Summary of PresentationsCOPENHAGEN Climate Change Summit and its Implications
Challenges and Opportunities of the Copenhagen
Climate Conference (Keynote)
Dr Michael NobelFounder, the Nobel Charitable Trust and guest professor at the
Frontier Research Centre, Tokyo Institute of Technology
National University of Japan (SWEDEN)
Dr. Nobel in his address looked far beyond the abject failures of theCopenhagen meeting, to the hope that it’s not yet too late to save
our planet. Developed and developing countries need to lay aside their attitudes and work together to improve life, both environmentally and financially, he believes. He remains hopeful that scientists, lawmakers,
manufacturers, the educational system and the public can make the vast and joint efforts necessary.
Beyond Copenhagen - the shift to green energy
offers great economic advantages
Dr. Hanns SchumacherAmbassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Thailand
Dr. Schumacher looked beyond Copenhagen to the economic advantages of a shift to green energy. Each nation has to make a choice – and that’s a
political decision to create a new order. The example he gave was the commitment of EU member states to reduce carbon emission levels by 30% from 1990 levels by 2010 provided tat other developed countries
commit to comparable emission reductions.
The Bayer Climate Program -
Concept and Practice
Mr. Dominikus von PescatoreSenior Bayer Representative for Country Group North ASEAN
and Managing Director of Bayer Thai Co., Ltd.
Mr. Dominikus spoke about how Bayer Thai has contributed to counteract climate change: The Bayer Climate Program.
Mr Pescatore mentioned that since it has been predicted that the next 10 years will exceed the warmest years on record it is our duty to act. Therefore Bayer has lowered CO2 emissions in
their own production plants, developed new solutions for climate change and Bayer has invested EUR 1 Billion in climate
relevant R&D. Between 1990 and 2007 Bayer reduced their own emissions by over 37 percent, however his future aim is to reduce specific CO2 emissions per ton of sales products
worldwide by 25 percent.
Thai-German Cooperation on
Climate Change
Mr. David OberhuberCountry Director Thailand, German
Technical Cooperation (GTZ) (THAILAND)
Mr. David Oberhuber, the Country Director of Thailand GTZ, spoke about his company’s policies and private commitments
to reduce climate change. He pointed out that policy implementation is still a major challenge. He feels that
Thailand‘s industry is slowly pushing towards climate-friendlyproduction by its export-oriented businesses, thus gaining international recognized standards and additional business
opportunities ,which is a major competitive advantage for the country.

Summary of PresentationsENERGY and Climate Change
Energy and Emerson’s Impact on the
Carbon Footprint
Mr. Tony NovakCountry General Manager; Emerson (Thailand) Ltd.
Mr. Tony, the General Manager of Emerson Thailand, talks about how his company has helped to use energy efficiently and how as a
company they’ve cut down on gas emissions levels. He states that the technologies we develop brings good things to people’s lives, but unfortunately they create a carbon footprint,
therefore Emerson Thailand is trying to reduce this carbon footprint by analyzing the input to the production of our technologies which are logistics, materials and energy. Mr. Novak summarizes by saying that if we want the wonders of technology we also have to strive to
reduce these inputs which directly leads to a reduction in tons of CO2 emissions.
Smart and Responsible Energy Management
Mr.Niraj SharanChairman, Aura Inc & Aura Energy - US, Italy & India
Mr. Niraj Sharan, the Chairman of Aura Inc and Aura Energy spoke authoritatively about the ‘Smart Management’ of energy generation and distribution, from the controlled neutron analyzer that’s efficient, with
low emissions and a longer boiler life to the future of ‘Smart’ grids. He is enthusiastic about the new challenges of changing demands,
renewable generation, security and the opportunities that they give rise to. He showed attendees the ‘smart’ home, where energy use can be controlled and the impact of new technology on communications
and appliances.
Hybrid Fuel Cell Energy-Delivering green
energy and technology to Asia.
Dr. Chris D'CoutoPresident & Chief Executive Officer Neah Power Systems, Seattle, USA
Dr. Chris CEO of Neah Power Systems feels that climate change is a tragedy, he says the problem is every individual knows what they
need to do solve the problem as a society but the individual incentives are not there for them to execute on that motivation.
Dr. Chris states that a company like Neah Power Systems can offer a winning solution to climate change by providing the most
competitive renewable energy technology based on superior fuel cell solutions.
Dr. Art-ong Jumsai na Ayudhya’s address gave plenty of food for thought. Such challenges as starvation, for example, if people consumed fifty percent less meat that they usually eat would
release enough food to feed the entire developing world. Another: reducing meat production by just ten percent would release
enough grain to feed 60 million people. Lastly: eight percent more water is required to grow animals than to grow vegetables or grain.

