Public Space AwardRecognizes a public space that helps build the community
Green Tree Community Garden The Green Tree Community Garden is a flourishing park where neighbors and families meet and build community in the Haven-woods neighborhood. Residents care for the garden, infusing it with energy from the surrounding community. The Green Tree Community Garden hosts events to help ignite residents during the summer season.

Johnsons Park Revitalization At 11.5 acres, Johnsons Park is the largest green space in Lindsay Heights. Recognizing untapped potential, the Center for Resilient Cities worked with the Johnsons Park Neighborhood Association and local residents to bolster safety and health outcomes. This revitalization plan helped establish the park as a much needed destination for families and community organizations.

Journey House Community Garden The Journey House Community Garden, located in Clarke Square, was designed as a beautiful, safe place where neighbors could meet and grow their own food. The result is a thriving garden that features 24 raised-beds tended by neighborhood families and Longfellow students. Current plans for improvement include a multi-year neighborhood food systems initiative.

Journey House
City on a Hill Located on Milwaukee’s near west side, City on a Hill was estab-lished to help meet the needs of the community. Monthly, they provide health services for over 300 low-income adults, including physician visits, eye exams, medications and physical therapy. Hundreds of youth attend their Youth Center, receiving academic support, mentoring and work training.

Cornerstone Award Recognizes an organization for their commitment and effectiveness over time
Silver Spring Neighborhood Center Founded in 1958, the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center is impacting lives in the Westlawn community through a full array of programs for every generation. A childcare center, afterschool programs, compet-itive sports leagues, and teen programs help families succeed. Adult education, on-site healthcare, a food pantry, and job training center add to a full complement of support for all ages.

Milwaukee Christian CenterFor nearly a century, Milwaukee Christian Center (MCC) has provided innovative programs to meet the needs of Milwaukee’s south side immigrant and low-income families. Today, MCC operates many programs including an Emergency Food Pantry, senior programs, job training for at-risk youth, and Violence Free Zones at five area high schools.

Diane De La Santos Diane De La Santos began her career at La Casa De Esperanza in Waukesha. In 2003, Diane became executive director of City on a Hill, a fledgling nonprofit working to alleviate chronic poverty on the near west side. She has brought innovative services, evidence- based programs and the life changing power of the Gospel to the central city.

Darryl Johnson A quiet, strong leader, Darryl Johnson has a life-long personal commitment to improving Milwaukee’s neighborhoods. In 2003, Darryl became executive director of the Riverworks Economic Development Corporation, located in the Harambee neighborhood. Riverworks serves youth, fosters economic development, cultivates public space, engages residents, and promotes community safety.

Gretchen Mead Rooted in her rural heritage and a passion for community, Gretchen Mead has sparked a movement for building healthy, resilient com-munities. Gretchen helped seed the first Great Milwaukee Victory Garden Blitz, empowering people to grow their own healthy foods. Under her leadership, the Victory Garden Initiative has bloomed, and continues to grow each year.

Trail Blazer AwardRecognizes an innovative approach to a community problem
Fill the Gaps Initiative, Arts@Large in partnership with Milwaukee Public SchoolsRecognizing a need for certified art and music teachers, Arts@Large and MPS administrators quickly developed the Fill the Gaps initiative. In just four months, artists were trained and matched to schools, with 3,000 students benefitting from programs specifically tailored to the needs of each school.

Historic Wally Schmidt Tavern Redevelopment Fix Development & Jeremy Davis This trailblazing model of real estate development was inspired and led by residents of the 53206 zip code. The building houses seven small black- or women-owned businesses, including The Tandem restaurant which hires local residents. The Wally Schmidt Tavern project is socially just, environmentally-sustainable and culturally-rich.

Home Improvement Matching Grants, Layton Boulevard West Neighbors Seeing a need for home reconstruction, LBWN Home Improvement Matching Grants have facilitated improvements to 271 homes with a total investment of close to a million dollars. In 2013, the program expanded into Clarke Square, with over $500,000 invested in 85 projects. This successful program is expanding the total number of grants, and offering incentives to cluster home improvements.

Milwaukee TechForce Training Center, Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee Milwaukee TechForce Training Center has transformed a historic building into a high-tech pipeline connecting the community to educational opportunities — from pre-GED classes to job training for high growth technology fields. Within walking distance of low-income households, the facility features state-of-the-art classrooms and teaching technology.
