.
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Nice list of your major content topics!
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Great support network!
Page 11: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

will want to just read the material and move on, others will want to do every activity and use the EdWeb as their main resource for building a preschool. If the latter is the case, I would estimate they would spend 3 to 5 hours working through the EdWeb because they will want to make developmental decisions as they progress through the material.

3. Approximately how many hours will you need to design and develop your EdWeb?

I am estimating my EdWeb will take around 400 hours to complete.

4. Review your answer to Project Management question #2 about how much time you have to devote to this project during IT5670. Compare that number with the number you estimated in the previous paragraph (#3 in this section). Are those numbers close enough to make this project doable? If not, what needs to change, i.e., either the amount of time you devote to this project or the size of this project?

Under the project management category, I had calculated that I had 530 hours to work on my EdWeb which was made up of time spent this semester, winter break and next semester. In this section, I estimated my EdWeb taking approximately 400 hours. That leaves me about 130 hours of flexibility that I can use to perfect or enhance my EdWeb before the final completion date.

5. What other project scope issues are important or relevant to this project?

Above, I listed 10 topics/categories, but within those sections, I know that I will have many subcategories. I think an issue that I will struggle with is to know how detailed I should be under each heading. It will be finding the middle of being too detailed and not detailed enough. I am sure I will learn as I go; however, I don’t want to get into a position where my project gets too big and I do not have it finished by the required completion date.

Another scope issue is making sure I create an EdWeb that can be used to implement a preschool in a variety of settings. For example, some learners may be interested in starting a small preschool out of their home, others may want to create a preschool at a church or expand their daycare to include a preschool program and others may have the financing and resources to build an actual building to house a new preschool. Each of these options will require different budgets, marketing, furniture/supplies, staff etc. I want to be conscientious of these differences and be able to speak to my learners’ needs accordingly

Objective # What is the specific behavior or performance students must demonstrate?

How will you measure it?

Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
11.14.09.JD: We will discuss this in IT5670 but Horton and others recommend converting instructional objectives to motivating stories or movies or something to excite the learner about the topic. Instructional objectives are really written for instructional designers, not students.
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Another way to collect data to help you make these decisions is to have a blog or perhaps Ning group where your learners can discuss and ask questions?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
Excellent insight! Please remember that formative evaluations are your best friends so perhaps you prototype each topic and then conduct a formative evaluation on it to gather information about what level of detail you need to include.

information into a budget template using Excel. document to the Ning site for feedback. The goal would be to create a balanced start-up and monthly budget without a loss the first year. However, not all businesses can start out like that.

Logo The learner will create a Logo for his/her preschool.

The learner will post his/her final product to the Ning site for comments and suggestions.

Marketing The learner will market his/her preschool to the community by choosing the appropriate methods through examples and by creating a brochure, flyer/poster and a business card.

A True/False quiz will be given to test comprehension of the material. The learner can also post his/her marketing methods and materials on the Ning site for feedback.

Media The learner will create an application/application checklist, acceptance letter and packet, mission statement program and goals flyer and a parent handbook by using the templates provided.

The learner can post his/her final products to the Ning site for comments and suggestions.

Physical Design The learner will design the physical layout of his/her preschool. To aid in the process, the learner will have the opportunity to experiment with an interactive room design simulator. The learner will also learn the six important concepts when designing a preschool layout.

The learner will write the six important concepts to consider when designing a layout in an open text box. The student can click on a link to check his/her answer. He/she can also post his/her finalized layout to the Ning site for comments and suggestions.

Purchasing Furniture and Supplies

The learner will purchase all furniture and supplies by using the resources on the website.

A multiple choice quiz will check understanding of the important concepts to know when purchasing furniture and supplies. The learner will create and complete a checklist of furniture and supplies and will put it on the Ning site for feedback.

Licensing The learner will license the preschool according to his/her own state standards.

An extensive multiple choice quiz on basic licensing standards.

Curriculum The learner will choose a pre-set curriculum/assessments or he/she will create his/her own by following my guidelines.

The learner will follow a job aid on how to choose a curriculum. If the learner chooses to create an early childhood curriculum then he/she will follow a separate job aid. Also, the learner can post his/her curriculum choice and/or curriculum outline to the Ning site.

1. What learning resources (databases, tools, documentation, articles, books, job aids, people, etc.) will learners need during this instruction? How will you obtain these learning resources?

The learner will need a computer that has Microsoft Excel and Adobe Acrobat Reader plus access to a high-speed internet connection. He/she will also need to download a job aid and might need a calculator (I might see if I can incorporate a regular calculator into my EdWeb for use on the Budget page).

2. What other instructional content issues are important or relevant to this project?

Dawn, 11/15/09,
This was added on 11/15/09. You are right. There are things that they need to think of when purchasing furniture/supplies (safety, durability and allergies etc).
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
11.14.09.JD: Is this a list of vendors or is it a list of important or critical features the furniture needs to have? Might furniture be regulated by a state?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
11.14.09.JD: Does the learner need to memorize these concepts or perhaps just use a job aid to design the layout?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
11.14.09.JD: Why “true/false?” Is there something about this objective that indicates true/false is a good question format? Or, perhaps this is just a strategy to do something different and thus, motivate the learner?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
11.14.09.JD: Might you provide a template or checklist for how to create an effective logo? Same with the marketing topic and the rest of the topics listed in this table?
Jackie Dobrovolny, 11/15/09,
11.14.09.JD: Yes! I wonder if you might charge for commenting on anything learners post to your Ning site?
Page 13: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

I have almost finalized all the informational content that will be covered under each category. However, I feel like I still need to work on incorporating more “Do” activities into the individual sections. The learner’s will be actively downloading documents and will have templates available for use under every category; however, I want to incorporate 2 or 3 more activities that have yet to be decided upon.

Design (part 1)Note: This section is due November 16.

Instructional Design Model and Learning Theory4. What is your theory, model or definition of learning? For example, some say learning is the

process of personalizing new information. Others say learning is the process of memorizing new information. What is your definition?

