Welcome

Taarnby Main Library dates from 1982. After more than 25 years of use, and in the light of the major development having taken place in the library world and in society generally, the library was in need of extensive renovation and new décor.The principle of the new décor is to divide the library into “Adventure” and “Knowledge”. The more lively activities “Adventure” on the ground floor and a quieter area on the first floor “Know-ledge” with the opportunity for absorption and concentration.The new Taarnby Main Library promotes culture, knowledge, local history and instruction in the possibilities of the internet. Last, but not least, the Main Library is a qualified meeting place – a multi-facetted house for all the citizens of the municipality.

The Rotunda

The Rotunda is the central meeting place for everybody coming to the library and this is where you can get tempted and inspired to explore all the other things on offer in the house.

The Rotunda is designed for considerable flexibility and offers the chance to enjoy a great variety of social and cultural activities at all times of the day.Here you can eat your packed lunch, read the newspapers and magazines. On the reading stairs you can sit and read and have a good time with a cup of coffee either just by yourself or together with friends you have met. It is also possible to make room for all kinds of arrangements, lectures, films, performances and cafés both during opening hours and outside these.

Adventure

The ground floor is the adventure room with room for lively activities.Here the areas for children, music and media, instruction and adult fiction are placed around the Rotunda.The general idea has been to design the room with a great variety of opportunities for self-expression for users of all ages – here you can be inspired, entertained and get the chance to relax.

The INFO-desk is placed centrally by the entrance and the staff is ready to answer all your questions.

Fiction for adults and older children is divided into popular genres, and in the theme area for novels you will be able to get ideas for reading and study the new books.

In the area for smaller children and parents you will find all the various offers to families with small children and room for playing.

Gamer Street is an internet and games area for children. The box offers console games for young people and adults as well as mini cinema for all ages.

Often there is instruction for the public at the PC-workstations. The rest of the time these can be used for study purposes.

The ground floor is a many-facetted offer of adventure and experience for the users.

Knowledge

Knowledge is the key word for the design of the library’s first floor with its space for tranquillity and absorption.All non-fiction for older children and adults is placed here and is easily accessible.Between the shelves you will find seats and work stations, both for the individual user and for groups.

In the lounge area you can read the papers and magazines or watch the news on the TV screen.The city and local archives are also placed here.

PC work stations are placed along the glass wall, where you can either use the library’s PCs with study facilities or your own portable PC.

Round about the entire floor there is room for small and large exhibitions about topical subjects which makes it exciting and interesting to go exploring along the shelves.

More library in the basement

There is free access for the public to the open stack where part of the materials collection is placed.

Other facilities

Apart from the traditional materials such as books and music the library has many new offers that naturally belong in a modern library.

Cinema for games and films, large screens, games area for children, girls’ cave, exhibition facilities, meeting rooms, stages and much more have become part of the library on a par with the traditional offers.

There a many seating arrangements of various kinds and for different purposes. Events, literary cafés and instruction/tuition in the library space itself help to illustrate the broad choice of offers in the Main Library.

The library as an active, cultural meeting place for the local community is an important function which is underpinned both through the physical design and through the activities that are offered and promoted here.
