Jaakko Kuusisto CONDUCTOR/CHEF D’ORCHESTRE

Conductor, composer and violinist Jaakko

Kuusisto enjoys an extensive career that

was launched by a series of successes

in international violin competitions in

the 1990s. Having recorded concertos

by some of the most prominent Finnish

contemporary composers, such as

Rautavaara, Aho, Sallinen and Pulkkis, he

is one of the most frequently recorded

Finnish instrumentalists.

Highlights of Kuusisto’s 2015-16

season include his debut performances

with the Kraków Sinfonietta and NAC

Orchestra, as well as conducting the world

premiere of Indigo at the Finnish National

Opera. Indigo is an opera by heavy metal

cello group Apocalyptica’s Eicca Toppinen

and Perttu Kivilaakso, arranged and

orchestrated by Kuusisto.

Jaakko Kuusisto is the artistic director

of the Oulu Music Festival and he also

enjoys a longstanding relationship with

the Lahti Symphony Orchestra: having

served as concertmaster from 1999-

2012, he now frequently appears as guest

conductor. Kuusisto’s recordings with

the Lahti Symphony Orchestra include

music by Armas Järnefelt, Kalevi Aho, his

father Ilkka Kuusisto, and his own Violin

Concerto with Elina Vähälä as soloist. He

has collaborated with Rajaton on pops

projects featuring the music of ABBA,

Queen and The Beatles in arrangements

mostly written by Kuusisto himself.

Le chef d’orchestre, compositeur et

violoniste Jaakko Kuusisto poursuit une

belle carrière amorcée par une série

de succès récoltés dans des concours

internationaux de violon dans les années

1990. Il est l’un des instrumentistes

finlandais qui gravent le plus d’albums,

ayant à son actif des enregistrements de

concertos de certains de ses compatriotes

compositeurs contemporains les plus en

vue.

À son calendrier comme chef pour

la saison 2015-2016 figurent des débuts

avec le Kraków Sinfonietta et l’Orchestre

du CNA, ainsi que la création mondiale par

l’Opéra national de Finlande d’un opéra

qu’il a transcrit pour orchestre, Indigo de

Perttu Kivilaakso et Eicca Toppinen, deux

membres du groupe de violoncellistes

heavy metal Apocalyptica.

Jaakko Kuusisto est le directeur

artistique du Festival de musique d’Oulu.

Il entretient par ailleurs une relation de

longue date avec l’Orchestre symphonique

de Lahti dont il a été le violon solo de

1999 à 2012 et qu’il dirige aujourd’hui

régulièrement comme chef invité. Avec

cet ensemble, il a enregistré des œuvres

d’Armas Järnefelt, de Kalevi Aho, d’Ilkka

Kuusisto (son père), ainsi que son propre

Concerto pour violon avec Elina Vähälä

comme soliste. Il a collaboré avec Rajaton

à des projets de concerts Pops mettant à

l’honneur la musique d’ABBA, de Queen et

des Beatles dans des arrangements dont la

plupart portent sa signature.

The Finnish word Rajaton translates as

“boundless” — a word that so accurately

describes the way this six-voice a cappella

ensemble approaches music. Performing

at concert halls, churches, and jazz and

choral festivals, this distinct group of

musicians exposes their audiences to the

kind of diversity of repertoire, singing style

and stage presentation that has made

them a phenomenon on the world stage. In

their native Finland, Rajaton is a bona fide

pop phenomenon, successfully bridging

the gap that often exists between classical

and mainstream convention.

In 2016, Rajaton celebrates 19 years of

music-making with one double platinum,

three platinum and eight gold records in

Finland under their belt.

The group has grown immeasurably

through collaborations with other a

cappella artists, including The King’s

Singers and The Real Group, as well

as productions with film directors and

choreographers. But it is perhaps their deep

passion for choral art, their generosity of

spirit and their sheer enjoyment of singing

that has won the hearts and acclaim

of audiences and critics everywhere.

Their energy – infectious; their ability to

entertain and inspire – Rajaton!

The voice is boundless.

Rajaton est un mot finnois qui signifie

« sans limites » — un terme qui traduit

avec justesse la façon dont cet ensemble a

cappella de six voix aborde la musique. Se

produisant dans des salles de concert,

des églises, ainsi que des festivals de jazz

et de chant choral, ce groupe sélect fait

mouche à tout coup avec un répertoire

extraordinairement varié, un style de chant

unique et une présence sur scène qui ont

fait de l’ensemble une véritable sensation

sur la scène mondiale. Dans sa Finlande

natale, Rajaton est un authentique

phénomène pop, comblant avec succès le

fossé qui sépare la musique classique des

productions grand public.