The theory that my EdWeb will be based on is the Constructivism/Interpretivism theory. The instruction they will receive will be embedded in the context they are in. For example, through instruction they will learn how to create a preschool proposal. They can immediately implement what they learn into creating their own proposal that they might need to submit to an educational committee or task force.

Another part of this theory is the “active process of constructing” rather than reading and memorizing facts. My learners will create their own budget, media (brochures, applications, handbooks etc.) and will design a physical layout of their future preschool. They will also learn through exploration. They will hold the responsibility of moving through the lessons and activities at their own pace and will have the freedom to select when to work through each unit. They will not have to complete the Units in a particular order which will give the learner additional freedom.

My EdWeb will be a “rich” learning environment. The learner will have access to a wide-variety of materials/resources including a list of common terms with definitions, easy-to-use templates, and a list of sites that they can use to obtain further information on unit topics. My website will also contain a task manager by using a Ning site to allow the learners to upload their finished products (ie. budget, proposal, Logo etc.) and acquire feedback from myself and other learners working through the EdWeb.

All of these attributes of this particular theory describe my definition of learning. I feel it is important to allow the learner to go at his/her pace learning the material as they see applicable. I think the learner should be in control of what he/she learns. If they are able to skip certain parts of the EdWeb because they already are an “expert” in that topic, they should have the ability to do so. This will give them more of an opportunity to focus on the units they need to learn. I also feel it is important to learn knowledge and then immediately apply it in the form of a “Do” activity. By doing this, it cements the concepts and aids the learner in retaining the knowledge that they previously learned.

5. Other than the CIVs and Horton’s Absorb, Do, Connect model, what, if any, other instructional design models do you plan to use, i.e., Kolb’s Model of Experiential Learning or Problem-Based Learning?

As of right now, I am only planning on using the CIV’s and Horton’s Absorb, Do, and Connect model.

6. What other instructional design issues are important or relevant to this project?

Another part of my instructional design will follow the criterion referenced assessment guide where time is the variable and score is the constant. Although the learners will have short multiple choice and True/False quizzes after each unit to check their immediate understanding of the material, the goal/focus of my EdWeb is to assist them in developing their own preschool which includes creating a variety of materials. I will be opening a Ning site to allow my learners to upload their finished products to obtain comments and suggestions from myself and other learners. They will be able to

Jackie Dobrovolny, 12/02/09,
Nice description of your theory of learning for this EdWeb.
Page 15: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

take this feedback and revise their documents and upload their final products. The process can continue until the learner is satisfied with their revised document and/or the feedback they receive. Their goal will be to fulfill the requirements for each document by meeting all goals or the objectives of a rubric and/or job aid. The EdWeb is self-paced so time is the variable. The learner can work through the EdWeb in a couple of weeks or years depending on their own specific situation.

Learning Activities1. How do you intend to integrate the “Learner Centered” Common Instructional Value into

your EdWeb? Provide at least three specific examples.

My goal for the EdWeb is to provide personalized instruction, a tool that will be relevant to my learners and also that gives my learners an opportunity for self-assessment after every unit. As they move through the lessons, it is my desire for them to be able to see how they can directly apply the material/concepts to their own situation whether that is creating a brand-new preschool or expanding a daycare to include a preschool program. I also want them to be able to immediately check their understanding of the concepts by participating in a variety of assessment methods.

Direct Implementation:

A. For my unit on licensing, I will make sure that my information matches the current Early Childhood standards/guidelines. By doing this, my learners will see that the information is relevant and will be able to immediately apply the material to their own licensing situation.

B. In the unit that teaches my learners how to create a start-up and monthly budget, my learners will be able to personalize the instruction by inputting their own figures into the multi-media calculator using only the categories they need. They will also be able to work towards a final figure that will satisfy their own financial situation whether that is a profit or a loss.

C. At the end of each unit, the learner will have the opportunity to participate in self-assessment. This will be done in a variety of different quiz formats including multiple choice, true/false and open ended questions (clicking on the link will reveal the answer). By seeing the results of their quiz, they will obtain immediate feedback on whether or not they excelled in their comprehension of the material.

2. How do you intend to integrate the “Social” Common Instructional Value into your EdWeb? Provide at least three specific examples.

The Social part of the EdWeb is important especially if the learner works through the EdWeb in a self-paced independent environment. To bring my virtual learners together, I will be creating a Ning site where they can get to know other learners who are taking the course, ask questions, and obtain valuable feedback from their peers and myself on the projects that they complete.

Direct Implementation:

A. Each learner will set-up a profile on the Ning site. During the set-up process, Ning allows the owner of the site to have the members answer questions. I will set-up 5 questions that will have to be answered before they can request membership. These questions will help those who join our site get to know one another. Once they join, they will be able to enjoy the social aspect of Ning (friend requests, writing on each other’s walls, sending private messages etc.).

And whether or not they need to go back and review something that confused them.
Jackie Dobrovolny, 12/02/09,
Nice!
Page 16: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

B. Each unit will have its own discussion post where learners can comment and ask questions. There will also be a discussion post that addresses general questions about the EdWeb and one that addresses technical issues. This will give my learners the opportunity to feel like they are learning in a community setting instead of on their own.

C. There will be a place where learners can submit their completed documents. They will be able to receive comments and suggestions from myself and other learners in our Ning community. They will have the option to revise their document and submit it for review as many times as they so desire until they are satisfied with the outcome.

3. How do you intend to integrate the “Contextual” Common Instructional Value into your EdWeb? Provide at least three specific examples.

Everything my learner does will be relevant to his/her context. Whether they are an early childhood educator starting a preschool or a daycare director looking to expand their business by adding a preschool program, they will have the tools they need to create a quality preschool. All of my activities and educational information will directly apply to these two situations.

Direct Implementation:

A. At the beginning of each unit, I will provide an overview that will summarize what will be taught in the lessons that follow. My learners will be able to see how the material relates to their own personal context.

