Party's 2008 presidential nomination . In August 2008, Barack was nominated by

the Democratic party as their candidate to be President of the United States.

Introduction

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4,1961

His mother was from heartland-of-the-U.S.Kansas, and his father from Kenya. Barack's

parents eventually divorced, and after his mother remarried, he lived in Indonesia for a time beforereturning to Hawaii to live with his grandparents.He later moved to New York, where he graduatedfrom Columbia University in 1983.

Barack put law school on hold after college andmoved to Chicago, where he became a communityorganizer with a church-based group that wasdedicated to improving living conditions in poor neighborhoods.

Barack earned his law degree from Harvard in1991, where he became the first African-American

president of the Harvard Law Review. He thenreturned to Chicago to practice as a civil rightslawyer and teach constitutional law.

In 2004, Barack wrote and delivered the keynote address atthe 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, and

became a rising star in U.S. politics. A few months later,

he was elected to the U.S. Senate with a landslide 70% of the vote. Four months into his senate career, Time magazine named him "one of the world's most influential

people," calling him "one of the most admired politiciansin America." Barack formally announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election in Springfield, Illinois onFebruary 10, 2007.

Obama as an author

Barack is also an accomplished author. His1995 book, Dreams from My Father , is amemoir of his youth and early career.

In December 2004, Barack signed acontract to write three more books.

The first, The Audacity of Hope , was published in October 2006. The book hasremained at or near the top of the New York Times Best Seller list since its publication.It was also the theme of his 2004 keynote

address. The second book will be achildren's book to be co-written with hiswife Michelle and their two daughters, with

profits going to charity. The content of thethird book has et to be announced.

Is he a Muslim?

Obama's grandfather was a Muslim, but his father was anatheist who did occasionally attend services at a mosque inIndonesia and his mother was agnostic, not practicing any

particular religion. Where does that leave Obama? He is aChristian, having attended the same Christian church(Trinity United Church of Christ) for nearly 20 years. Andabout that rumor that he attended a madrassa as a child inIndonesia? He attended only Catholic and public schools.

Various photos featuring Obama wearing Muslim-influenced clothing helped fuel the rumor.

Since declaring his candidacy for president,misconceptions about his religion are one point heand his campaign have continually fought tocorrect. From assertions that he's a Muslim torumors that he received training in Islam while helived in Indonesia as a child, these rumors have

been used to spark fear about him. And despiteObama's denials, rumors and e-mails about hisMuslim and Islamic ties continue to circulate onthe Internet.
