*** PLEASE SEE NEXT PAGE *** Here are some other activities that are not required, but are highly suggested. This week we planned a unit around “yard” for the letter Yy. Here are some ways to learn at home:

LETTER Y ACTIVITIES

● Watch letter Yy songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZC3a6GnwTo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yua6LaU--go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8PdL8ydI28 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWJSE_p0akY&list=RDTWJSE_p0akY&start_radio=1

● Practice making the sound of Yy and create a y collage by cutting out pictures or words from magazines, newspapers, or junk mail that contain y (or the letter itself). Glue them onto a sheet of paper.

● Use play-doh, legos, blocks, or other materials (be creative) to form the letter.

YARD ACTIVITIES

● Listen to the story When Spring Comes: ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IMQguIVLL4 ➢ What happens when spring comes? ➢ What do you like about spring? What don’t you like about spring? ➢ Go into your yard or go for a walk around your neighborhood. Can you find any

signs of spring?

● Listen to the story Backyard Bugs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1-sd9wkzrE ➢ Which bug has spots? ➢ Which bug lives in a hive? ➢ Which bug rubs its wings together to make a chirping sound? ➢ What does a caterpillar turn into? ➢ What kind of bugs do you see when you go outside?

● Listen to the story Plant the Tiny Seed:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHRDM5nb8Ks ➢ What do the seeds need to grow?

Page 4: PRESCHOOL E-LEARNING...Dec 05, 2019  · PRESCHOOL E-LEARNING Hello and welcome to e-learning! This is to be used during our school closing. Here are activities for Friday, May 8th

➢ What grows out of the seeds in this story? ➢ What kind of animals and insects visit the garden?

● Listen to the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY&t=7s

➢ Name some healthy foods that the caterpillar ate. ➢ Why did the caterpillar have a stomachache? ➢ How many leaves did he eat? ➢ At the end of the story, what did the caterpillar turn into?

● Watch this amazing video of a real caterpillar and see how it grows and changes!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVm5k99PnBk

● Watch this Mystery Science video about trees. https://mysteryscience.com/mini-lessons/biggest-tree?code=4d4ab28bde6ee9598871b81ff33c5357#slide-id-7405

● Listen and dance along to this song about birds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaARSaHa5GA

● Make a kite to fly on a nice, windy day. Here are two options.

Tie some yarn or string onto the handles of a plastic bag to create a loop. Make sure there are no holes in it. All done - nice and easy!

This one requires more materials but it’s neat. Here’s a link with the directions. https://www.somewhatsimple.com/paper-bag-kites/

● Create your own bird nest! If you don’t have feathers at home, just use paper. Here is the link with the directions. https://www.babiestobookworms.com/2017/03/30/when-will-it-be-spring/

● Make a bird feeder and then spend some time watching and observing them as they flock to it for lunch! Here are two ideas.

● Here are two options to make a beautiful butterfly.

Coffee filter butterflies - so cool! We recommend using a spray bottle for the water. The children love those. Here is a link with directions. https://masandpas.com/coffee-filter-butterflies-flit-away/ Here is a link with a video that shows you how to make a handprint butterfly. Try to have your child do as much as the cutting and decorating as possible. https://pin.it/HCLci3c

● Let’s paint some rocks! Try to find smooth ones but any rock will do. Wash them off and allow time to dry. Acrylic paint is recommended but use what you have. You can paint on faces like these or paint them however you please. Use them as paperweights or decorations. Surprise a friend or relative by safely leaving one outside their front door.

Here’s a link with lots of other neat ideas too. https://www.ilovepaintedrocks.com/2017/10/best-easy-rock-painting-projects-tutorials-beginners.html

● Here’s a simple way to create some indoor flowers. Cut the end of the cardboard roll to resemble petals (parents you may want to do this part yourself). Dip them into paint and press onto the paper. You may want to allow the paint to dry between colors.

● Children love planting seeds and watching them grow. Here’s a great way to allow them to see exactly what happens to that seed. The beans work very well. If you don’t have a clear plastic cup, a sandwich bag with a moist paper towel inside works too. Tape it to a sunny window.

FYI the children will expect the seeds to start growing immediately after watering it. :)

● Let’s play! Go outside and get some fresh air for these activities.