B. As my learners participate in the discussion questions, they will discover other learners who may be in the same line of work (a preschool director, teacher or daycare worker). They will be able to discuss the lessons from their own vantage point with these individuals, further showing the learner that this EdWeb is contextually relevant.

C. At the end of each unit, my learners will have the opportunity to produce and manipulate templates according to their needs and situation. For example, a daycare might not need to create an entire preschool proposal if they are just adding a program to an already established daycare business. However, they might need to use part of the proposal template to justify to their business partners the benefits of adding a preschool. Every template that I will provide, will give the learner free reign in the production process.

4. How do you intend to integrate the “Active” Common Instructional Value into your EdWeb? Provide at least three specific examples.

My EdWeb will have a large number of hands-on activities. Personally, I feel that this is the best way to put what you learned into action. This category tends to cater to kinesthetic learners, or those who learn by “doing”. However, I feel that every type of learner (Visual, Auditory and/or Kinesthetic) benefits from “Do” activities.

Direct Implementation:

A. After my learners read the overview and take the multiple choice quiz on the unit titled “Proposal”, they will be asked to create their own proposal using a template that will be provided.

B. In the unit titled “Budget”, my learners will be able to actively use a multi-media profit/loss calculator that will help them work on financial figures for both a start-up and monthly budget.

C. In the unit titled “Physical Design”, my learners will be able to use an interactive room design simulator where they will have the opportunity to place furniture and/or create centers for their preschool layout.

5. How do you intend to integrate the “Supportive” Common Instructional Value into your EdWeb? Provide at least three specific examples.

Since my EdWeb is self-paced and most likely will be completed by an individual learner instead of a group, I feel obtaining support as they move through the lessons will be vital for their success. People from all walks of life and all ages desire to be a part of a community. That is one of the disadvantages of online learning; however, if the learner can feel like they are a part of a group, they are much more likely to perform well and complete the entire course.

Direct Implementation:

A. By joining the Ning site, the learner will be able to meet other learners who are working through the course. They can encourage each other to press on so that they will reach the goal of completion.

B. My learners will be able to participate in discussion posts that address general question and answers, technical issues, document submissions and also on each individual unit. This will help them to find the support they need.

C. My learners will also have access to my e-mail address. They will know and understand that I am available by e-mail anytime they need any assistance and/or support.

6. Complete the following chart to describe the activities you plan to include for each objective. In the first column, enter your objective. For each objective you may have one, two, three or more activities. Briefly describe those activities in the second column, entitled Activities. Put a checkmark in either the Absorb, Do, or Connect column for each activity. That is, each activity is an Absorb activity, or a Do activity or a Connect activity. Reference: Horton chapters 2, 3, and 4.

Note: Once you complete this table, with all of your objectives and all of your Absorb, Do, Connect activities, you basically have the foundation for your EdWeb.

7. What other issues related to learning activities are important or relevant to this project?

None at this time.

Tools AssessmentThe goal of this section is to help you select the best authoring tool for your EdWeb. In making that decision, consider the following questions. 1. If you are developing your EdWeb for an organization who already uses an authoring tool,

what are they using? Perhaps you should use that.

NA

2. What web development tools, if any, are you experienced using? Perhaps you should use that.

Jackie Dobrovolny, 12/02/09,
Is there a self-assessment quiz with this objective? I suggest you remove the type of self-assessment quiz you are going to provide with each objective. You may decide to have both true/false and multiple choice for each or some objectives.
Page 20: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

I have not used very many web development tools. I only have experience using Blogspot.com and Weebly.com. Blogspot.com does not allow you to add pages easily. To add pages, you have to link them to previous discussion posts. I have experience doing this; however, I would not want my EdWeb on this tool because it would limit my creativity.

Weebly.com is a wonderful site if you want to create a simple website. I used this website for a web-based work portfolio. However, it can be very frustrating. The tool itself is not reliable as they have technical issues weekly on their site. Also, you are very limited in the area of formatting text and pictures. If you are familiar with CSS, which I am not, you can upload your own template, but even with that option, I would not want my EdWeb to be on this tool.

3. What tool do you think you should learn to increase your marketability?

I think learning DreamWeaver would increase my marketability. My goal is to obtain a job either teaching or training in an E-Learning environment. I would also like to be able to assist with the design and implementation of the curriculum. This tool would assist me in meeting my career goals.

4. What tool will be the "best" to use in terms of the number of hours you have to develop your EdWeb? (i.e., Udutu will require less development time than DreamWeaver.)

I did look into using Udutu for my EdWeb; however, I felt like it would limit my ability to be creative when designing my EdWeb. Their layouts are very basic and the tool limits where you can add graphics and text. I would also be concerned that some of my multi-media activities would not work within this program.

Over Winter break, my goal is to learn DreamWeaver. I will be working through the Lynda.com training videos and I also purchased a textbook. If I have trouble learning the tool or if I feel like it will interfere with the time I have to create the material for my EdWeb, I will switch tools.

5. Review your instructional objectives and learning activities, described above. Are there any objectives and/or learning activities that may require special tools, e.g., a simulation or animation? If yes, list those objectives and/or learning activities here.

There are two multi-media tools/simulations that will require special attention. The first is an interactive profit/loss calculator that will be a part of the Budget unit. I want my learner to be able to use this calculator to input figures that pertain to both a start-up and monthly budget. I want them to be able to enter all of their information and then press “calculate” to get their result. The goal would be to not have a financial loss; however, I realize that when businesses (even educational) start, they might produce a loss the first year.

The second activity will be a room design simulator. I want to create something where my learners can design their preschool which would include arranging tables, desks, bookcases, “centers” (math, science, reading, art, house etc.) and an area for circle time. I have seen these room simulators on apartment websites. They seem to all look the same, so I am thinking they obtain the software/program from one company; however, my furniture is very specific so I would like to create my own if possible.

6. Given your answers to questions 1 through 5 in this section, what authoring tool do you think you will use for developing your EdWeb?

I will be using DreamWeaver; however, as I stated before, if I feel it is taking too much time away from the content, I will look at switching to something like Udutu.

