WOMEN IN MOTOR SPORT

* Motor sport is a truly mixed sport; open to all, competing and working within the same rules and regulations in perfect equity

* Since the early 1900’s many women have competed in the sport including several in F1, the World Rally Championship and Indycar, and these women have started to write the history of women in motor sport…

* Behind the scenes there are many highly qualified women engineers, officials, team principals, directors, mechanics, team managers, public relations officers….

THE FIA AND THE WOMEN IN MOTORSPORT COMMISSION (WMC)

BACKGROUND

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) was founded in 1904. It is the governing body for world motor sport and the federation of the world’s leading motoring organisations. It brings together 227 national motoring and sporting organisations from 132 countries on five continents. On the 11th December 2009, the World Motor Sport Council, presided over by the President of the FIA Jean Todt, approved the project to create a “Women in Motorsport Commission” (WMC)

Since its creation, the WMC has received much support from motor sport’s National Sporting Authorities (ASNs) and the motor industry across the world of motor sport

“The Women in Motorsport Commission aims to create a sports culture which facilitates and values the full participation of women in all aspects of the sport.” “There are already a number of highly successful women working in our sport, but we also need to invest in the future and encourage the younger generation to view it as a world of equal opportunities. Motor sport is not just about driving; it is an arena that provides openings in a whole sphere of different areas. Knowing these opportunities exist is all part of an impor-tant communication plan for the Commission and our national sporting authorities.”

MICHÈLE MOUTON PRESIDENT OF THE WMC

JEAN TODT PRESIDENT OF THE FIA
