North & South, medieval art exhibition

25 October 2019 – 26 January 2020, Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht

From 25 October 2019 to 26 January 2020, Museum Catharijneconvent will present “North & South”, an exhibition of medieval art with well-preserved works from both the far North and South of Europe. In collaboration with the Episcopal Museum of Vic (Spain), the Museum of the University of Bergen (Norway), the Museum of Cultural History (University of Oslo, Norway) and the Archbishop's Palace Museum of Trondheim (Norway), extremely rare altar decorations from the 12th to the 14th centuries will be reunited for the first time in Utrecht. Most of these works have never left the country due to their vulnerability. Separated by the Pyrenees in the South and the fjords in the North, they have been preserved in all their wealth, often in churches of small and remote villages. In central Europe, these pieces have not resisted the effects of, for example, iconoclasms and wars. Despite their miles away, the North and South collections show a surprising amount of similarities, something that indicates an enormous mobility of objects and cultural ideas at that time. More information can be found at the website of Museum Catharijneconvent.
