Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam
My Dear Parishioners,
With great delight I announce Patty O'Brien as Presentation's "Woman of the Year" for 2015. As a nominee of hers aptly wrote: "She is a gentle Catholic woman who demonstrates her love for the Lord in everything she does. She quietly works behind the
scene and is always willing to do what needs to be done."
Patty and her husband, Bob, have been members of Presenta-tion parish for over 50 years. They are the longest active mem-bers of the Right to Life Ministry in our parish. It is a power-ful witness to see the two of them standing on the sidewalk in front of an abortion facility, praying the rosary and witnessing to the sanctity of life as a married couple after all these years. Undoubtedly, they have saved the lives of many, many babies over the years and assisted an untold number of mothers and families with their prayers. In the early years of the ministry, young girls who thought they might be pregnant would actually call Patty at home, who helped them with her calm, patient, gentle, loving manner to choose life.
Bob and Patty's three children all attended Presentation school at which Patty was active during their school years. Over the years Patty has also taught CCD, been a member of our Bereavement Ministry, is now active in our Senior Joy Ministry. For decades she has volunteered at Wellspring every Wednesday evening, serving food and doing dishes. She also taught a marriage class at St. Francis High School for eight years, where she taught and modeled for teenage girls how to be a Christian woman, wife and mother.
In the closing words of a nominee: "Patty deserves the honor of Woman of the Year as she always holds Jesus in her heart and has a special relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary. After all her Catholic Christian work over the years both in Presentation and in the community, it is time to honor her." Con-gratulations, Patty!
In closing, Pope Francis has called for "24 Hours for the Lord" during this Lenten Season of the Year of Mercy. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered in our deanery for 24 hours straight this weekend, from 12-noon Friday to 12-noon Saturday. Here are the locations and times for con-fession:
Friday, March 4 12:00-3:00pm | St. Mel's 3:00-6:00pm | St. Lawrence 6:00-9:00pm | St. Philomene 9:00pm-12:00 midnight | Presentation Saturday, March 5 12:00-2:00am | Mercy San Juan Hospital chapel 2:00-4:00am | Our Lady of the Assumption 4:00-7:00am | St. John Vianney 7:00-9:00am | St. John the Evangelist 9:00am-12:00 noon | Our Lady of the Assumption
Pray for the sick in our community, especially: Anthony Andreozzi, Maryann Baer, Shaun Banagan, Patricia Becker, Theresa Bencken-Garn, Mary Carter, Adolf Cascardo, Emily Daley, Bill Dunphy, Melba Fiscus, Leilani Fitzgerald, Owen Foley, Patti Fox, Marcy French, Vienna Golsong, Lucille Gruenwald, Pat Ingram, Kimberly Kaufman, Mary Largent, Shirley Lauwers, Fr. Deacon Lawrence
There is a story about a woman who had a son. This son was about to be executed by Napoleon for some offense and the
mother went before the emperor to plead for mercy. “Why?” asked Napoleon, “what has he done to deserve mercy?” “If he deserved it,” the mother re-plied, “it would not be mercy.” Grace is a merciful gift from heav-en, we cannot earn it or deserve it, and it is through Christ that God offers it to us. Like the fig tree in the parable, we are not cursed but we are running out of time to show that we are worth saving. It is not that God’s patience with us is limited, but it is we who are limited to our own lives. We have but a short span of time to bear fruit, and we cannot hope to be paid wages if we are un-productive servants. The gardener who intercedes on our behalf is Jesus. Nourishing and working the soil of our hearts, is the grace that He offers to us. In the eyes of Jesus we are all equally at risk, the tower could fall upon any of us at any time if we persist in sin. The danger is not from physical death, which is tem-porary; it is from spiritual death, which is eternal. To spare ourselves that fate we must respond to the offer of grace and work with Our Lord to bear fruitful lives. By this path, we will be saved.

What are the Scrutinies?
These Rites are celebrated to help deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (RCIA 141). The Rites of Scrutiny are meant to uncover, and then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the elects’ hearts and to bring out through repentance all that is upright, strong, and good. Three Scrutinies are celebrated in the parish community on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent, after the homily. The Scripture read-ings for the Scrutinies ordinarily come from Cycle A of the Lec-tionary: the Gospel story of the Samaritan woman at the well for the 1st Scrutiny, the Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind for the 2nd Scrutiny, and the Gospel story of the raising of Lazarus for the 3rd Scrutiny. The celebrations of the Scrutinies also remind the whole parish community of the need to reflect on their own sins and the need for God’s help.
