Welcome to Čakovec!
Čakovec is the town in the northern Croatia, located around 90 kilometres north of
Zagreb (the Croatian capital).

The town is well connected by road and rail. It is located about 20 km from the Hungarian and
Slovenian borders.

The name comes from the count Dimitriusa Chakyja, who built in the early 13th century, a
wooden fort later named "Čakov tower".
According to the geographer Strabo's reports in the 1st century, today's location of the city of Čakovec was the site of Aquama (wet town) in Roman times and at the time a marshland, a military post and a
legionnaire camp.

of Čakovec is considered to have
started in 1547, when Nikola Šubić Zrinski of
Szigetvár became the owner of the area.

privileges to the inhabitants of the
Čakovec fortress and its suburbs on 29th
may 1579, which was the starting point for
Čakovec free trading. This date is
celebrated as the Day of the town.
In 1738 the city was devastated by the
earthquake, in 1741 by fire and another earthquake hit
it in 1880. In 1848 Josip Jelačić
liberated Čakovec from the Hungarians and joined it to
Croatia.

In 1893rd the city was first introduced an electric current. The first railroad track was built here in 1860 and helped to
connect Budapest with the ports Rijeka and Trieste.
From 1941. to 1945. the city was under Hungarian occupation. In 1945 it was liberated by the Soviet Red Army.
Especially during the summer, Čakovec hosts many cultural events.
Local Museum Međimurja Čakovec in the Old Town preserves 17,000 worth of items.
Čakovec has a library and theater acting within the
Cultural Center.
