Naval applications

Radar antenna systems

Our production line for radar applications:

l Base plates carrying a maximal mass of 300 tons, with a significantreduction of weight compared to metal applications.

l Round panels with a diameter of 3m as ground plate for the wholeradar system.

l Site and top panels with 8m or longer (maximum 15 m).l Pre-fabricated parts, consisting of different material combinations (e.g.

aluminium honeycomb, glass/phenolic laminates, foams, etc.) withintegrated welded frames

l Pre-machined partsl We also produce whole radar antennas (see land systems)

The panels can be installed in antenna systems, radio telescopes, satellitesystems and dishes.

The construction of radar antenna systems needed sandwich panels inlarge and accurate dimensions as support-, wall and base plate elements.

Main criterias for this project:

l Low weightl High surface qualityl Resistance against steady loads and aggressive environmental

conditions (e.g. sea water, high wind loads, waves, … )

EURO-COMPOSITES¯ solved all this requirements with two differentmanufacturing approaches:

l The support panels for the electronic equipment and the base plates,were realized as reinforced aluminium sandwich construction.

l The wall and cover elements (e.g. radomes) were manufactured as acombination of aluminium, foam and laminates.

Integrated copper clad foils or printed boards into panels of aramid fibrehoneycomb as core material and skins (not shown in the photograph) ofhigh pressure laminate (HPL). The white rim is a potting which enables to fixthe panel to a given structure.

The honeycomb can be used as carrier material for the electronic partsand as support for the printed boards.

Drop pallets for parachutesystems

Panels consist of a welded aluminum frame with aluminum skins.

Manufacturing materials:

Such pallets are needed to ensure that a cargo like health care goods,vehicles, plants and machines are not damaged during a parachute dropout.

Panel protection according to DIN EN 1522 and 1523 against three shotswith a triangular strike pattern (equilateral triangle with a side length of120±10mm

l Material has been classified according to resistance class FB7-NSl Made of extremely hard ceramic tiles bonded to an aramid/neoprene

laminate. The ceramic side (= strike face) is protected by a glass/epoxyprepreg.