Financing the Fight against Climate Change
Government Financing - The Fight against
Climate Change
Mr. Sumit PokhrelGMS-EOC climate change specialist
ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK .(THAILAND)
Mr. Sumit Pokhrel spoke about financing the fight against climate change. He doesn’t see inaction as an option, but sees the responsibility as being a shared one with huge challenges. Finance options include: Mobilizing
environment grants and climate change funds, public sector investments and stimulus packages, maximizing the use of market-based mechanisms and catalyzing private sector investments (Public-private partnerships). He showed participants what a sustainable transport path would look and how land use could be transformed leading to greater prosperity.
Private Sector Financing-
The Fight against Climate Change
Mr. Shayne HeffernanCo - Founder , Ebeling-Heffernan , (BAHAMAS)
Mr. Shayne Heffernan, the Co-Founder of Ebeling Heffernan, spoke with feeling about the private sector funding the fight
against climate change. He says his prime interest was in renewable energy.
He mentioned that he’s working on a fuel cell mixed with solar remote for stand -alone power stations and the integration of
the hybrid fuel cell into the motor vehicle.Additionally, he added that he’s working on super conductors to cut the loss rate of energy, since 80% of the energy is lost
from the time it’s produced to the time it is delivered.

Dear Roy,
Many thanks for your excellent hospitality during the SOP1 conference. Much enjoyed my experience there and our collabo-ration. You did an outstanding job in my and others opinion.
Believe you have a great concept going and would like to continue cooperation for these SOP conferences. Think you should also consider Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, their govern-ments might be very interested.
BestMichael
Mr. Dominikus von Pescatore
Dear Roy,
Thanks for your recognition and I thank you for your great network-ing, it was a pleasure to participate. Thanks also for the personal attention you and your team have given to me, and your team did a good job in organizing the event!
In general, I felt that the climate topic is of great interest, the momen-tum can grow further and you can be an important catalyst. A different audience should be targeted too, especially the ones who are not so convinced yet about the urgency of the topic. More opportunity for discussions should be given. Sensibilizing decision makers from the political area will be crucial. Therefore, I wish you good luck for March 25th. I was impressed by the school example and I think it was excellent that you brought participants with concrete proposals.
Thanks once more and
Best Regards,Dominikus von Pescatore

With the intense interest on the “Green Technologies” of the near future and our world’s obsession with carbon based fuels and following on the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference, “AABC”(Asean Affairs Business Council) has launched a series of conferences to debate Climate Change and what Asean can do to prevent and mitigate this vital challenge of our times.
“Save Our Planet 1” on March 12, 2010 in Bang-kok was the first in a series of conferences being organized by ABBC. The conference will be held in different Asean capitals (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh) in 2010 culminating in a mega conference at the end of the year. The conference seeks to enlighten leaders in business and governments of South-east Asia to the outcome of the Copenhagen Climate Conference, create awareness of our growing carbon footprint, and find sustainable

solutions for individuals, businesses, civic society and governments to contribute towards saving our planet from catastrophic conse-quences before it is too late.
Today’s theme is. Titled the Eco-Economy-and will present us a vision of how the future Eco-Economy will look like. Our endeavour has been to engage the private sector more than government or Agencies, we need the private sector to join us in this endeavour. So you will hear from them today as well and what they are doing to mitigate climate change.
What we need today is action on the part of us all-individuals, organizations, companies, societies –the time to sit on the fences is over. We have to take action to SAVE OUR PLANET.I will look forward to your continuing support and welcoming you at our next events.