Jackie Dobrovolny, 12/02/09,
Perhaps you start with Fireworks, develop a prototype that contains pieces of the kinds of things you want to do and then see what you think.
Jackie Dobrovolny, 12/02/09,
As you work with Dreamweaver over the winter break, please be thinking about these two activities. It would be good to see if you can create anything similar to what you want to do. It might also be good if you could search for tools that are set up to do these types of activities and see if you find anything that might work.
Page 21: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

Reflection Questions1. How do you feel about your EdWeb A&D document? Does it feel accurate and complete?

I feel like my document is accurate; however, I don’t feel it is complete. There are still some details that I need to finalize. I feel like I won’t be able to finalize those details until I start working on the EdWeb, and I see what my abilities will be when I am working with Fireworks and DreamWeaver.

2. What was the most challenging or difficult part of creating this document?

I think the most difficult part of creating this document was creating measurable objectives. I struggled with viewing this as a self-paced project. I also focused more on the knowledge I wanted them to obtain instead of focusing on the end result i.e. creating a proposal, budget etc. As an elementary teacher, our objectives were usually based on the knowledge/standards they need to obtain and then we often have a separate section where we list the activities and assessments (how we will measure if the objectives have been met). However, in the case of my EdWeb, the activities my learners will be participating in are the “end result” and therefore they are the measurable objectives.

3. What questions or concerns do you have about your EdWeb?

I am a little overwhelmed at learning the software tools. As I have worked with Fireworks and DreamWeaver for a small amount of time in the last week, I have discovered that they are definitely not user friendly. These tools are a lot like Adobe Photoshop. You can’t just open the tool and use it. You have to learn the tool through textbooks, guides and/or instructional videos. I am also concerned about the design portion of my EdWeb. That is not an area that I have a lot of experience with; however, I want my EdWeb to look professional and catch the interest of my future learners. I am concerned that my lack of experience in both the software tools and design will inhibit my ability to meet my goals for my EdWeb.

4. How are you feeling about developing your EdWeb, based on this document?

As I stated above, I am a bit overwhelmed. I feel like I know the material very well, but I do not have much experience with design. That will be the part that will take a lot of time. Along with familiarizing myself with Fireworks and DreamWeaver, I would also like to start working on the content of my EdWeb over Winter break. I know what needs to be included, so I feel like I can start putting together the subject matter. This will hopefully take some pressure off of next semester and allow me to focus more on design than development.

Executive SummaryYour name: Dawn DeNioDate: December 4, 2009

Title of this EdWeb: Preschool 101: Building a Quality Preschool One Block at a Time

Instructional setting: This EdWeb will educate potential preschool directors/teachers on how to create a successful preschool that will not only meet state licensing standards, but also assist educators in developing a preschool that will fulfill the expectations of parents and help give preschool age children a strong academic foundation. The EdWeb requires the learner to have access to a computer with internet access and will be completely self-paced allowing the learner to have control of his/her own education by determining when and how he/she will complete the course.Goals and outcomes: By the end of the course, the learner will have successfully completed each unit and therefore will have obtained knowledge on how to create and design every facet of a quality preschool program while also having had access to a wide variety of materials in the form of templates that can be used at his/her discretion.Learner needs and characteristics: The learners will be educators who have either an Associate’s or a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or daycare owners who have a desire to expand their business to include a preschool program. Most of my learners will be volunteers and therefore will be completing the EdWeb on their own time.Instructional content: The EdWeb will instruct learners how to create a quality preschool from beginning to end by addressing the following topics: Preschool Proposal, Budget, Logo, Media, Marketing, Physical Design, Purchasing Furniture and Supplies, Licensing, Curriculum and Hiring Staff. Each Unit will contain a tool to measure the learner’s comprehension of the material and instructions on how to access a support site to obtain feedback on the products they produce.Project management: My goal is to spend 20 hours per week creating the subject matter and design of my EdWeb from now until the end of the spring semester. I would like to prepare most of my content over winter break in order to be able to focus on the design of the EdWeb during IT5670. Tool assessment: My current plan is to use Fireworks to create the pages of my EdWeb and then transfer them into DreamWeaver. I will also need to use Flash for two of my interactive multi-media activities.Instructional design model: The theory that my EdWeb will be based on is the Constructivism/Interpretivism theory. The learners will participate in an “active process of constructing” rather than reading and memorizing facts and will learn through exploration. They will hold the responsibility of moving through the lessons and activities at their own pace and will have the freedom to select when to work through each unit. Therefore, I will follow a criterion referenced assessment guide where time is the variable and score is the constant. Learning activities: The learner activities will be learner centered, contextually relevant and will contain both social and active components. In each unit, I will incorporate activities that reach auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners. After the informational material is absorbed, the learners will reinforce what they have learned by directly applying their knowledge in a hands-on activity.

The colors I have chosen to use in my EdWeb will be bright and bold. My learners will most likely be preschool directors/teachers and daycare owners. In the educational field, especially in the early childhood and primary grade levels, primary colors are often used. That consists of the basic colors of the rainbow focusing on reds, blues and yellows. I used the tool by Kuler to decide what shades and which rainbow colors work together the best. My only concern is that the background color behind the text body will be too bright. This is something I will be asking in my formative evaluation.

I decided to not underline it and have changed it on my DP. I actually like it better not underlined. I am going to leave it white and bold for now, but I am going to work on maybe finding another color for all of my “Heading 1” headings.

C. Justification of your Absorb, Do, and Connect activitiesIn this section, briefly describe how your activities are examples of Horton’s Absorb, Do, and Connect activities. Please include one of each of these three types of activities in your Design Prototype. They do not need to be from the same objective. 1. Absorb: I chose to create my Absorb activity on creating a mission statement for a preschool proposal which is a section out of Unit 1. The text describes two perspectives that need to be considered when my learner is creating his/her mission statement that will be on his/her preschool proposal. According to William Horton, Absorb activities “consist of information and the actions learners take to extract and comprehend knowledge from that information.” Basically, he states that the “learner may be physically passive, yet mentally active” (Horton, 47). The type of Absorb activity I will use will be a presentation where my learner will have navigational control. This will allow my learner to have the power to move forward or backward through the slides depending on his/her comfort level of the material. According to William Horton, this will turn this presentation into “a more comprehensive learning experience” (Horton, 67).

