• The 27 major academic research libraries across Canada, Library and Archives Canada, Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information and the Library of Parliament

1. To gain an understanding of the steps involved and obstacles encountered in setting up an IR so that other Canadian institutions can benefit from our experience.

2. To identify and share best practices and lessons learned with each other for the implementation of institution repositories.

3. To establish a “proof of concept” for institutional repositories in the Canada.

• The ego factor works!

• Learn to speak the language of the research community

• Don’t rely on the researcher for self-archiving? (be prepared to find and deposit items, assign metadata and check copyright agreements)

• Content recruitment costs money.

• The most effective strategy is to mandate archiving, but even with that, IR staff must expect to continue to actively recruit and assist in depositing.

• Short-term strategies work in the short term only. Sustainable solutions require long-term commitments.
