James Joyce

James Joyce was one of the most important Irish writers and he was very popular in all the world in the 20th century.He was born in Dublin on 1882 and he died in Zurich on 1941.His most popular works are Ulysses, Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake.

Joyce was born to a lower-middle class family in Dublin, where he excelled as a student at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, then at University College, Dublin. In his early twenties he emigrated permanently to continental Europe, living in Trieste, Paris and Zurich. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional universe does not extend beyond Dublin, and is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies and friends from his time there; Ulysses in particular is set with precision in the streets and alleyways of the city.

It is one of the most influential works of de XX century and it is considered one of the most important works after Shakespeare.

The book consists of 18 chapters, each covering roughly one hour of the day, beginning around 8 a.m. and ending some time after 2 a.m. the following morning. Each chapter employs its own literary style, and parodies a specific episode in Homer's Odyssey. Furthermore, each chapter is associated with a specific colour, art or science, and bodily organ.

The Joyce Centre is the new home to highlights from the National Library’s 2004-2006 landmark James Joyce & Ulysses exhibition. Through interactive installations and three films, you may delve into the novel, its historical backdrop, its publishing controversies and learn more about Joyce's life. The Centre also hosts International Joyce, an exhibition originally organised by the Cultural Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland.
