What will your 6th grade day look like?
Before School
• Students may enter the building and go to the cafeteria at 8:30
• At 8:50 students are dismissed to their lockers to unpack backpacks and get materials for class
• Tardy bell rings at 9:00 a.m.
Lockers• Each student is assigned an
individual locker and lockers need to have locks on at all times
• Combination locks are rented through school during our orientation nights before school starts
• Locker cleanouts available through counselor
During the Day…
• Four minute passing period• 6th grade classes are all
downstairs• 6th grade Office centrally located– 6th grade Principal, Counselor and
Secretary
• Separate lunch for only 6th graders
Lunch• Separate 6th grade Lunch• More choices – Klein Lines and Snack
Bar• Menus available online and also on
monitors in the cafeteria• New pin #’s when you move to 6th
grade• Deposit money using Net Cash
Machine, online or by sending a check
End of the day….• Bell rings at 3:55• Car-riders dismissed out the front of
building• Walkers/Bike Riders dismissed out
the back of building• Bus riders report to cafeteria to
assigned tables according to bus number
*Transportation will post bus numbers and routes online in early August

• Unlike any other intermediate school• More like a bookstore• Fiction shelved by genre – – Guys Read, Girls Read, Mystery &

What are the classes 6th graders take?
Core Content Classes
• English/Language Arts• Math• Science• Social Studies
Electives6th grade students choose one
•Art*•Theater Arts*•Band*•Choir*•Orchestra**Requires fees and/or instrument rental
•Math Improvement–Required based on Math STAAR results
Physical Education
• Students are required to take two years at the intermediate level (6th and 7th grades)
• Students will dress out in their PE uniform daily and are encouraged to bring it home on the weekends to be washed
• Students will be assigned a separate locker in the locker room for their PE clothes
What are the differences between Regulars, PreAP
and GT?
Regular Courses
• Homework will be a major part of a nightly routine
• Teacher directed activities and learning
• Daily drill of new learning• Review sheets often given before
tests
PreAP/PreAP-GT Courses
• PreAP is self select for students who are independent learners and want a more academically challenging curriculum
• Much faster pace
• Increased homework level
• Tests have more application type questions/essay style
• Students should be comfortable with contributing to classroom discussions
• PreAP-GT status is based on GT screening from the fall of the year prior to qualifying
How Can Students Prepare for the Intermediate School
Experience?
Students Can Prepare by…• Make any course selection
changes/decisions by June 8th, 2012.• Begin to strengthen organizational skills• Master all math facts• Read, read, read, especially during the
summer – novels, non-fiction and current events
• Relax!
What Can Parents Do?!?
Parents
• Take a deep breath!• Help your child make a wise elective
choice• Talk with your child’s 5th grade teacher
about subject level placement (Regulars vs. PreAP)
• Listen to your child• Ask LOTS of questions
• Express confidence in his or her ability to solve problems
• Insist that he or she accept responsibility for himself or herself
• Do NOT accept zeroes as grades!• Check assignments nightly in planner• Check teacher websites to verify assignments