En 2016, Rajaton célèbre ses 19 ans

d’existence. Son histoire est ponctuée

d’un disque certifié double-platine, de

trois albums platine et de huit disques d’or

récoltés en Finlande.

Le groupe a gagné infiniment en

popularité au fil de collaborations avec

d’autres ensembles a cappella dont les

King’s Singers et The Real Group, et à la

faveur de productions avec des cinéastes

et chorégraphes. Mais c’est peut-être

avant tout sa passion profonde pour le

chant choral, sa générosité d’esprit et le

Manon St-Jules HOST/ANIMATRICE

Since graduating from the National

Theatre School of Canada, Manon St-Jules

has been leading a bilingual career,

performing in classical and contemporary

plays for big and small companies

in Toronto (Canadian Stage, Festival

of Classics, Theatre Direct, Pleiades

Theatre), in Montreal (Théâtre Denise

Pelletier, Centaur Theatre, Compagnie

à Numéro) and in Sudbury (Sudbury

Theatre Centre, le Théâtre du Nouvel-

Ontario). In Ottawa, she has performed

for the NAC, the Great Canadian Theatre

Company, Arts Court Theatre and

Théâtre la Catapulte, and she regularly

hosts concerts with the NAC Orchestra.

Her work on-camera includes dramatic

as well as comedic parts in film,

television and commercials, as well as

various multimedia projects. Selected

credits include: Il était une fois dans le

trouble (Vrak), Vies parallèles (CanalD),

Inheriting Trouble (Discovery), 20h17 rue

Darling (feature), Les deux pieds dans

la marge (SRC), Les Bougons (SRC),

Depuis qu’elle a décroché son diplôme de

l’École nationale de théâtre du Canada,

Manon St-Jules poursuit une carrière en

théâtre classique et contemporain, tant en

anglais qu’en français. Elle collabore avec

des petites et grandes compagnies, aussi

Tobi Hunt McCoySEASON STAGE MANAGER/RÉGISSEUSE DE LA SAISON

Tobi Hunt McCoy is enjoying another year

as Season Stage Manager with the National

Arts Centre Orchestra. In past seasons,

Ms. McCoy stage managed the Lord of

the Rings Symphony, Mendelssohn’s

A Midsummer Night’s Dream with

Christopher Plummer in 2001 and

Colm Feore in 2014, and much of the

Orchestra’s educational and Pops pro-

gramming. Last season she co-produced

the Pops show On the Air with Jack Everly

for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, a

show they also produced in 2007 for the

NAC Orchestra.

Additional professional duties have

included bracing the backstage doors

against the almighty power of Richard

Strauss, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the

air conditioning system at Montreal’s La

Maison Symphonique, guest conducting

the NAC Orchestra in rehearsal for the

Black & White Opera Soiree, providing air-

guitar support during the Led Zeppelin

tribute concert, shepherding numerous

choruses to and from the rehearsal hall,

utilising her creative Vancouver French with

the combined choral and orchestral forces

in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, and duck

wrangling for the Mysterioso Pops concert.

She is excited to be back teaching

English and Drama at Lisgar Collegiate.

Tobi Hunt McCoy poursuit sa collaboration

saisonnière avec l’Orchestre du CNA à titre

de régisseuse. Au fil des ans, elle a été à

la régie pour la Symphonie « Le Seigneur

des anneaux », Le Songe d’une nuit d’été de

Mendelssohn avec Christopher Plummer

en 2001 et Colm Feore en 2014, et bon

nombre des programmes Pops et concerts

jeunesse et famille de l’Orchestre. La

saison dernière, elle a assuré avec

Jack Everly la coproduction du programme

La belle époque de la radio pour

l’Orchestre symphonique d’Edmonton,

concert qu’ils avaient produit ensemble en

2007 pour l’Orchestre du CNA.

Comme régisseuse, Mme Hunt McCoy a

fait un peu de tout : bloqué les portes de

l’arrière-scène de la Maison symphonique

de Montréal pour faire échec au pouvoir

tout-puissant de Richard Strauss, de

Yannick Nézet-Séguin et du système de

climatisation; dirigé l’Orchestre du CNA

durant une répétition de la Soirée d’opéra

Noir et Blanc; joué de la guitare imaginaire

dans un concert hommage à Led Zeppelin;

accompagné de nombreux chœurs dans

leurs allées et venues à l’arrière-scène;

exercé avec créativité son français de

Vancouvéroise avec l’ensemble combiné

chœur et orchestre dans la Huitième

symphonie de Mahler; et fait la guerre à

un canard dans le cadre du concert Pops

Mysterioso.

Cette année encore, elle prend plaisir

à enseigner l’anglais et l’art dramatique au

Lisgar Collegiate Institute. © F
