INTRODUCTION• UNESCO nominated the Sacred City of Kandy as a World

Cultural Heritage site in 1988 under the criteria of iv and vi.Criteria IV - The monumental ensemble of Kandy is an outstanding example of a type of construction in which the Royal Palace and the Temple of the Tooth of Buddha are juxtaposed since the 4th century.

Criteria VI - The Temple of the Tooth, the Palace Complex and the Sacred City of Kandy are directly and tangibly associated with the history of the spread of Buddhism. The temple of Kandy built to house the tooth of Buddha bears witness to an ever-flourishing cult.

• Famous for the Temple of the Tooth and many other temples the city could be called the cultural capital of the island.

• The city established in the 15th century was the last royal capital where 2500 years of royal rule ended.

• This bustling market town is rich in cultural diversity has plenty of itineraries to offer to the tourists.
