What is Matter?
All of us are matter! We take up space and have mass.
What is Matter?• Matter is•Anything that has mass•Mass- the measure of how much material makes up the object
•And has volume.•Volume- the amount of space an object takes up
Mass
Volume
Matter
States of Matter• Matter exists in three states.
•Solids
• Liquids
•Gases
States of Matter• Matter exists in three states.•Solids•Anything that has definite volume •Anything that has definite shape• Examples: • Cat• Bricks• Car
States of Matter• Matter exists in three states.• Liquids•Has volume• Takes on shape of container.• Examples•Water• Paint•Gasoline
States of Matter•Gases• Fills the entire volume of a container.• Examples• Carbon Monoxide•Oxygen•Helium
Properties of Matter• Matter has properties.
• Properties •Something about an object that can be observed• Size• Shape• Color• Smell• Sound • Temperature
What makes up Matter?• Matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms.
•Atoms- The smallest unit of matter. •Atoms join together to form larger particles of matter.•Oxygen is made up of just one kind of atom.•Atoms join together to make different kinds of matter.•Water has two kinds of atoms that join together.
Particles in Matter• Particles are different in different states of matter.• In Solids• Particles pull toward each other. •Stay close together. •Can’t change places.• In Liquids• Particles are farther apart than in solids.• Pull between particles is weaker than solids.•Move around each other and change places. • In Gases•Do not pull together strongly. •Move around more freely.•Move to fill any space.
Matter Changes• Matter changes in two ways.
• Physical Change•Changes in the size•Changes in the shape•Changes in the state of matter• Example: Breaking glass
•Chemical Change•Causes matter to become new kind of matter. • Example: Rusting of iron
