The drivers of food insecurity
Foodsecurityathouseholdlevelisfundamentallydependentonpurchasingability*,andhenceontwofactors:1. Abilitytopayforfood,soonfamilyincome,livelihoodsandsupportnetworks2. Availabilityandpricesoffoodstuffs,soabilityoffoodproductstofreelyreachmarketsSeveredeclinesinboththeseareashavebeencentraldriversofYemen’sslowslidetowardsfaminesincetheconflictbeganinearly2015Thisthree-yeardeclinestartsfromaverylowbase-pre-crisisYemenalreadyhadlargenumbersofvulnerablepeople.
*ThisexcludesfoodgrownforhomeconsumpUonandfoodaiddistributedfreetothemostvulnerable
