The municipal waste management services in the historic centers.
Florence:
the paradox of an iper – used city
The case of Florence is emblematic of the "polar city “ of those cities
that, for the variety of functions it performs, acts as a focal point than the
surrounding area (central place).
In the historic center of Florence, the
problem is made more complex by a "hyper
use" due to the concentration of roles that
despite the decentralization plans, still
weigh significantly on the production of
waste and on the toilet holding the streets.

The municipal waste management services in the historic centers.
In its historical center are gathering over the political and
administrative activities typical of a regional capital, also
schools, institutions and Italian and foreign universities,
representatives of various kinds and all major activities
related to tourism.
The concentration of functions and their stratification characterize the city as
"unique", and for the exclusive nature of the offer, and for the complexity of
the urban model represented, difficult to compare with other cities. At the
same time the historic center of Florence can be defined as "... a place of
identification at the international level by being the Florence medieval
and Renaissance model for many European cities." (Bernhard Winkler:
"Project of urban mobility in the city of Florence ").
This fact must still be carried out with the dual aim of safeguarding both the
economic and environmental values, as well as those historical architecture,
which led UNESCO to add in the "World Heritage List“.

Quadrifoglio Spa, in the observance of the sustainability of the interventions in
terms of cost - benefits, always arises in order to pursue the quality of service
targets and the achievement of recycling standards, with an additional focus
on the relationship with architectural historical context of the historical center.
In that sense, finding full cooperation with the office of the City of Florence
Historic Centre World Heritage UNESCO, the company has identified, and
partly implemented, a series of projects that will, among others, a substantial
contribution to greater dignity and protection of the urban environment of the
historical center of Florence.

The municipal waste management services in the historic centers.
The problem of Florence is not the production of
waste itself, but the concentration of production
in spaces of reduced size and reduced usability,
for the high pedestrian and vehicle attendance.
The interesting fact to be analyzed is thus the
production of total waste in reference to the
spatial dimension, but even more so in reference
to the linear extension of the roads, where the
services, must necessarily be carried out.
Florence - castrum area: simulation
of the daily waste production in
relation to the linear extension of the
roads (almost 15 kg of Urban waste
per 10 meters of road)

The historic center of Florence In such a context, the adopted solution until the start of the new
project was the use of road waste bins, intended for unsorted waste, “bells” in
polyethylene for the "mixed materials" and collecting paper
and cardboard made with the method "door to door." But over time this
system has created problems both aesthetic impact, decoration and hygiene of
the urban area, is an inefficiency in the performance of separate collection.

Underground bins
In the historical center of Florence, the high concentration of economic
activities, the small size of the roads and the high number of tourists most of
the year, doesn’t allow to place an appropriate number of road bins for the
different waste fractions.
The integrated model of recycling for the city of Florence provides with the
following solutions:
12
In summary, the solution adopted for the
historical center of Florence, from 2008 to
the end of 2016, it has allowed to eliminate
672 waste bins, source of degradation,
abandonment and dirt, replace them with
only 45 underground stations, which are
monitored, cleaned and washed every
day, giving a significant contribution to the
maintenance of decorum of artistic,
architectural and historical peculiarities of
Unesco Site.