- Bounce a ball and count how many times it bounces. - Play catch and count how many times you catch the ball. - Jump rope and count how many times you jump OR say the alphabet as you are

jumping. Can you make it all the way to z? - Use sidewalk chalk to practice writing numbers, letters or sight words (explorers).

Practice drawing shapes as well. - Blow bubbles and count how many you can pop.

● Print up these spring pattern strips to practice finishing simple patterns. If you make multiple copies of the last page, you can use those flowers to create your own patterns. https://teachingmama.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Flower-Pattern-Strips.pdf

Here are some other ways to keep practicing the skills we have been working on.

LETTERS: All students can continue practicing the letters learned thus far by using flashcards. Name the letter, produce the sound, and identify something that begins with each letter.

This is a fun and simple activity that most children love because it involves tape! Write the letters of the alphabet on a blank sheet of paper as well as on small pieces of tape (perhaps use painters tape if you plan to stick them to the wall). Have your child find matches and place the matching tape letter over the paper letter. For the three year olds, use only the letters in their names. For the four year olds, you can write the uppercase letters on the tape and lowercase letters on the paper. NUMBERS: Use number flashcards to practice numbers 0-10 (3 year olds) or 0-20 (4 year olds). Also practice counting and creating sets of objects. Print the spring color by number (scroll down) and color. NAME WRITING: Practice tracing and writing your first name (3 year olds) or first and last name (4 year olds). Print your own practice sheets using this link. https://www.handwritingworksheets.com/ Create this name craft. You can draw the clouds and raindrops onto blue and white paper. Have your child cut them out (you can assist if necessary). Your child can write his/her name on the cloud and the letters onto the raindrops. Attach the raindrops to the cloud by gluing or taping yarn to the back.

RHYMING WORDS: Listen to this song about weather: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfAB4BXSHOA Can you think of words that rhyme with the following weather words: sun, sunny, rain, snow, wind, hot, cold? EXPLORERS (4 year olds) Reading Listen to the book Chameleon’s Colors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JJ-qtsuD1o Discuss the following questions: ➢ Who are the characters in the story? ➢ Where does the story take place (setting)? ➢ At the beginning, chameleon complained that nobody ever sees him. Why don’t they? ➢ What did the chameleon use to make his paint? ➢ What is the problem in this story? ➢ What is the solution (how was the problem solved)?

Watch this video of a real chameleon changing color (it’s sped up): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9ecX8PRPSw Response: Chameleon wants to paint you! Draw a picture of what you would look like. Make sure you color it or even paint it. Write a sentence to describe your picture. An adult can write it for you to copy. Here’s a writing template that you may want to use. http://teachersmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Preschool-Journals.jpg

Review the sight words, which can be found below. Making flashcards is a good way to practice. Some other ways to practice include: writing them on whiteboards or chalkboards, typing them out on the computer, going on a sight word scavenger hunt (write the words on post-it notes and hide them around the house; when your child finds a word, he/she should copy it onto a piece of paper). New Sight Words: my, help Continue to Practice: I, me, you, find, is, said, and, play, up, not, a, little, we, away, one, two, three, where, see, down, for, it, here, in, the, red, yellow, blue, to, come, big, make, go, look Math: Continue our unit on Measurement. Our focus will be to learn to measure how tall or short items are using non standard units of measurement and to compare units of measurement. Begin by finding two items to measure with. One of the items should be the item you used last week. For example you could use a handful of legos, links, cubes, blocks, beans, ect. Small items work well. Next, gather 4 objects to measure like a pencil, marker, toy, piece of paper, etc. Anything works! Remind your child how to measure the length of items. Begin by measuring an item of your choice with the unit of measurement used last week. Then measure the item with the other unit of measurement. Make sure that there are no spaces in between the items you are using to measure. Count how many legos, links, cubes, blocks, beans, ect., that you used. Which unit of measurement used more? For example, did you use more legos or blocks? Why? Then measure a different item together using one unit of measurement first and then the other. Make sure that there are no spaces in between the items you are using to measure. Count how many legos, links, cubes, blocks, beans, ect., that you used. Which unit of measurement used more? Why? Have your child repeat the process with the remaining items and help as needed. TINKER TIME (3 year olds) The tinkerers have been working on tracing and copying their first names as well as identifying the letters in their names. They have also been working on identifying colors and shapes such as circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, heart, star, and diamond. They can practice drawing shapes at home. They should continue to work on their fine motor skills by tracing, coloring, drawing, cutting, and gluing each day.
