HISTORY• The contemporary history of Ilion started with the
establishment of a small settlement under the name Ilion -Troas in March 1858. Such a decision was not randomly made: years ago European charts placed ancient municipality of Troy at this area.
• At first, there were the residences of the people working at the farm land owned by the Greek Royal Family. Its population was then 227 residents, according to the census of 1861. In the years that followed the expulsion of King Otto of Greece many rich families came to the area to buy land and settle down. The main owner of the land was the Liossis’ family. So, at the end of the 19th century the area was called New Liossia until 1991 when the local council changed its name into Ilion .

ATHENSATHENS
History Athens is one of the oldest named cities in the
world. It became the leading city of Ancient Greece,
even outdoing Sparta, in the first millennium B.C.
During the early Middle Ages, Athens experienced a
decline, then recovered under the later
Byzantine Empire and was relatively prosperous
during the period of the Crusades (12th and 13th
centuries), benefiting from Italian trade. Following a
period of sharp decline under the rule of the
Ottoman Empire, Athens re-emerged in the 19th
century as the capital of the independent Greek
state.
Athens: Etymology According to an etiological myth, Athena and Poseidon requested to be
patrons of the city and give their name to the city, so they competed
with one another for the honour, offering the city one gift each. Poseidon
produced a spring by striking the ground with his trident,
symbolizing naval power. Athena created the olive tree, symbolizing
peace and prosperity. The Athenians, under their ruler Cecrops,
accepted the olive tree and named the city after Athena. Athḗnai is a
plural form, the Athḗnai, since it was originally a group of ten cities
which Theseus unified into one city.
