Writen by Rurry Diane Respati
Speech Preparation
1. Getting started with selecting a topic and purpose,
analyzing the audience, gathering materials, and
supporting your ideas.
2. Organizing the body of the speech, beginning and
ending the speech, and also outlining the speech.
Presenting the speech
1. Using language
Use the right words, so the audience would understand your idea. Good
speakers use words accurately and correctly. Using language clearly by using
familiar words.
2. Delivery
Most audience prefer delivery that combines formality with the best attributes
of good conversation, directness, spontaneity, animation, vocal and facial
expressiveness and a lively sense of communication.
3. Using visual aids
Avoid using chalkboard for visual aids, avoid passing visual aids among the
audience, display visual aids where listeners can see them and only while
discussing them, talk to your audience not to your visual aid, explain it clearly
and concisely, don`t forget to practice with your visual aids.
Speaking Skills
David Heathfield suggested some simple story telling strategies.
Some ground rules for the discussion:
1. Try to ensure everyone can see and hear you when you speak.
2. Only one person can speak at a time.
3. Ask permission to speak.
4. Use`s people names, not he or she.
5. If in doubt, ask people to clarify what they mean.
6. Be prepared to clarify what you mean.
7. Don`t pretend that you speak for everyone, use I rather than we.
8. Avoid generalizations of the type Everyone knows that…
9. Speak in English unless given permission by the group to speak in your own
language.
Learning vocabulary with cars, for the topic, will help us to talking about it because
cars are a very popular small talk topic. There are a lot of topics we can use to
improve our speaking skills. Learning vocabulary by explaining about cars,
discussing about tourism, complete the sentences of some incident, learning
about limericks (short humorous poem), stereotypes, and many others.
Body Language
Action is a language and it`s universal. We use
the language of action all the time. Our bodies
respond to our feeling. We use action to tell other
what we need. In public speaking, language of
action has 3 part:
1. Posture, the way you stand and hold your body.
2. Gesture, by gesture we usually means all
movement except walking include facial
expression, head movement, movement of the neck and shoulder and the hole
of tortial. In most gesture all part of the body are works together to have
acoordinated effect and means.
3. Naturalness
Control effective technique this type a good news for a language of action.
When we use this in speech situation, we need knowledge and right practice.
Enhancing your presentation skills
Douglas Jefferys explain about how to
enhancing our presentation skills. Speaking to a
group taking first place from the most people
afraid of.
Here`s everything we need to know to beat that fear:
1. Physical skills
First, we need to controlling our anxiety, such as empty our bladder before
starting to speak, make the audience comfortable. Speaker and the audience
have to be in the same page on the same way, don`t let them have their own
journey.
The next, eye contact, we associate eye contact to telling the truth. We respect
people if we look at in their eye.
2. The power of pause
Learn to stop talking long enough to realy take in what we gonna say. The
pause is the most important thing we can do. Get some picture, before the
next thing we gonna say.
3. Body language
Professional speaker, usually empty their pocket before speaking. Although, it
will limit our impact of what we gonna say, just empty it. Finger out someone
isa bad gesture, try to lock our finger down on our thumb.
4. Podium
Try to go back to the area that separated us from the audience.
5. Effective content
Effective content will not makes the audience bored.
Extreme Make Over Power Point Edition
Power point is a digital story telling to a
first of all. As presenter, we use this tool a lot.
We use power point as a complement to
combine between two ideas, visual and verbal.
1. Start using detail script or outline on the
bottom of your slide.
2. Open a blank slide, get rid of the template,
and get rid of the bullet.
3. Put one idea cross per slide. Don`t put much graphic or animation, it would
lacking in thought, meaning and value. Use minimally animation sound.
4. High contrast has more impact. The same emphasis will makes difficult to tell
what`s important.
5. Make simple slide but realy help the story.
6. Black the screen to make the audience focus on us.
7. Put a single piece of text and image. Find a good image. Image that create
emotion, humor to make people laugh, another way to adding your story. Take
a photograph of some children works.
8. Use remote mouse, it will allows you to the room and became part of the
audience.
9. You are the most important part in your story, not the slide, it`s just the
implement. This is all about story telling.
Basic guidelines for designing your presentation:
1. Lists and prioritize the top three goals that you want to accomplish with your
audience.
2. Be really clear about who your audience is and why it is important to them to
be in the meeting.
3. List the major point of information that you want to convey with your audience.
4. Be clear about the tone that you want to set for your presentation.
5. Design a brief opening (5-10% of presentation time).
6. Prepare the body of your presentation (70-80% of presentation time).
7. Design a brief closing (5-10%of presentation time).
8. Design time for question and answers (10% of presentation time).
Active Listening
Good speaker not only inform their audience, they also listen to them. By
listening, you know that they are understanding the information and if that
information important to them.
Nerves
Do not fight nerves, welcome them. Then you`ll feel that the presentation is
a challenge and you became better. If you let your nerves take over, then you`ll
withdrawing from the audience.
In presentation skill, first of all we need to make speech preparation such
as: selecting a topic and purpose, analyzing the audience, gathering materials,
and supporting our ideas. After that, we have to organizing the body of the
speech, the content and the time limit, beginning and ending the speech, and
outlining the speech.
When we were presenting something, we have to use clear and correct
words in our language. Use our body language, eye contact, gestures and
naturalness. The best way to presenting is giving information through story telling.
Power point may help us as complement. One idea per slide, not too much image
and animation will make the presentation effective. Don`t forget to active listening
to the audience so that we`ll knew if they understand of what we say or not.