2. Do: My Do activity is the Unit 5 True/False quiz that I am using to check my learner’s understanding on how to market a preschool. The official quiz will have 10 questions; however, because of space, I could only show examples of 4 of the questions that I created on this topic. Since my learners are volunteers, there will never be an actual official assessment/test over the material. I look at the quizzes that are at the end of some of my units as a practice activity. William Horton describes this type of practice activity as something that “helps learners strengthen and refine skills, knowledge, and attitudes by applying them and receiving feedback” (Horton, 106). By taking the quiz, my learner will be able to judge whether or not he/she learned the material to his/her satisfaction and will receive immediate feedback on whether or not he/she chose the correct answers.

3. Connect: My Connect activity is the first page my learner will see besides the Home page. My learner will access the page by clicking on the Overview link. On the page, my learner will read a brief overview of the website and then will watch a video. Within this video, I will share my story that describes both how I was selected as a preschool director and also my journey creating the preschool. I realize how this might be categorized as an Absorb activity; however, I will also intertwine the nine objectives of my EdWeb throughout my video and show my learner how this material is applicable to his/her situation. According to William Horton, he discusses how a learner might doubt that the material will be truly applicable to his/her needs (Horton, 169). The video will allow me the opportunity to convince my learner that the material will be useful and immediately relevant to the learner’s situation. I want to remove any doubts immediately, and I think this is the best way to create motivation and to put uncertainties to rest.

E. Formative Evaluation Plan 1. Formative Evaluation Process:

All of my evaluators currently live in Nebraska while I live in Arizona. I have received all of their e-mail addresses and will be sending both the Design Prototype and my Formative Evaluation questions through e-mail. They will have one week to complete the evaluation and return it to me. All of them have agreed to the deadline and are looking forward to participating in my project.

2. Formative Evaluation Participants:

Five people have agreed to be a part of the formative evaluation of my design prototype. They all come from a variety of different backgrounds. One of my evaluators has a degree in both elementary and early childhood education and is currently teaching first grade. The second evaluator has a degree in elementary education and is also teaching first grade. The third evaluator has a degree in elementary education and is teaching second grade; however, she spent many hours working with me in the preschool that I created. The fourth has an associate’s degree in early childhood and has worked with young children for years holding a variety of daycare positions. All of these individuals represent learners that possess a higher education degree and that would be qualified to create a preschool. The final evaluator holds a graphic design degree. I felt like it was important to have input from this type of individual as design is not my forte. I am hoping that he will be able to offer good insight on the overall design and layout of my EdWeb.

3. Formative Evaluation Questions:

a. On a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being “I strongly dislike it” and 5 being “I strongly like it”, how would you rate the layout of the Home page. If you selected anything less than 3, please tell me what you would change about the layout.

EdWeb A&D Update #1

1. Design Prototype formative evaluation: Please use the following table format for reporting the results of the Formative Evaluation of your Design Prototype and the revisions you plan to make based on this data.

Question 1 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4Graphic DesignerReview 5

On a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being “I strongly dislike it” and 5 being “I strongly like it”, how would you rate the layout of the Home page. If you selected anything less than 3, please tell me what you would change about the layout.

4 – it appears to be user friendly and easy to get around

4—I really like the font of the title. It may just be my computer but the text in blue is a bit hard to read. I like that it gives it dimension, but it seems a bit blurry. Love the picture and blocks—I read the title and then looked at the pics. I like the border; it

4, I really like the layout. If I was to be picky, and this is me being really picky, I might have chosen a different picture. I love the bright colors in this picture and for the most part, how the room is arranged, but as a teacher, I like to hide any cords or plug-ins that I have by putting a piece of furniture in front of it. It makes my room look more organized

5 4. Great job on the home page. You got all the alignments right on this. As far as I can tell, everything has purpose. The only thing I caught on this page was your photo. It’s a little pixilated. Maybe find a higher resolution photo. For Print, I recommend a 300 dpi image. It seems like your tag line is “One Block at a Time” it would be nice if some

and safer. how that stuck out more. But then again, maybe that specific line wasn’t intended for that.

Mean: 4.2

Since I sent out this formative evaluation to my evaluators, I have changed the white alphabet lettering on top of the yellow background to a darker yellow and have also enlarged the tagline. Both are a lot easier to read now. I am going to try to use Fireworks and/or Photoshop to erase the cord in the preschool photo. I will also take a look at the photo resolution and make sure that it does not look pixilated once it is uploaded onto a server.

Question 2 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4Graphic DesignerReview 5

On a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being “I strongly dislike it” and 5 being “I strongly like it”, how would you rate the layout of the Overview/Mission Statement/Unit 2 Quiz? If you selected anything less than 3, please tell me which page and what you would change about the layout.

4 – the layout was simple enough to be easy for almost anyone to use

4.5—I think the layout looks good. I think it has just enough wording and pics.

5, Good layout!

5 4. I’d kind of like to see the text in the “video” box center justified. Also I’ve always heard it is better to spell out your numbers (9= nine). Without seeing it in action, I am a little hesitant on the blue text on red background. However, I see that there is a drop shadow which helps.

Mean: 4.5

The text on the video box will not be there once I have the video finished. I am also going to work on the blue titles (my links) with the drop shadow. My evaluators mentioned more than once that these titles are hard to read.

Question 3 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4

Graphic DesignerReview 5

On a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being “It’s extremely hard to read” and 5 being “it’s easy to read”, how would you rate the impact of the red background with white text?

5 – it was very easy to read.

4—the red is a bit abrasive and text in blue is a bit blurry, but that could just be my computer. I do like the colors, red, blue, and yellow and the white font color. I’m just not sure about the red tint. I do like your fonts—they

5. I had no difficulty reading the text. I liked the red background!

5 5. Your white text on red is perfect. The clarity of the text works. Your font size looks to be about 12pt.

