Social Work is a profession that aims to bring social
change to the individual, family, community, organization and
society through the application of theoretical knowledge in
social science, universal values of human rights and
social justice and social work skills.
Social work is practiced in various settings like social
welfare, social policy and advocacy, rehabilitation and caring
services, schools, medical and public health,
mental health as well as industrial organizations.
• Social work began in the late 19th century and has
been recognised as a profession in developed
countries for more than 100 years.
• Professional social work was introduced into
Malaysia after World War II with the establishment
of the Department of Social Welfare in 1946.
• Over the years, there has been no regulation of
social work practice and no certification of
social work practitioners.
