In German, there are two words for because:

• Denn• Weil

Look at the example sentences. What do you notice?

Ich mag Deutsch, weil es interessant ist.Ich mag Deutsch denn es ist interessant.

Ich hasse Biologie, weil es schwierig ist.Ich hasse Biologie, denn es ist schwierig.

Ich mag Mathe. Ich finde es ist lustig, weil die Lehrerin sehr nett ist.Ich mag Mathe. Ich finde es ist lustig denn die Lehrerin ist sehrnett.

Weil is called a VTE word. This means it sends the verb to the end of the sentence. Let’s look at these sentences again, can you identify the verbs in them?

Ich mag Deutsch, weil es interessant ist.Ich mag Deutsch denn es ist interessant.

Ich hasse Biologie, weil es schwierig ist.Ich hasse Biologie, denn es ist schwierig.

You should have noticed:

Weil is called a VTE word. This means it sends the verb to the end of the sentence.

Denn does not send the verb to the end. With denn, the verb comes straight after the subject of the sentence.