Jackie Dobrovolny, 06/09/10,
Dawn, I don’t think spelling out the numbers is true online, i.e., we are doing everything we can to reduce text.
Jackie Dobrovolny, 06/09/10,
Good decisions. The “problem” with pixilated photos is partly the result of whatever resolution your users have on their PC. So, I am running 1024 x 768 but once I install my new monitor, it will be 1280 x 1024 or perhaps higher and then your banner will look better on my system. Example: I can not see the letters in your alphabet border. It just looks like polka dots to me.

I will be changing the blue text (my links) as multiple evaluators mentioned that they are difficult to read.

Question 5 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4

Graphic DesignerReview 5

Do you think the photo of the 2 people holding puzzle pieces represented the text well? Yes/No If No, please explain why.

Yes Yes, it makes sense having two different perspectives matching with two people holding puzzle pieces. Having both makes the big picture come together.

I noticed that clip-art right away. I liked it. It goes well with the red background and perfect way of tying in the two perspectives for the mission statement.

I guess I didn’t make the connection until you asked this question…but now that I look back I get it!

Yes, Actually had those figures been any other colors, they would not have worked. Nice pick!

Median: Yes

Question 6 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4

Graphic DesignerReview 5

Do you think the pages are too busy? Yes/No If yes, please explain why.

No No, you did a good job of having just enough text, pictures, and blank spaces.

No They do have quite a few words on them, but it isn’t overwhelming!

The only page I had a problem with was the one with the “video” in it. Again, I think if you center justify that

text, you’ll be fine.

Median: No

None

Question 7 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4

Graphic DesignerReview 5

Do the headings need to be in different colors other than white? Yes/No If yes, please explain why.

No, the different font sets them apart – the white is easy to read, another color might not be as easy to see.

At first I thought yes, but after looking at it I don’t think so. Adding another color may just add more busyness to the pages. I think the font and size gives it enough distinction. Having all text in white keeps it clean.

I don’t think so. I could easily tell the difference between the headings and the rest of the text. I think if you would change the heading color, then the pages might look too busy. However, I do like how the word “Welcome”, on the first page, matches the text color of the “Home, Overview, Units, and Contact” tabs. Try that color for the Headings and see what you think. I still think white would be the best because you really want the “Home, Overview, Units, and Contact” tabs to be different and stand out.

Possibly, so it stands out more.

It looks like you have bolded the headings. I think that works for this. Once you begin to introduce too many colors the layout does become too busy.

Median: No

I tried changing the headings to a different color and it looked too busy. I think I will just use the size and the style (bold) to make them stand out.

Question 8 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4Graphic DesignerReview 5

Do you think the picture of the marketing/strategy sign fits the content of the quiz? Yes/No If No, please explain why.

Yes – makes sense to me

Yes, because few of the questions ask about the marketing aspect of the preschool. The other questions not on the sample page may ask questions about the strategy.

Honestly, when I looked over your pages a second time, this picture did catch me off guard (maybe not the right word). Something about it just seemed off. This is hard though because the words in the picture do describe what you are quizzing the reader about. Are the other 6 questions, that I didn’t see, talking mainly about the brochure? Maybe you can still use the words “Marketing

Yes! The content of the picture fits, however, the picture doesn’t. A big no no in design is never put red and green in the same design. (unless its Christmas). The colors cause a clash.

Strategy”, but fit it into a picture of a sample brochure. I don’t know though, I have never designed a web-page.

Median: Yes

I am not sure whether or not I will change the picture. The majority of my evaluators said that it fit; however, I might use something else. I can see both reviewer 3 and the graphic designer’s point. In fact, I had never thought about the concept of not mixing red and green. That is definitely something to consider.

Question 9 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4

Graphic DesignerReview 5

On a scale of 1 being “I strongly like it” and 5 being “I strongly dislike it”, how would rate the sample website pages as a whole? If you selected anything less than 3, please tell me why and what you would change.

4 – it looks good

4—I think it gave a good representation of the website. I would love to see the whole thing, when it’s finished.

5 5 4. Overall its well executed. A few minor changes and you’ll be great. Nice job Dawn!

Mean: 4.4

I am going to work on some of the changes I listed above.

Question 10 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4Graphic DesignerReview 5

What is one thing you like about the design/layout of the pages?

The overall layout was good and easy to use, your fonts, colors, and pictures all make sense and make it easy to read. It seems to be easy and friendly even for people who aren’t used to doing things online.

I liked that everything is symmetrical and in its place. This made it easier to keep reading.

It is easy to read and organized. I thought the words were well written too.

The language you used it easy to read and I like all of the interactive pieces.

Your opening page “packs a punch”. It’s a strong opening and you set the standard for the rest of the design.

change the blue text font so it wasn’t as blurry. I think the red may be too abrasive and could keep people from wanting to keep reading and clicking.

would love to see the finished product! :D

I almost wish I could see the white letters a little better. It’s a fun addition to the design. Also, it seems that the blocks on the front page are a little out of perspective. However, it’s late in the day and I may be seeing things.

Mean: NA

I do not think I will change the red background. I might play with the shade, but only one person mentioned it. I will be working on the blue text (“Welcome” and my links). As I mentioned above, I have already corrected the alphabet lettering on top of the yellow background by making it a darker yellow. It is much easier to read.

2. Style Guide issues Describe or exemplify any icons you plan to use throughout your EdWeb, e.g., a

“print” icon if you want students to print a handout or job aid or a “Do” icon for when you want students to practice or “do” something.

The first set of icons that I will use in my EdWeb will help my learner identify what they lesson they are working on. As part of my advance organizer, I have assigned each unit a colored shape. I will place a small version of the colored shape on each page in the right corner. This will be a way to connect my advance organizer to every page within a unit in my EdWeb.

