The Race to 61 Home Runs
1961 marked the year of the great home run race between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. Maris ended up winning the race and
set the new record of 61 home runs which stood until Mark McGwire re-set the record 37 years later during his famous
friendly battle with Sammy Sosa.
1960 Philadelphia Eagles
The first NFL champion of the 1960s were the Philadelphia Eagles. The title remains the organization’s
last.
Wilma Rudolph’s Triumph
American sprinter Wilma Rudolph won three gold medals in track during the 1960 Summer Olympic Games in Rome, Italy. Her triumph
is especially memorable because she overcame polio during her childhood to become one of the greatest track and field stars of all-
time.
1967 AFL-NFL Championship Game
Retroactively named “Super Bowl I”, and was played on January 15th, 1967 in Los Angeles.
The “Big Game” was NOT a sell-out. A 60-second television commercial cost an advertiser $85,000. By
comparison, a company was charged $2.5 million for a 30-second spot in the most recent Super Bowl.
The game was won by the Green Bay Packers and legendary coach Vince Lombardi. The Packers would also go on to win Super Bowl II in 1968.
UCLA Bruins in the 1960s
Won Division I basketball championships in ’64, ’65, ’67, ’68, and ’69.
Considered the last great college sports dynasty. All teams were coached by Hall of Fame coach Jon Wooden. The dynasty continued well into the next decade, and the teams
were led by Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and Bill Walton.
Wilt Chamberlain’s Big Day
March 2nd, 1967: Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors became the first (and only) NBA player to eclipse the 100-point mark in a single game.
Chamberlain scored 102 points in the Warriors’ 169-147 victory over the rival New York Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The Guarantee
In January of 1967, the AFL’s New York Jet quarterback Joe Namath “guaranteed” a victory for his Jets over the NFL’s heavily-favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.
Namath delivered on his promise, and the game is widely considered the driving force behind the AFL-NFL merger which formed the NFL as we know it today.
The Vietnam War
The war in Vietnam lasted throughout the entire decade of the 1960s. The war in Vietnam lasted throughout the entire decade of the 1960s. The war raised strong emotions both overseas and at home. The war raised strong emotions both overseas and at home.
The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a major moment in the Cold War in 1961. It is regarded as the closest our
world has ever come to a nuclear war.
Anti-war Movement
The Anti-war movement gained steam in 1965 as the country became divided over the Vietnam War.
Assassinations
The 1960s brought about the assassinations of two highly-respected Americans. Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968 and President John F.
Kennedy on November 22, 1963.
