Festival of the See of Saint Mark2010

My Dear Sons and Daughters of the Church,

We are very excited that you are joining the Festival of the See Saint

Mark. His Holiness Pope Shenouda is very proud of you. Do you

know how many people are part of this Festival? A quarter of a

million boys and girls - that is, thousands of thousands - a very

large number!

The beauty of this festival is that you will memorize the hymns of

the Church. This will keep you inside the Church, understanding the

Church, understanding the Liturgy, and understanding its words and its

beautiful meanings. When you understand these things and know the hymns, you will

raise your hearts to the Lord and pray with Abouna (the priest) and the chanters (the

deacons).

Once, my friend asked, “Do you see George over here?” “Yes,” I replied, “What about

him?” My friend told me, “He is in Kindergarten and has memorized Agios.” I looked

at George and asked him, “Really?” George replied, “Yes.” So I told him, “Go and

ahead and say it.” George sang it for me in a cute way and I told him, “Bravo! You’re

very clever.” Afterward George’s father told me, “Not only has he memorized Agios,

but, more importantly, when we attended the Liturgy, George found the deacons

chanting Agios and tugged on my jacket saying, ‘Daddy, daddy, I know this Agios that

they are singing!’ So I encouraged him to sing with the deacons and he started singing

with them.”

The hymns keep us living with the Church and in it, with our Lord Jesus Christ, and

our Mother the Virgin Saint Mary, and all the saints. God willing, may you memorize

the hymns and be good boys and girls, and glorify His name everywhere.

The Hymn of Pen[oic (our Lord) for the Feast of Nativity

The melody of this hymn is called Mohayer in Arabic.

There are other hymns chanted in this same melody for different

occasions throughout the year. The first word of these hymns is

either Pen[oic (our Lord) or Pa[oic (my Lord). Sometimes these

hymns are generally named Aspmasmos Meghaloo (acpacmoc

megalou), meaning ‘the great greeting.’

This hymn is chanted before the Thrice-Holy (Trisagion) Hymn

(Agioc) during the Divine Liturgy.