Another icon I will use is the PDF icon. Since my job aids will have a lot of screen shots, I don’t necessarily want to force my learner to print them out. I want that to be an option. Hopefully, I can upload a PDF file via DreamWeaver and my learner can click on the link/icon and the title to download it to their computer. I am in the process of researching how to do this.

At this time, these are the only two icons I will be using throughout my EdWeb besides the normal navigation buttons. Since my learner is a volunteer and he/she will have the option of completing the assignments as he/she goes through the lessons or at the end of each unit, I will not include a “Do” icon. I am debating on creating a quiz icon; however, I have not decided on whether or not I will include it.

Links: Are you going to provide the URL or are you going to just link to the site from a few words in the text?

All of my links will be defined by a few words of text if they are in the body of a paragraph. However, there are three sections that have a number of links listed where I will just give the URL. The first is an outside reading activity of 4 articles on the topic of creating a business logo. The second is a list of preschool curriculums that are available to purchase, and the third is a list of resources that my learner can use to create his/her own curriculum. I think for these types of situations giving the URL makes more sense.

Describe and/or exemplify other common elements you plan to use throughout your EdWeb.

On every page, I will include the header and footer. The header will contain my title/subtitle on a red rectangular background and also the alphabet border. The footer will contain just the alphabet border. Another common element I will have on each page on the left will be the main links: Home, Overview, Units and Contact. There will also be the navigational elements in the lower right corner. Depending on what page the learner is on, he/she might see just the word

“next” with the button, the words “back” and “next” with the coordinating buttons or just the word “back” with the button.

3. Advance organizer: Provide the image, chart, or visual and a description of how that image may change as you present it at the end and/or beginning of each objective.

I will be using the image below as my advance organizer. I have included two pictures. The first picture is what the learner will see when he/she arrives at this page. The second will be what the learner will see when he/she rolls over the image. The way I have my EdWeb arranged is that on my home page there is a tab titled “Units”. By clicking on that title, my learner will be directed to my advance organizer. From here, he/she will be able to study my advance organizer and then also click on the individual shapes to access the material of that specific unit.

Once my learner clicks on the shape, he/she will go to the first page of the unit. This first page will be a picture of the advance organizer again; however all of the units will have a dark shadow over them except for the unit he/she selected. The unit he/she selected will have round “light” surrounding the shape (a spotlight effect).

As the learner works through the material, he/she will know what unit he/she is studying by visually seeing a small version of the shape taken from the advance organizer in the corner of the page. This will create continuity by bringing together the advance organizer, the material and the physical design of the website.

Once the learner has completed the unit and arrives at the last page, the learner will see my advance organizer again. The other units will have a dark shadow over the top and the unit they just completed will have a round “light” surrounding the shape (a spotlight effect). However, this time, there will be a black checkmark over the top of the shape signaling to the learner that they are finished.

Question 3 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4 Reviewer 53. Did you know what you were supposed to do on each page? If not, what page(s) confused you?

On page 19 you don’t actually have to “click” on the clouds, just roll over and the info shows up, I thought that there may be more if I clicked since you said to click on the cloud to see the example.

Sorry Dawn I know we are supposed to critique your website, but I don't have a whole lot of suggestions. You would have to have very little computer experience and knowledge to not be able to figure out what you are supposed to do on each page.

For the most part, yes. The only minor problem I had was figuring out that there were “back” and “next” buttons at the bottom of the page. I’m sure most people would figure this out easily, but is it possible to be able to view the entire page without having to scroll down to see the bottom?

It was very clear on direction, so I had no trouble knowing where to go, or do on each page.

Yes!

Mean [average] for Likert scale questions:NARevisions you will make to your EdWeb based on this data.I fixed the wording on page 19. I also went through each page and adjusted the formatting and the images and also added new pages, so my learners will not have to scroll as much. On most of the pages, my learner will be able to see the navigation buttons without having to make any adjustments.

Mean [average] for Likert scale questions:NARevisions you will make to your EdWeb based on this data.At this time, I will not be making any revisions. I found it interesting that one learner said to condense the material, and one said I could go into more depth on the topics. So, to me, those two comments cancel each other out, and I will not be changing the length of the content as I am satisfied with its current status.

Question 5 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4 Reviewer 55. What did you think of the visuals on the following pages? Did they help you understand the content? I replaced this image with an image of a stack of papers labeled “Preschool Proposal”.2. I made this more relevant to the content as I put a writing activity on this page.3. I added a title to this page.4. I decided to keep the image and just do a screenshot of a portion of the items. Then, I explained to my learner that at the end of the unit they will have the opportunity to download a sample preschool proposal that will contain full version.5. This was more of a cute decoration than a dual coding image. However, I am going to see if I can find anything that will be more appropriate to replace it with.6. Question 8 Reviewer 1 Reviewer 2 Reviewer 3 Reviewer 4 Reviewer 5What was one thing you would change about this course (design, content, layout or navigation)?

If there is a possible way to let the viewer go to a particular page instead of having to click the next or back arrow that would be nice. Like if I read through the whole thing and knew I wanted to review the part about state standards and I knew it was near the middle, it would be annoying to have to click back til I found it. If I could instead click on like number 12 and find it from there it would be easier. It was tedious having to scroll and click to get to certain pages to see the different graphics.

The main thing I would change about the course would be the design. The bright red was good for the first page but you really need to incorporate some blue and green backgrounds as well. Unless each Unit had it's own identifying color....At first I found the quiz questions a waste of time, but as I read through them, the questions you picked were relevant to make sure the person is truly understanding the main points. Some people may find them annoying like you are asking a 1st grader.

Maybe have a link to the PDF file you mention on your conclusion page be available on each major section, with the portion of your proposal being highlighted. For example, on the “Budged” section, have a link to your proposal with the Budget portion highlighted; on the “Centers” section, have a link to the same proposal, this time with the Centers section highlighted.

NA You could maybe include some examples of centers or include good internet sites that have center ideas?

