• Rural eThekwini recorded high levels of those without formal education in three consecutive Censuses commissioned by Statistics SA.

• These were mainly in areas under the chieftaincy administration.

• The KwaXimba Traditional Authority had the highest concentration at just over 70%.

• There was an slight improvement in the number of those with no schooling during the 2001 Census.

• The highest concentration of the 20 year old and over age group with no schooling fluctuated between 50% and 70%, this is in the north-western rural areas around Nyuswa and also in the south-west around Vumangazi..

• Rural eThekwini remained the most affected by no schooling cases.

• According to the 2011 Census, there was a decline in the number of 20 year old and over age group with no schooling .

• For the first time there were no Wards reporting more than 50% no schooling cases.

• The highest concentration of people with no education fluctuated between 50% and 80% in both 1996 and 2001 Censuses respectively.

• Although an improvement was recorded in 2001, the most noticeable improvement was recorded during the 2011 Census where less than 50% of the 20 year old and over age group remained uneducated.•It is noteworthy that the rural areas in 2011 have no Wards reporting over 50% with no education.

• Those residing in urbanized environments recorded a high degree of tertiary education.

• The highest concentration of those with tertiary qualifications was recorded at just over 40% in 5 Wards during Census 1996.

•This includes areas such as Durban North, Berea N and S, Pinetown, Kloof and Hillcrest.

• For the first time 1 Ward had tertiary qualifications improved to over 50% during Census 2001. This is the Ward covering Gillits, Hillcrest and Kloof.

• These were more concentrated in urbanised settlement types.

• Like Census 1996, Census 2011 also showed an over 50% concentration of the age group with tertiary education.

•There were now 5 Wards with between 50 – 59% of the over 20 year population having Tertiary Education.

•These include areas such as: Umhlanga, Morningside, CBD, Pinetown, Cowies Hill, Glenwood, Umbilo, Kloof, Hillcrest and Gillits.

• This was again concentrated in the same urbanised settlement types.

•The areas that recorded a high degree of people with tertiary qualifications remained the same across the three Censuses.

• eThekwini urbanized areas maintained a high degree of the 20 year old and over age group with tertiary qualifications while eThekwini rural under traditional leadership recorded high levels of no education cases.

• Census 2011 yielded a decrease in no schooling amongst the 20 year old and over age group while, on the other hand an increase in those with tertiary education was recorded.

Regarding no-schooling for the over 20 year olds it is clear that there has been significant progress most notably in rural areas.

Regarding tertiary education there has also been improvement. In 1996 there was 1 Ward with over 40% having tertiary education and in 2011 there were 4 Wards between 40 to 49% and 5 Wards over 50 to 59%. This was concentrated in the urban core from the CBD to Umhlanga in the north and from the CBD to Hillcrest in the west.
