Our Vision and Mission Statement guides our pastoral planning
Established in 1922, the parish family of St. John the Baptist Church welcomes and invites all people to our community, especially those in need.
Guided by the Holy Spirit we are sustained by the Sunday Eucharist, the Word of God, and the Sacraments. All are encouraged to share their time, talent and treasure as we grow in love through our Catholic faith and the life, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Summary
Christmas Review: The Committee discussed how Christmas
―went‖ at the Masses. We try to put our ―best foot forward‖ so
that the many people who come to Mass experience prayerful-
ness and feel welcome. Father Frank has addressed the problems with the microphones in the
parish hall for the 4:00 Christmas Eve Mass, and next year we will give more room for the
easier distribution of Communion. The schedule of Masses that we have used for the past two
years is working well.
St. Blase: The feast is celebrated on February 3rd. Blessing of Throats is during the 9:00 daily
mass.
Friendly Visitors: The ministry will be introduced during Lent and begin after Easter. The
Committee agrees that for Lent 2020, our parish can be invited to focus their Lenten practices
on reaching out to the lonely and the homebound. We will include this invitation in the
petitions, the bulletin, and invite the priests and deacons to include this in their homilies during
the Lenten Season. The First Sunday of Lent members of the Friendly Visitors committee will
be available for more information.
Lent and Easter: We will be using the same schedule as last year for Ash Wednesday, the
Triduum and Easter Sunday. Father Frank will order a similar paschal candle and the tapers/
holders for the Easter Vigil.
Hymnal Ribbons: A suggestion came to the Committee to look into ―ribbons‖ for the Gather
Hymnals. The Committee looked at a sample and discussed its practicality in light of the
variety of age groups that use the hymnals. At this time, we will not be inserting them into the
hymnals.
Church Renovation: The Committee is ready to assist with the next step of the renewal of
our church interior. With diocesan permission, the work can begin during the summer. It
includes 3 parts: (1) repair of the sanctuary floor and upgrade to marble tiles, (2) enhancement
of the wall of the sanctuary behind the Tabernacle and the Crucifix, and (3) stabilization of the
music area by replacing the platforms and securing the electrical wiring. The Committee will
be looking at the white marble slabs that may be used as part of the project.
Jubilee Preparations: A sample image of St. John the Baptist for the parish 100th
anniversary prayer card was shared. Members of the committee continue to work on a draft
of a Centennial Prayer.

Finance Committee Thursday, January 23, 2020 7:00 p.m. Summary
1.Christmas Mailing: The annual Christmas Mailing did not go
out as scheduled due to the error on the part of our contribution
envelope manufacturer. They mailed our Christmas contribution
envelopes AFTER Christmas. While the first collection was very close to the 2018
amount, the second collection (Collection for the Poor) was significantly below the prior
year. Father is still assessing our real damages.
2.Church Door Project: The exterior doors of the church are not in good condition.
The side doors in particular are in dire need of repair and likely replacement. Father
provided a tour to three vendors interested in replacing the doors on the church. A
representative from the diocesan procurement office also attended. Estimates are still to
be received.
3.Other Maintenance Issues: The 4th A/C unit is now fully installed and functional
and will be ready for summer 2020. Also some necessary updating and maintenance will
be conducted on classroom lighting (benefitting from a PSE&G rebate for LED lighting)
and rectory bathrooms.
4.Preschool: The preschool program is progressing well with registration for next year.
There are preliminary plans in place should the state mandate universal Pre-K.
5.Budget and Balance Sheet: A review of the operating statement indicates that
contribution revenues are roughly equal to last year Expenses are also in line with
last year. Given revenue and expense trends we have no reason to expect significant
variance from our annual operating budget. A review of the balance sheet yielded some
information questions which the bookkeeper will help the committee with.
6.Sanctuary Repair and Church Renewal: Father Frank also updated the group
regarding Centennial Jubilee efforts. He shared sketches of the sanctuary. This project
has to be signed off by the diocese. The repair and renewal will take place in July and
August and in a period that is free of weddings. This spring we will begin a centennial
fundraising effort to assist with the interior of the church and other projects to prepare
for our 100th anniversary.
NEXT MEETING, 7:00 pm, Thursday March 26.

The ladies L.I.F.T. gathering will be in the Parish Hall at 7:00 on Tuesday, February 4. Our
theme is love and St Valentine’s Day. We will enjoy prayer, laughter, snacks and friendly company. Join us for a pleasant evening!
This new ministry seeks to improve the health and well-being
of seniors and home bound adults through social interaction, mental
stimulation and emotional support. This ministry provides homebound
members of the community with regular social visits or telephone calls
by compassionate volunteers. It is a ministry of presence that supports
outreach to ease loneliness and isolation within our parish community.
More information will be available at the beginning of Lent.

The chasuble is the large outer garment a priest wears
at Mass. Only a priest (or bishop) wears one and only at
Mass. The single exception is on Good Friday, when we have
no Mass, but the priest who presides at the service of the
Lord’s Passion wears the chasuble, linking the services from
Holy Thursday to Easter. Its color announces the season or
feast.
This odd word comes from the Latin casula, meaning
―little house.‖ Some of these garments seem ample enough to
house a family of six. Originally, the casula was an outer cloak or jacket worn by men or women
as secular dress on cool days. It was formed by two quarter-circles of cloth stitched together front
and back. In liturgical usage, the seams became decorated. In time, the seams moved to the sides
but the decorations remained, making the chasuble a portable billboard of liturgical symbolism,
ranging from the tasteful to the absurd.
During the middle ages, the priest started saying Mass with his back to the people and
introduced the elevation of the host and chalice so everyone could see over his head. Fashion-
minded presiders noted that the old garment did not function well for the elevation; it bunched up
the sleeves and pulled at the bottom. So chasubles became sleeveless, if you will, and servers
began lifting up the bottom at genuflections, like bridesmaids tending the train.
The stole, traditionally worn underneath the chasuble, is sometimes seen on top. It makes
more visible the distinction between the stoles of the priest and the deacon and creates new
opportunities for design, but the results do not always satisfy. A stole external to the chasuble is
new in the history of vestments, so instructions on the practice are scarce.
Although designs today run freely through a variety of shapes, colors, and patterns, the
basic simplicity of the vestment remains. Priests concelebrating Mass may wear an alb and stole
without the chasuble if they prefer. The presider may also wear a combination alb-chasuble with
an external stole for certain occasions or groups. But the principal symbolic vesture for a presider
at Mass is the chasuble—a ―house‖ the Word of God inhabits, a cloak for the spiritual journey
and a sign of our leader’s role.
