Thanks to the Program for the Internationalization of Spanish Culture (PICE) of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), several Spanish theatre companies will bring their shows to the Netherlands between January and March.

This year marks the ninth edition of Brandhaarden, a theatre festival organized by the Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA). It will take place from 28 January to 8 February 2020. The festival opens with Gran Bolero (January 28 and 29), by the Spanish choreographer Jesús Rubio Gamo, who created this show when he was in a dead end, simply obeying the rhythm of the music. The piece La Plaza can be seen a few days later (4 and 5 February). This play is a detailed portrait of the current generation in their 30s. It was created by the company El Conde de Torrefiel, founded in Barcelona by the Swiss-Spanish duo Tanya Beyeler and Pablo Gisbert. Their work focusses on the intersection between theatre, acting, choreography and visual arts. For more information on dates and schedules, please check ITA’s website.

Between March 23 and 29, the Grand Theater of Groningen will host a residency of the theater company La Tristura, that will rehearse those days in the theater and show part of its work to the public on March 29, when there will also be talks with the directors. La Tristura has been working in performing arts for more than 10 years. Now they are finalizing the details of Renacimiento, a piece built on the imaginary of the last 40 years in Spain: a brief history of our democracy. For more information, please check see the website of the Grand Theater of Groningen.

On February 21st, Literary Society De Witte, in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain and the Instituto Cervantes, will organize a concert performed by Dúo Bálder.

Self Hermans and Beatriz Pomés are the founders of Dúo Bálder, a musical project associated to the Museum of the University of Navarra and built around chamber music. The ensemble has its usual musicians but also collaborates with other national and international professionals.

The programme for this concert is called Spanish dances from yesterday and today. Traditional dances have always been a source of inspiration to compose: their rhythms, their melodies, the instruments or the structures of each dance have been very attractive elements for composers of classical music. This has been reflected at all times throughout history. The main characters of this program will be renowned composers of the Baroque period (Johann Sebastian Bach, Michel Blavet and Marin Marais) and two well-known composers from Navarra (Martín Zalba and Pablo Sarasate).

More information about the concert can be found at the website of the Instituto Cervantes (reservation must be made).