Mean [average] for Likert scale questions:NARevisions you will make to your EdWeb based on this data.I will comment on each of the reviewers suggestions:Reviewer 1: I can understand this learner’s frustration about the navigation and not being able to jump to a certain section of the unit. I am thinking of trying to implement a menu of some kind; however, currently, the way my EdWeb is set-up, I am not sure how I am going to add that function. My advance organizer is the doorway to my units, so adding a pull down menu in the left column would allow my learner to skip the advance organizer. That is something I do not want to happen. I could maybe add it to the pages after my advance organizer, but I am still deciding. I need to brain storm how to implement this suggestion, and it may not get fixed by the end of this class.Reviewer 2: I think it is important to have consistency as the learner goes from page to page. By changing background colors, I feel it would subtract from the content and also interrupt my color scheme. She is the only who said anything about the red color, so I am going to leave it as is.Reviewer 3: On the page that addresses the budget, I have added a sentence that explains to my learner that at the end of the unit they will be able to download a sample preschool proposal that will contain a full version of the projected operating budget. Also, on the page that addresses “Centers”, my learners will now know that they will be able to see that at on the PDF file also.Reviewer 4: NA

Page 43: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

Reviewer 5: I will cover centers in another unit including teaching my leaner what they are and how they impact education and also providing my learner with links to companies where they can purchase center materials.

2. Reading Level Assessment.

3. Reflections on the results of your Readability Statistics. What did you learn? What revisions, if any, do you plan to make?

I was really happy with my readability statistics. My passive sentence percentage is 10%, and I have a Flesch Reading Ease of 74.7. When I looked into what this means, it said the Flesch Reading Ease measures the average number of syllables per word and words per second. It also said the average score is 60 to 70. I was above average, so I feel confident that my readers will be able to understand my content.

The second part of the readability statistics is the Flesch-Kincaid Level Test. My paragraph registered at a 6.8. They want us to be between 7.0 and 8.0. I am below that threshold, but it is probably because of the “down to earth” tone I wanted to use with my readers. I didn’t want this to be a formal setting. I wanted them to feel that the material was personable.

At this time, I will not be making any changes. I am close enough to the grade level threshold and when I checked other paragraphs, I met the goal. In the future, if I have time, I will go back and look at more paragraphs in every unit to see where my overall EdWeb stands as far as meeting the goals for readability statistics.

5. Reflections on the distribution of images in your EdWeb. How many images do you have in each category? How do you feel about that distribution? What changes, if any, do plan to make to your images? Note: You do not have to have images in each category and you do not have to have an even distribution of images by category.

I selected many images to be a part of both the “Overview” section and Unit 1. I have 25 representational images, 6 decorative images, 3 organizational images and 2 navigational images. For the content I created, I feel that it was appropriate to have a large quantity of representational images. I believe that it helps my readers understand the material and also helps them to remember the content as they move through the unit.

Although I am happy with most of my images, there are a couple I would like to change. One or two of my evaluators rated these images as a category 3 and/or commented that they did not help them understand the content or made it somewhat confusing. One of the pictures that I am going to change is the picture of the balloons on page 39. I am going to try and find a picture of a preschool with open doors or something that helps my learner

Page 49: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

understand that they are one more step closer to opening day. The other image that I might change is the picture of the phone with a face on it which is on page 36. I don’t think this enhances the content and might even distract from it.

All in all, I feel that my image selections were appropriate and enhanced my learner’s understanding of the material. I know that developing a course like this is an iterative process and as I find better images in the future, my current ones might be replaced.

7. ADA Accessibility.

I used DreamWeaver and will make my comments below.

8. Reflections on ADA. What did you learn about ADA? What changes, if any, do you plan to make to your EdWeb?

At this point, my EdWeb is complete to the point in which I have all of the pages finished. As I ran the report, I had a large number of line items come up. However, none were broken links, missing ALT titles or anything else I felt was worth fixing for this project. I was amazed at how many errors it found; however, I have to admit that I did not know what most of them meant even after clicking on the “more information” section. I now realize that meeting ADA standards of accessibility would take a lot of time. If I were creating this website for a company or educational system, I would definitely want to build in extra time (days) to research and fix anything this report highlighted.

Page 51: Preschool 101 Analysis and Design Document

9. Peer Review. What revisions did you make (or do you plan to make) to your EdWeb based on the Peer Review another student conducted on your site?

I met with Kathy on July 5, 2010. I really enjoyed her feedback. Kathy commented that scrolling on each page was overwhelming. I agreed with her, so I revised each page as much as I could to reduce the amount my learner will have to scroll. I was unable to altar some of the pages because I couldn’t split up the information. For example, my advance organizer is very large. It has to be this size because of the rollover effect. I had to make sure my learner could read the type within each rectangle when he/she rolled over each shape.

Another example of not being able to reduce the size of a page is when the content is in the form of a bulleted list. I felt like splitting up a bulleted list would not be appropriate. I want to make sure my learner grasps the main idea of each page before moving on. I feel it would be confusing or some of the content may be lost if I split the information.

10.Future plans for your EdWeb. After IT5670, what are your plans for your EdWeb? What content might you still need to add? What instructional strategies, such as simulations, animations, or self-assessment questions, do you need to add? When do you plan to implement your EdWeb with “real” students?

After IT5670, I have many plans for my EdWeb. Some of these things will happen more quickly than others. First, I need to finish Units 3-9. My current plan is to work on more of my units in August. I will continue to work on them throughout the semester as time allows, and my goal is to be finished by the end of winter break. In IT5680, I will work on all of the interactive portions of my EdWeb including the quizzes, a preschool operating budget calculator for Unit 2, and a room design simulator for Unit 6.

At this point, I am not sure when and if “real” students will use my EdWeb. I have thought about turning it into a business of some kind by posting it to the internet and password protecting the material down to a certain level; however, there would need to be some changes to my images and material. Also, I would have to make a monetary investment as I would have to pay to replace some of my images, find a website hosting service and pay their fees, and also pay for my “Preschool 101” Ning site as that company is now charging for their services. In addition, I am not sure what kind of interest I would have in this type of course, and if the operating costs would balance with the income that I would receive. It’s a lot to think about!
